That resort and those courses look awesome. I think I'll start planting the seeds in my wife's mind sooner rather than later.

The venue will be good, for certain, and it was in 2015 as well.  However, the venue isn't nearly as important as the guys who you'd be playing with and against (not to mention the two captains).  If you read the stuff from the 2015 event, I hope that what comes through is the fun every one of us had with the other guys.  That's the coolest part of the Newport Cup.

The cost may be up to $750 this year.

Quite honestly, I don't think that should matter too much: the difference between $500 and $750 is minimal. We'll do ALL we can to keep the cost as low as possible, but… yeah… Premium lodging, two great courses that were both resurfaced and remodeled… etc. is running into some costs, even with our considerable negotiating power.

I don't expect that this will exclude anyone, but I wanted to note it here and as early as possible.

We were kind enough to choose a neutral site last time out. ;)  I think NC 2019 will have to be at Bernardo Heights CC.  Weekly west coast team practice rounds starting November 2017.

I've played there.

Easy peasy.

Watch out for the grain though. ;-)

It all grows towards the water but we don't have any water in in San Diego so everything breaks towards Rae's Creek.

But what about the Vegas Strip?

Yeah, the cost is the least of things that would stop me from being able to go, rofl. Dropping 6 points off my index is the main obstacle for me.

Since the Newport Cup is divided roughly along the Mississippi, shouldn't we be accounting for that?

And what about the pull of the Payne Stewart statue?

Maybe what needs to happen is put the Newport Cup right in Missouri, Iowa, or other border state, and then have captains arm wrestle over players signed up who are near the dividing line and competition course?

No drama there. @mvmac would win.

I'd kick his ass in a foot race though.

Great idea!  Since I live in Missouri.  :-).  Actually the thought of going somewhere for the trip is probably more appealing.

sounds like you two should have some sort of challenge to kick off the cup.

Hmmm, something you both are equally inept in would be the best, maybe 1v1 water polo?

Mike can't swim. He's Canadian. He's used to all the water being frozen.

I, conversely, grew up on Lake Erie. Literally. Right ON it. Oh, and I can hover too.

    • Back in my Army days a "gooch" was a particular part of the anatomy. Example, say Okeechobee is the b-hole of Florida, then Belle Glade would be the gooch. Seems he wears his name well.
    • I can't say that I remember a lot of individual putts, but I do have one specific memory.  The first time I played the Old Course, I had hit a pretty good drive on the 6th hole.  I had about 60 yards left, and due to the swale in front of the green, there was no chance of flying a wedge on or near the green and having it stop on the green.  My caddie recommended either a running 7-iron chip or a putt, and I took the putter and a pretty hard swing.  The ball rolled over humps and through hollows, disappeared into the swale in front of the green, and re-appeared heading right at the hole.  I ended up maybe 12 feet away.  The caddie turned and held out his hand to shake mine, and said "Now THAT was a golf shot!"
    • For the first time since 2021, I made a 3 on the 12th at Stoneleigh.    395 yards, something like 80 feet uphill, I hit a solid drive and a 7-wood to inside a foot.  Even I couldn't miss that one.  I feel like I haven't played a lot of golf this year, but I'm making decent progress.
    • Wordle 1,050 5/6 ⬜🟨🟨⬜🟩 🟨🟩⬜⬜🟩 ⬜🟩⬜🟨🟩 ⬜🟩🟩🟨🟩 🟩🟩🟩🟩🟩 I felt all were good shots, but bogey it is.  Maybe this hole was a par 5?
