AP1 712 = 6 years old. I've recently been counseled to keep them until I can break 80, and then switch to something that has more control. They could end up being pretty old before I retire them.. hopefully not!

I have my Titleist 981s since ~ 2000.  I love them and looked to move to forged irons but cannot find one with just the same offset and forgiveness while being great in working the ball.  I just re-grip them (myself) about once every 1.5 years or so.

Driver: Taylormade M3 (9o) with Mitsubishi Tensei Blue 65 Stiff-flex shaft.  3-wood: Tour Edge Exotics CB2 (15o) with Fujikura Regular-flex

3H: Tour Edge (18o) with R-flex 80g shaft.  4H: 22o  Taylormade Rbz Stage 2 with R-flex shaft.

Irons (5-PW): Titleist 804os with True Temper reg. flex shaft.  Wedges: 50o deg Titleist SM-7 12o bounce F grind, 56o (bent to 54o) Cleveland RTG sand wedge, Cleveland RTX-3 CB 58o wedge 9o bounce.

Putter: TaylorMade Ghost Monte Carlo w/Super Stroke 2.0 grip

I rotate a few sets, one of them being my 1985 Ping Eye2 BeCu irons. Below is a photo. My feeling, though, is that I need a newer more modern set. Plus, I'm a senior who needs regular shafts, graphite preferable. If any of you have trades you'd like to offer, I'm willing to listen. Need forged, love AP2s, Miz MPs

Currently as of 1/26/18:

2 years.

By the end of March: brand new.

I'll definitely hang onto my EXi's though. I do have a set of Tour Edge V-Blades from 2000.

Not a fan of TM irons. They look like billboards on the highway to Vegas. I hear they perform well, though, but I can't get around their look. Thanks.

The GI/SGI ones like the M1, M2, M3, and M4 or are you including the player's irons as well? The RAC TP Smokes were some nice looking irons, my friend.

I agree, bud. I was talking about the Burners he mentioned. Still prefer Mizzy or AP2s.

I actually wasn't a huge fan of a lot the Mizuno's that came out in the 2000-07 era, the MP-18s are sure nice though. I know someone who played MP-29s for years and years until the faces were so worn, he had to get new irons.

Lol. Man I have always liked the look of the burners. To each their own I guess. They do perform well...especially when someone else other than me is swinging them.

My irons are G25s that I purchased used, (in really good condition), I also have a set of Cobra irons which are pretty old. My woods are Cobra S3s, probably 10 years old, they are staying in my bag, iron the heck out of them. I did however buy a new driver, a Cobra Max which I played for the first time yesterday, really nice. It is weird I like Ping irons but Cobra woods and driver, good figure. Except for the driver my clubs are probably 8 to 10 years old and I'm not changing them. I once posted a question on here, is new technology worth it. From the replies I don't think it is worth it, most hit five to ten year old clubs. Or they wait a year or two before buying new.

I think my MX 23's came out in 2005-2006ish?  So I'd say about 12 years old.  They're goodies though.

I like the MX 23s. Nice heavy sole and good look. I sold my set of MP-53s a few weeks ago and regretted it so much I bought another set tonight. They speak to me, where other sets just sit there. What can I say. I'm a golf nut.

  • 4 weeks later...

I'm still playing Tommy Armour 845 Silver Scot irons from the early 1990s. Back in their heyday (late 80s, early 90s), these were used by Davis Love III and Fred Couples. Later models (late 90s) were used by Corey Pavin, Craig Stadler, and Paul Goydos. I've tried several other irons but keep coming back to these like they're old friends. About 15 years ago Tommy Armour was bought out by Sports Authority and started making crappy game-improvement irons for the retail market that were so ugly they were hard to look at.

What's in the bag:
Driver: TaylorMade Rocketballz (non-adjustable), 10.5 degrees, stock graphite shaft R flex
Hybrids: Kasco, 17 and 25 degrees, stock graphite shafts
Irons: Golfsmith Tour Cavity Forged, 4-PW, graphite shafts R, 2 degrees upright
Wedges: TaylorMade Black Oxide, 52, 56, and 60 degrees, graphite shafts
Putter: Rife Barbados w/SuperStroke grip
Ball: Bridgestone RXS

I bought Ping G30s in August of 2014. They replaced my G15s, which replaced my Eye2s which I bought in 1986. I bought the 30s with graphite shafts to help with some arthritis in my thumbs. I disliked the graphite so much, I sent them back to Ping, and had them replace the graphite with steel. Had I known that, I'd still be playing the 15s.

    • At a basic level, you can take those strokes gained numbers and if you know what the baseline strokes to hole out is from each distance, you can figure out how many strokes on average you will take to hole out from any given spot on the golf course. Then you can take that shot zone thing from shotscope and put it down there and see what the average is for each club and each target you choose. That's not exactly trivial to do though even with a computer, so the strategy guides (like LSW) use rules of thumb to make those decisions easier for you to make on the fly. Most of the time you'll come up with the optimal strategy and on the odd occasion when you don't, the strategy you come up with will be pretty darn close to optimal. If you're anything like me, then you'll probably wind up being a little too conservative with both club choice and target. Fear of penalty strokes can make you play suboptimally. Basically it's a bad idea to base your strategy on a shot that might pop up less than 1 in 20 times. If you happen to hit that shot, then today just isn't your day, but the 19 times you don't, you'll be in that much better of a spot.
    • That sounds like a small sample size issue. What if the PGA tour event he was trying to get into just happened to fit his game perfectly? Also, he could just be playing hot right now. I’ll put this in the wait-and-see category.
    • I've used a construction laser for years. Far less expensive than the PuttAim laser.
    • True, but as 15 year olds go, he has a much better chance of getting there than any of the rest of them. Kid can flat out play. He almost Monday'd into a PGA tour event a few weeks ago too. Missed in a playoff.
    • I'd bet against him having much success as a pro, because of, you know… the odds. You don't want to be the best 15-year-old in the game. You want to be the best 25-year-old in the game.
