Welcome to the "5 Minutes Daily" Practice Challenge for August, 2017! The rules are the same as always:

  • Make a detailed post describing your practice every day during the month. Try to limit the number of very short or "ditto" type posts. Describe what you did for at least five minutes of practice (indoors or out, with or without golf balls, etc.).
  • No back-dating or pre-dating posts or practice sessions.
  • On the last day of the month, if you completed the challenge, post about it in red text so I can notice it and give you the award.

Enjoy and practice hard!

Note: you can miss one day per monthly challenge if you have a good reason and still be eligible for the monthly award.

August 1 - Playing 18 today. Did some shoulder turn stretches this morning in my office. I do that during the many conference calls I have!

My wrist is feeling much better now. I may only use the brace for driver and woods today and see how it feels. Had an MRI on my knee yesterday and we'll see if I need surgery. If so, that will have to wait until the season is over.

I will be on hiatus from TST for several days. Going out of town for a conference and such - golf not included - and upon return will have 72 hours to get ready for next round of Amateur circuit.

Focus, connect and follow through!

8/1: My neck is still up and down (last bits of healing from injury in April), but I'll be doing form practice and some range work this month, with hopefully a round or two sprinkled in.

Today: Back to basics- mirror work on centered hip turn. Plus confirming new grip with lesson advice. 15mins.

The kids and grandchildren have returned home so I'm free to go again this month.  I will say that the month I participated in this, my ball striking improved.   I'm a firm believer in correct practice.

8/1:

I played 18 today with my local foursome.  I started very rough and thought the day was a wash but persevered  and finished strong.  My focus after starting so poorly was to go back to the basics with grip, alignment and setup.   I had an inner self talk and decided it was going to be a good day.  It was.

Irons in the yard today, focusing on in-line impact and weight forward. They need some serious work.

Range, outdoors, with a ball, on grass.  6-iron shots to warm up, then took video with both slow and full-speed (latter for evolvr, both for here).  I then hit practice shots, slow and full speed, with my gap wedge (flight shots), 4-hybrid, and hit a few drives.  Followed routine on all shots, including rehearsal / practice swings.

Looking forward to playing tomorrow and also achieving the August challenge this month!

August 1st

Just spent about 15 to 20 minutes working on my shoulder turn and getting to be 90 degrees to my spine angle.  It was recently pointed out that my shoulder turn is flat, causing me to cut across the ball.

The work consisted of using a long rod across my shoulders and turning and making turns trying to make sure the rod points a foot or two outside of where the ball is.

I also worked on stretching in order to make this turn more natural.

OK... I practiced putting inside for 10 minutes after I got home at 10:15 PM.

Hopefully August won't go ka-blooie while I'm on the road.

I used to practice backswing positions with a coat hanger when that was my focus (now it's clubhead in the backswing which isn't as amenable to this solution) when I couldn't get some with-a-club practice in otherwise.

Maybe the gym at your hotel has a medicine ball and you can do the driver "at home" exercise from LSW for a few minutes?

8/1:  okay, let's try this again.  Went to the range after work and tried to figure out the driver and putter.  Spent over an hour and still a little lost.  Tournament this weekend so trying to find something.  Putter more than driver.

Aug. 2

Practiced shorter hinge-and-hold shots in my back yard. Used TM Tour Preferred 56°/14 SW from my back-up TM bag.

I think I may include a well-used Calla XForged 56°/14 SW as my 14th club for the home course. We're having trouble with rock-hard bunkers in many places, and I don't want to beat up my new 54° MD3 on the pebbles. Best to pick it off the top with a somewhat lofted club.

Worked on hitting solid shots. Lots of partial shots focused on solid contact. Lots of distance wedge shots and pitching.
