I think Webb is a bit of a pansy and probably felt cool to join the bad wagon of rule bashing. Poor guy just doesn’t realize he joined an ass hat wagon. Hopefully these guys (Fowler, Thomas recently) will come to their senses and admit they’re wrong.

The issue I have with "intent" as an excuse is where do you draw the line? It becomes very, very fuzzy if you try to add that, which is why you have to eliminate it.

Right there in Rule 1, it says,

All players are expected to play in the spirit of the game by acting with integrity – for example, by following the Rules, applying all penalties, and being honest in all aspects of play.

Not "very fuzzy" at all.

That isn’t fuzzy, no. Behavior is. Backstopping is obvious yet they continue to do it under the guise of ‘no intent.’ Hideki flat out lied that time he obviously stomped down his divot as his ball was rolling back headed for it. ‘ Oh I was just repairing my mark. I had no intention of improving my lie.’ Aside from backstopping I don’t think cheating is rampant on the tour but for the weekend players out there it has to be as clear as possible with no backdoors installed to muddle it up.

Take a stab at it . . . rewrite the Rules in the language that would do away with the need for players to act honestly.

Here's an easy start, take Rule 10 and reword it without the words deliberately and accidentally. Then ask around of your friends and see if that's the kind of game they'd like to play. :)

ps TV golf is just a TV show, don't let its mandate to sell Viagra and Buicks cloud your vision of golf.

I think he’s just saying you can’t just add intent everywhere or it will become abused. Imagine a cornerback saying “oh I didn’t intend to interfere, I was having a nightmare” and thus getting away with it.

He isn’t commenting on Rule 1 IMO.

P.S. Just finished my test.

I like this article even more:

webb-simpson-players-championship-rules.

Webb Simpson became the latest PGA Tour pro bitten by the rules of golf Sunday at the Players Championship, and he's calling for action.

But in making his next point, Simpson badly misstated another of the rules changes.

“Now you can be looking for a ball in the rough this high at a U.S. Open; if you step on it, it’s a penalty,” Simpson said, “It used not to be a penalty. So they have reversed that rule that saved the player from a mistake that anybody can make, and so why would they change that rule I’m not so sure about.”

The opposite is actually true.

So dumb.

OMG. That has to be an Onion article or something.

How can guys that have many thousands of dollars at stake not know the rules of their profession?

Why wouldn’t they at least pay their caddie to become a rules expert? That way they can still not know the rules, but have someone they trust guide them in sticky situations.

They changed the rule because it was “semi-unfair”. Then again, if you don’t want to accidentally move your ball searching in the rough, don’t hit it there. It’s a game of skill. Find the fairway.

I digress. It’s getting to the point that nothing surprises me, rules-wise, from these guys anymore.

I said it before and will say it again: Tired of these elementary school wanna be professional golfers whose basic response seems to be a combination of "why", "I don't wanna", "you're picking on me", and "I did not do my homework (and read the "rules" for my job).  No sympathy.  Even soccer, with its many rules, does not really take intent into consideration.

Either read the rules and ask questions before the round, or get a new job.  The whining bout so called intent is ruining the game. (As well, the announcers need a rule seminar as well..)

    • Wordle 1,652 X/6* 🟨⬜⬜⬜⬜ ⬜⬜🟨⬜⬜ ⬜🟩⬜🟩🟩 ⬜🟩🟩🟩🟩 ⬜🟩🟩🟩🟩 ⬜🟩🟩🟩🟩 Yup - one of those Wordle moments….
    • The term I hear most often is "double teeing" which means the course/club has starting times from both the #1 and #10 tee.  I have encountered this many times and we know if we are the first group off #10, we may well get to #1 and have to wait because there are groups still with tee times yet to tee of #1.  In most instances, where the course/club has a starter, he normally explains this situation.  In this case, the pro advised what you would could/would encounter making the turn to #1.  And, that is exactly what happened.  Probably would have been wise to talk to the pro after playing back 9 and ask when you could go off #1 since apparently that club does not double tee.   Regardless, the outburst towards the other group was uncalled for.  And, I don't blame the member for being upset.  As a member of a private club, you are responsible for the actions of your guest.  I have played many times as a guest in the UK and I am pretty damn sure my host was responsible for my actions while at the club.  I know at the clubs I have belonged to here in the US, that is the way it is.  As a matter of fact, the member may find himself being brought before management and facing possible suspension.  So, I don't blame him for being upset.  However, as the host, he really should have stepped up and put a stop to the OP's actions.  OP makes this statement "I now understand that standards are different on the "private course." But I'll take those lessons to the muni, too."  No, the standards are not different.  You, sir, seem to be just a bit hard headed and belligerent, even if you are college professor...which possibly explains a lot.   JMHO
    • Day 32: worked for about 10 minutes on my drill. Filmed it as well for a check in. I think it’s slightly better but still seeing some issues.
    • Day 44 (26 Dec 25)  -  played in the Friday men’s shootout with a twist - used the Toney Penna persimmons and MacGregor blades - had a blast playing these clubs.  They really help in zoning in on making solid ball contact.  Scoring was solid - had several looks at birdie and had a few par saves.  Overall a day of focused course management.
    • Day 2: 2025.12.27 Eighteen holes at Kauri Cliffs. Focusing on trying to keep flex in right leg during backswing.
