Again, I just don’t think Phil is as smart as he thinks he is. I’m not a big Chamblee fan, but Phil doesn’t seem to understand what an ‘analyst’ is.

Meh. Hardly a big comment. Phil has an angle too.

I have to say I'm kind of on Phil's side here, although the timing seems strange to me, and I haven't watched Brandel much lately.  For quite a long time, Brandel was openly hostile to Tiger, crystalizing it with his pronouncement a few years ago that he didn't care if Tiger won 20 majors, he would never be the greatest.

I don't watch TGC any more except when they're covering an event I want to see, but from what little I've seen of Brandel lately, he seems to have mellowed on Tiger.  I don't know, maybe he's going after somebody else, and that's what Phil is talking about.

At any rate, although I agree with the article's basic premise that an analyst's job is to provide honest criticism when warranted, I disagree that that's what Brandel was doing during the years I never missed Golf Central.  He struck me as somebody like Cosell or Bayless, trying to distinguish himself by showing how unafraid he was to criticize big stars, as if that takes courage.

I actually wasn’t aware that he said that. That’s just plain ignorant. Of late I’ve heard Brandel’s ‘Critiques’ and never found them to be very denigrating at all. I also didn’t think his comments on Phil’s recent shenanigans were off base. Either way I don’t think too many care what he has to say anyway.

Brandel now says that Tiger is clearly the GOAT. It's not even close, he'll even say.

With those two, it's pretty much a "wash" for me. Don't care much for either one, and their opinions.

Although a bit of a cheap shot, I couldn't help but laugh at the "we don't see eye to eye" barb by Phil.....

I don't see anything wrong with what Phil said. Yes, Brandel is an analyst and probably makes a bigger name of himself by his strategies, but he's being overly negative for the sake of it. You can make most of the points Brandel has made, without the "Tiger will never be goat" stuff, but that's not Brandel's style. You can hardly act like that and not expect someone to call you out on it.

Well I think this certainly applies to Phil as well.

I agree with the article and @brocks in that Phil’s timing is not the best for such a comment. Brandel has always been snobbish, that’s his gig. But as far as negativity Phil dropped his pants at the US Open and furthered the tomfoolery by his lying about the motive. Then the whole tamping down the grass issue. I think that caused more disruption than any of Brandel’s comments.

I watch Tour golf for the golf. Not the blather.

Phil is a better golfer.  He provides great entertainment.

Chamblee is a better blatherer, but he's a side item. Analysts aren't important.

Most of them are not very good (golf compared to other pro sports).

Well most of the chatter away from the course is junk fill material yes. But I actually prefer listening to a panel of analysts talk over the rhetorical nonsense of ‘press interviews’ where you could just tell me who I am, what my score is (or pre-round) and I could speak for any of them. I would prefer to watch Phil talk to Brandel than some bland reporter asking ‘How do you feel about that 64?’

    • Hi @RetiredOldMan!  I am glad to see you are still playing and having good scores.  I hope that when I am 79, I am not only able to play, but still able to produce as good scores as you have been doing.   I look forward to hearing more of your success and your opinion of the senior flex shafts.
    • Hello Golfing Buddies, It has been awhile since I posted but I am the Retired Old Man that asked for advice because I suffered two "T.I.A.'s about switching from playing right handed to playing left handed.  I purchased a Callaway Edge Left handed golf clubs. I changed the grips to oversize grips.  Well, two weeks ago and still at 79 years old, I shot a 44 and 47 on a small course in my hometown.  I am currently changing my shafts from regular flex to Senior flex.  So, you can see' it can be done! So, you other old timers; get with the program! Blessings to all of you. Retired Old Man (Terry Warner)

    • Probably since the golfer has to swing the club back and up. The hands have to move back and up. You can feel them go back and up just by turning the shoulders and bending the right arm, because it brings your hands towards your right shoulder.  The difference is if you maintain width or not. Less width means a shorter feeling swing path so the more you need to lift the arms. Being as someone who gets the right arm bend at 110+ degrees, it's 100% a timing issue. I am use to like a 1.5+ second backswing. It probably should be like 1 second at most. Half a second or more will feel like an eternity. I have had swings where I keep my right arm straighter and I am still trying to time the downswing based on the old tempo.  Ideally, for me, it is probably going to be a much quicker and shorter (in duration) backswing, while keeping the right elbow straighter. Which also means more hinging to get swing length without over swinging.
