Average first round score is 69 for the last 12 Masters champions and they averaged 4.6 on the leaderboard after Day 1. Going to be very difficult to make a huge comeback for the likes of Rose, Woods, D-Johnson, Watson, Thomas, Noren, Day, Scott, and other big names that shot Even or worse today. There are a ton of quality players ahead of them on the board.

Yup.

They're almost already out of it.

Tiger shot 74 in the first round in 2005. That's just noise. It's not a big comeback. It takes one good round to get back in it. Not three and shoot 64 on Sunday. I can name at least a few who have been over par on Thursday and won. Tiger (2005), Stadler (1982), Jack (1986) there are more 73 or worse on Thursday is not an automatic you're not winning. Remember, Tiger, J-Rose, and company are only 7 out of the lead. Spieth nor anyone WILL NOT post 134 for 36 holes around when Tiger makes the turn. I GUARANTEE IT

It's round one. Let's see where everyone is tomorrow. I bet Spieth can get it to 10.

It would only take a 65 or better to jump up the board.

The last 12 have been under par and in the top 10 last year. T29 is well out of the top 10.

Note that the last 12 starts in… 2006. ;-) Tiger was the last to not meet those data points and win. And it took some weird weather and some great play very early Sunday morning.

Well it's not just Tiger. He already passed Phil's record in this regard. Amazing stuff from a guy who hasn't even turned 25 years old yet. Arnold and Jack once said Tiger should win 10+ green jackets. It sure looks like Spieth is the Chosen One in this regard. He owns that golf course!

Tiger doesn't hit driver well enough. Its hardto believe it has been 13 years since he won this tournament.

Tell that to his tee shots on 2, 3, 17, and 18.

He hit 3W on 1, 5, and 13…

I think I read somewhere that the last 12 masters champions were in the top 10 after day 1. I think Spieth would have the best bet (at this course) than any of the other guys in the top 10 currently. I think Rory is more talented but is more inconsistent.

Well, Spieth is also leading and it's not like he's someone who came out of nowhere so I'd be shocked in Vegas didn't agree with you based on those factors and that's he's a past winner.

Plus, Spieth is probably the best player in the world right now playing this course. His finishes at the Masters: T2, 1, T2, T11. I don't think he'll shoot 66 tomorrow, but it wouldn't be the most surprising thing if he did. Him shooting -4 would make it close to impossible to anyone not under par to come back. He's just so good at this course.

I agree. I was thinking -4 or better makes it his tournament to lose on the weekend for sure.

Actually I can think of numerous years where his ballstriking was 100% good enough to win this event. He's had a shitload of Top 5's since his last victory. The putter let him down numerous times, just as it does for everyone else. The "what if I made a few more putts" game can be played by everyone at every tournament.

In my opinion, Tiger's iron game let him down big time today. Great tee shots at #2 and #8 were completely thrown down the drain with horrible iron shots that prevented him from making birdie on those reachable par 5's. Then there's the water ball iron shot at #12 as well.

Which he did in 2016. Golf is hard.

134 WILL NOT HAPPEN... Is Jordan Spieth a damn good player? Absolutely. Will he shoot 68 or better tomorrow? I doubt it. Will he shoot a solid round and still probably lead? I think so. But I don't see this becoming a race that only the top-10 can win. Anyone of the guys between -1 and +2 can still get back in it, with a good Friday. I think if a couple guys at +1 become -2 or -3 after Friday, then the lead is only -7 after 2 rounds... Look out... Remember the weather looks dicey Saturday. A couple solid rounds from the middle of the pack... Your right there with 18 holes to play.

You forgot 8.... He just needs a solid day with driving in general. And birdie at least 3 par-5s. An eagle wouldn't hurt.

Sure that’s possible. And for Tigers sake I hope your right. But that’s not what has happened recently. Could just be recency bias on my part, but I think anyone over Par right now is WAY behind the eight ball. Tomorrow will be quite interesting.

Being confident is pulling it out all the time. Notahwas laughing and shaking his head after the tee shot on 1 and said he has pounded driver there all week. Not sure why he second guessed it. I should reword it and say with driver/3 wood it really hinders him in this tournament. It has become an important off the tee course to be long and in the fairway. He really struggles off the tee at times but does hit some amazing recovery shots.

Ok. I'll buy the recency... But -10 or better will not lead after tomorrow. Spieth or one of the 4-unders will lead at around -8... This is not going end up being Spieth by 13 or 14... not going to happen... But you're talking like 73 is like 83 or 93.... It's 1-over par and 1 over par is not way over par... You're making it sound like the guys who grinded out 71, 72, 73s are already not going to contend for the Green Jacket on Sunday... Tiger's 73... was literally about the worst he could have shot.

@iacas, will probably say no Tiger should have shot about 77 today... I'd say... no... 73 was the worst he could have shot today... You guys watch tomorrow... He might not shoot that really super-low 63 or 64 tomorrow... but in the 60s he still has a chance... Tiger just needs to finish the final three rounds in 205 or better... Come on this is Tiger we are talking about... he's got this.

Is this the Masters Discussion thread or the All Things Tiger thread? Jeez, it's nothing but Tiger can, didn't, has to, or still could, blah blah blah... He's in what, 29th place? Yet he's all you guys talk about. I hate to break it to you, but it's 2018, not 2008. So many guys have an A game as good or better then Tiger does now, and he's trailing a boat load of them.

http://newyork.cbslocal.com/2018/04/03/masters-2018-tiger-woods-news-odds-updates/

CBS is drooling about Tiger. But Tiger is 29th and +1 on Thursday. I don't mind Woods, but the media falls all over itself and makes him their #1 priority which isn't fair to other players. I guess it's unavoidable since the media and sports love any player who is not the status quo, aka white male and boring.

    • Day 211 (29 Nov 24) - Friday men’s round albeit a solo foursome (temps in the 40’s, day after Thanksgiving and the average age closer to 75 - I’m a youngster at 65).  Interesting day of semi-solid play (8 of 18 GIR). Hit all four par threes in one (a first) - parred each; still had a couple 3 putt bogies; and blew up on 3 of the par 5’s (go figure)). The blow ups were some serious tree rattlers - amplifying how I got stupid and greedy instead of smart and content to just get back in the short stuff.
