Did they score it correctly? Putting for bogey (5), it runs past.  Putts the ball in motion (6), and it goes past, then marks the ball, putts (7) and misses, then putts into hole (8), plus 2 stroke penalty (10).  They're listing it as a 9.

You don't see that very often. Unfortunate thing to have happen on his birthday.

He did it of his own volition. What was he thinking?!

They just fixed it. They had scored him wrong.

People are wondering if he will get further penalized for it. Him disrespecting the golf/tournament. Also the put in the following hole was done on purpose as well as he laughed afterwards.

Well his drive hit the fairway, approach was long, wedge rolled off the front. His putt went like it was rolling off the front, again.

At this point we're explaining something foolish - he taps the moving ball. However, if he lets the ball keep rolling off the front, he would have a second 30 yard-ish wedge back onto the green, and then another couple of putts to get in the hole.

So the two-stroke penalty equals the likeliest outcome of a wedge back and two putts. At worst he added one stroke to his score of 81, not any matter for someone who at the moment is 19 strokes back of the leader with one round left.

No.

The rules can’t make assumptions about what you would do from there.

Also, he could have played under stroke and distance and replayed the putt.

True. And Phil would place his reputation above all else.

The idea that this was a calculated or even "smart" move is absurd. Phil will be very embarrassed about it. From now on, every time there's an issue with very fast greens at a major they'll be replaying this. A bit sad.

10 minutes later.....

Yet..........now he is saying it WAS calculated. Bad look.

Phil could've gotten disqualified had they decided that he stopped the ball on purpose. Instead he got a penalty for hitting the ball while still moving.

Yeah. I disagree with that.

I haven't seen any embarrassment on his part. He was smirking/laughing after leaving that hole. I am wondering if he will address the media. He made a fool of himself and I agree the video will played for years to come.

Curtis Strange was suppose to get an interview with him but I haven't heard anything since...

I don't disagree with the rule at all, just saying the penalty isn't consequential, as far as his score in this round or finish in this tournament. He definitely gets some type of a hit to his rep, but to me this will be replayed excessively given the zero impact on the finish. No reason for people to diva this out.

Starting today at +6 he had a chance to win, if he had played as well as Finau or Berger he would be in the top 10. Poor strategy and mental breakdown over the course of the round, but in the moment not really a difference maker to his result.

Not to be *that* guy, but I can't see Tiger ever doing something like that.

    • Probably since the golfer has to swing the club back and up. The hands have to move back and up. You can feel them go back and up just by turning the shoulders and bending the right arm, because it brings your hands towards your right shoulder.  The difference is if you maintain width or not. Less width means a shorter feeling swing path so the more you need to lift the arms. Being as someone who gets the right arm bend at 110+ degrees, it's 100% a timing issue. I am use to like a 1.5+ second backswing. It probably should be like 1 second at most. Half a second or more will feel like an eternity. I have had swings where I keep my right arm straighter and I am still trying to time the downswing based on the old tempo.  Ideally, for me, it is probably going to be a much quicker and shorter (in duration) backswing, while keeping the right elbow straighter. Which also means more hinging to get swing length without over swinging.

    • I'm currently recuperating from surgery, so no golf, but have been thinking about this quite a bit. This and the don't overbend the right arm thing. It's hard for me to even pose the position, so I'm not 100% sure, but I feel like it's impossible to have the right humerus along the shirt seam and not overbend your right arm, unless your hands are down near your hips. If the left arm is up at or above the shoulder plane and your right arm is bent less than 90 degrees, then your right humerus has to raise or your hands will get pulled apart. Your left hand can't reach your right hand unless either the right upper arm is up or the right arm is overbent. Is that right? If it is, then focusing on not overbending the right arm would force you to raise the humerus. And actually thinking further on it, if you do overbend your right arm, then you're basically forcing your upper arm down or forcing your left arm to bend. Since (for me at least) bending the left arm too much is not something I think I need to worry about, it means that the bend in the trail arm is really the driving force behind what happens to the right humerus.
    • I managed to knock off a 3, a 13, and a 15 a couple of weeks ago. The 3 was a 185 yard par 3 with a 6 iron to 12 feet. 13 was a 350 yard par 4, which was a 2 iron and a 9 iron to about a foot. 15 was a 560 yard par 5 with a driver in a bunker, 4 iron into the semi, gap wedge to 8 feet and a putt.
