I recently tested out Mizuno MP 18s with the thinking that I am going to have a mixed bag of MBs and CBs. The fitter was fairly insistent that I go with the "SC" clubs 6-9 instead of the MBs. At the beginning of the fitting I was not hitting shots that great but towards the end, my shots were on and I was really liking the MBs. I have played MP33s in the past and realize the need to hit the sweet spot and didn't doubt that I could handle the 7-PW set up but he was fairly persistent in me not ordering the MB. I play 714 AP2s now fairly decent and although they are a few years old, I am not sure it is a step up but a lateral step to go to the MP 18 SC, so I am not sure it is worth to change.

I don't know what the question is except I am wondering if I am crazy and should just play well with my current irons, abandoning the muscle back idea.... Anyone make this change and glad/mad that they did?

I switched to MP 4s this year and I love them. Do I come up shorter when I miss than I would with my CF16s? Yes. Do I care? No, not really. It might be worth a half of a stroke per round. When I do hit a great shot, I know I did it - which is a great feeling.

It ultimately depends on you. If you like the MBs and you're ok with your misses being slightly worse, go for it. If you want to score your best and need the extra forgiveness, get the CBs. Life is short, so play what you want.

I used to (and I had cut-muscles for all my irons for about three years, but not years I should have).  I even debated mixing the G400s (current irons) with the I-series irons at the lower end, but I ultimately decided I need the benefit of forgiveness for the lower irons.  And I can still hit things like half shots and chips with the G400s.

Of course, OP, you're a better player than I am, so it may not be as crazy as it was when I got the MP-57s when I was a 20 or so handicap.

I have a combo set. Blades 8-PW, cavity backs 5-7, and an undercut cavity back in the 3-4. I like it. If I were to buy a new set I'd probably do something like that.

My 3 Iron would be a iron called a fli hi, 4-6 sc or the mic and 7 to wedge mbs...  $1300 price tag is the hard to swallow part. I better sell some stuff to get a little cushion.

So I just did a review of the MP-18's and my setup is exactly how you were describing...MB's for 7-PW and SC for 4-6.  I've been pretty happy with that setup so far.  Previously, I had gone with entire setups with the same style and not had too much problems.  I do feel that the SC's give me a little more forgiveness that I was looking for.  Anything inside the 6 iron I wanted a little better feedback and traditional feeling.

I don't know that you could really go wrong either way.  I just wanted to try this type of setup once since more and more guys seem to be incorporating a progressive set in their bags.

I read your article a few weeks back but forgot about your set up, I read it again now. It seems like a pretty good mix to play with.

The only problem with my fitting is that the guy fitting me loved his own set up so much that he gave me the same one he has.

I play Cavity Backs throughout all my Irons. My 3 and 4 are hybrids however.

I used a blended set of irons for a while. 8i-PW where MB's i believe. I liked that set alot, especially to play bump and runs with. But I switched to a set of all CB 10 or so years ago and haven't really missed them that much.

That's a bit odd. I hope the numbers back him up, at least?

If I fit everyone into my specs, I wouldn't help many people at all 😆

I have Mizuno MP-5 (cut-muscle back) in my 9 & PW.     Mp-25s in 6i-8i.

If I could go back and re-do it, I would have the MP-5 in the 8i for sure, and possibly the 7i.    but, I have a better, more powerful swing today than I did when I bought them, too.

Not to say I have any qualms with the MP-25s, but the muscle backs certainly have a different feel and ball flight when you hit them on the nuts.

    • Day 206 3-11 Focused on wider backswing and reconnecting arm in downswing. Wasn't really happy with how swing was looking today. Wider backswing is very different for me. Went back to do a some longer pauses at the top. Hit a few foam balls.
    • This is an awesome breakdown. most of the bigger tournaments usually have one wave with the advantage, Thank you for the breakdown. If it is soft then it will be a lower final score
    • Over the past 15 years, the winning score has ranged from -10 to -20. Mostly around -13.  Here is Thursday and Friday weather. Saturday and Sunday weather. I think the course will play soft. Plenty of sky cover, lots of rain on Thursday. Fairways and greens will probably stay soft throughout the week.  In terms of tee times, I think Thursday morning and Friday afternoon have the biggest advantage.
