Usually, I do not recall great (or not so great for that matter) shots for any length of time, but in an occasional moment of "muse", I do recall one particular eight iron. Nothing particularly noteworthy, but was unexpected.  This was probably twenty years ago. At the time, my normal distance with an eight iron was a fairly consistent 135 yards. This time, it was an approach that required me to lay up to avoid going into a nasty hazard. I cherry picked that shot, making a contact that was barely felt, and that thing soared into the air with a 170 yard carry, nearly going into the hazard. It has not occurred since and today  I would surmise my eight iron distance a paltry 120 yards, if that. I find myself pulling out a mid iron  or hybrid even, rather than a wedge on approaches. Father time, has taken his toll.

When I was a lot younger I hit a 7 iron to the green. I caught all of it and it should have hit the green and kept right on going. When it came down and hit an acorn went to the right and into the hole foe an eagle. Another time I was playing and I hit a 5 iron because I really did not know what to hit. I pulled it left and when it came down It hit something and changes course and went into the hole. like I always say anyone can role the ball into the hole but it takes real talent and a lot luck to bank one in.

Seems like our bad strokes/great results tend to be thin shots.  Makes sense since a fat shot typically has -0- chance of getting to the target whereas a thin shot can hit something or roll enough to dissipate the energy.

I subconsciously refuse to remember the bladed ball that rolled +40 yards to be a near hole in one.

Instead I remember my other opposite shot - great shot / bad result. Two years ago I hit one of those "good the minute you hit it" wedge shots.  Ball never left the flag.  Hit the flag stick somewhere between knee and waist high and rebounded 25 yards (measured with my laser) off the green into the crappiest lie one can imagine. It was a great shot just to get a club on the ball to get on the green and two putt for bogey instead of having a good look at birdie (or even an eagle).

Most of these are thinned shots where the extra energy turned the mistake into something good.  I'll go the other route.  #9 Eagle Valley

One of my 2 under par rounds this was the worst shot of the round.  Was playing decent regulation golf and was +1 on the front through 8.  9 was a short par 4 with no trouble really.  Good drive to left center of fairway, probably my easiest approach shot of the day so far at 135 yards to the pin.  I guess the day was going so well I must have been getting overconfident.

I hit the 9i a bit fat and it pulled hard left.....It hit the cart path and ricochet'd back onto the green.  I'd already given up on it and was just about walking in disgust when I heard the CLACK of contact and saw it shoot hard right and away.  Left with a long lag putt, but better than in the tress/bushes where I thought it was going.  (it really should have been left in the margins and short nearly 30-40 yards)

Another stock GIR for a regulation par - no problem.  There was NO pretending that was intentional.

Similar to @rehmwa.  I did it off the tee on the hole below. 3rd hole at Links at Victoria, for those of you who know LA public golf.  Short par 4, 300-310 from the back tees.  It's hard to see below, and I think the trees were bigger than in this pic, but with my distance I can get it pretty close to, or on, the green with a good drive in SoCal weather and hard fairway roll.  And given my driver dispersion and the fact that a leave to either side is worse than it looks in this pic, really I should've always been hitting 2h.  But, who doesn't love to bomb the green!

I hit an awful duck hook.  Left side of the cart path has a concrete curb.  I duck it into the cart path into the bend past the left fairway bunker, ricochet perfectly off the curb, roll it to 15-20 feet.  Didn't make the birdie, but easy GIR par

Today I hit a slice off the tee to a par three. Just a totally screwed up, not paying attention swing.

The sliced ball went way right of the green, a green side bunker, even the fairway. 

The ball hit a big pine tree just right, bounced left, clearing the bunker, onto the green  leaving me 15 footer for a bird. I walked off the green with a par. 

The guy I was with gave me his best "better lucky than good" look, which I gracefully accepted.

Pushed a 7-iron on a 145 yard par three. Solid contact and the right distance, but pushed. It bounced perfectly off a sprinkler head, arched back to the flag stick and left a two-footer that even I couldn't mess up for bird.

2nd hole at home course, downhill lie pitch across a lake, about 100 yds. Dead thin, skipped off water, rolled to about 15 feet, 2 putt par.

Great thread. I have a great one. It was in our club's Ryder Cup competition - the match play portion. I nuked my drive on a par 5 and had 140 to the flag (it's a short par 5, but it was one of my best drives ever on this hole). My opponent makes the green in 2, before me, but he's not super close.

I proceed to thin the shit out of this shot. It was probably microns away from being a cold top. I'm standing there, shaking my head in disbelief at how bad this shot is. But it keeps rolling. And rolling. And rolling. It eventually ends up on the green. And it keeps rolling. Finally, it stops about a foot from the hole. Tap-in eagle. I was cackling at this point. My cart mate only saw the result, not the actual shot. He was amused when I told him it was basically a top. Don't think my opponent was as amused...

I aimed a little too aggressively with escape shots too often this season and more than a few times, barely missed the tree trunk or threaded some branches. When you get past the blocking plant life, result is usually always good, give yourself at least a chance at par.

Today at fossil trace 2nd hole from the back tees. 

Hit 3 wood to 6 inches for a tap in eagle. 

Playing partner said that was the most awesome shit he ever saw on the 2 nd hole.
