Mygolfspy came out with their 2019 Most Wanted Driver testing,

Ranked: The Best Drivers In Golf 2019

They use 35 golfers with handicaps ranging from plus to the mid-teens. They take 10-12 good struck shots from each individual. Now, they put good struck in quotations. I wonder if this means they ask if the strike was good and not actually confirmed with a launch monitor that can measure face impact.

To summarize,

Top 5 Ball Speed (in order) - Titleist TS3, Srixon Z585, Callaway Epic Flash, Callaway Epic Flash SZ, Taylormade M6
*All of these clubs were with in .8 mph of each other.

Top 5 lowest spin (in order) - Taylormade M6, Srixon Z585, Callaway EF SZ, PXG 0811X, Taylormade M5
*All of these clubs were with in 50 rpm in spin from each other

Top 5 Carry (in order) - Callaway EF, Callaway EF SZ, Srizon Z585, Taylormade M5, Titleist TS3
*All of these clubs were with in 1.5 yards carry of each other.

Top 5 Yards from Center - Cobra F9 Speedback, Taylormade M6, Ping G410 Plus, Callaway EF SZ, Taylormade M5
*All of these clubs were with in 1.5 yards offline from each other.

Surprisingly, the Ping G410 did not do well in this testing. Both models ended up in the bottom half in ball speed, low spin, and carry.

Last year the Ping G400 ended up in the top 5 in ball speed, low spin, and carry. It looks like the Ping G410 maintained similar ball speed to the G400, 134-135 mph range, but other companies have surpassed them this year. All the top five clubs averaged near 136 or over.

A shocking surprise is the Srixon Z585 that snuck into the top 5 in carry.

I'll have to wait and see when they put out the faster swing speed rankings, but my initial consideration this year is for Srixon Z585 and the Callaway Epic Flash Sub Zero. Though I am really liking how well the Taylormade M6 looks.

This is interesting stuff. Thanks for posting. I think this goes to show more than ever why you need to get fit. Everyone of these drivers may be a great performer FOR YOU, or maybe a total stinker FOR YOU. I got fit for a driver this year and it was really fun. I learned a lot and think I came out of it smarter and with a driver that's going to serve me well.

My bag is an ever-changing combination of clubs.

A mix I am forever tinkering with.

I have the Srixon Z 785 and I love it! It is the "pro" version, so maybe that's why it under performed with this test? Either way, I usually play Ping, and this Srixon driver is definitely equal if not better for me.  The shaft makes a difference because I got a better one than I've used in the past, but I like the forgiveness, trajectory, and distance I get from the Z785.

None.  I tried a couple of those (TM, Callaway) against my Callaway XR 16 Sub Zero from a couple years ago and none could beat the performance on launch monitor.  Most of it's all hype as we all know.

I tried out the Callaway Sub Zero yesterday. First, I haven't swung a club at full speed in a long time. I was also wearing my boots. I struggle a bit to find the ball consistently. I feel like I got about 3-4 good strikes.

I love the looks. I can't complain about the performance. For not being in-season form the distance was really good. I hate the sound and feel. The solid strikes just don't feel right. It feels super dull and non-responsive. I am really disappointed there. I'll probably get the club another go at some point, but if the feel is the same then I doubt I'll get the club.

I'll probably throw in the Titleist TS3, and the Taylormade M5/6 into the mix for this year. I really like the Taylormade looks.

I tested the Tayloemade M5, Cobra F9, and the Titleist TS3.

Right now I like the M5 and the F9 the most. I think I’m leaning towards the F9 due to price. I don’t think the M5 out performs the F9 by that much to warrant the extra $$$.

You thinking the yellow one or white one? I prefer the looks of the white one but the yellow grew on my when I saw it in person.

I have had my Callaway Epic Flash for about three weeks.  Last week, I hit my longest drive ever.  I missed only one fairway.  Best driver I have ever hit.

I just can't get past the sound. The club feels dead to me, no pop or substance to a good strike.

That's the problem with hitting indoors. You don't see the ball flying out there. And things can sound a bit differently.

I'm not saying the sound's gonna be that different, but consider how at Best Buy they amp up the saturation and contrast on TVs and they look good in the store, but those aren't the settings you'd ever use at home?

I am excited about the Maltby ISO-T driver which will be available in April.

I kind of want to check out the Toue Edge Exotics EXS and the Ping G410. I don’t spend that much for my clubs but the Ping still intrigues me.

So I did a driver fitting today.

First, I revoke my comments on the sound and feel with the Flash. It was more the user than the club. Though I still didn’t like it as much as the Cobra or Taylormade in terms of sound. It wasn’t terrible. It was actually close to my GBB Epic.

Im terms of top distance, Taylormade won.

I’m terms of average distance, they were all with in user error in carry.

In terms of dispersion the Flash fell way short of the M5 and the F9. The Flash was prone to hooks. I think this is due to the inconsistency in spin.

In terms of variance in numbers, this is where the F9 out classes the other two. The Flash has a huge variance, near 1000 spin to mid 2000 spin. Even on similar feeling strikes. The Taylormade was a bit better, but more on the high end. It ranged from 1900-3000. With the average in the high 2000’s. The Taylormade did protect me against the snap left because of the higher spin loft. The F9 did a lot better. The spin was hard to drop bellow 1700, and it stayed with in a 2100 to 2500 range for the majority of the shots. This produces a good shot dispersion and carry consistency for me.

My build is the F9, 9.0 degrees, weight forward, 6.5 HZRDUS Black Smoke.

I got to hit the Ping G 410 Plus this morning. Damn, I really liked it. I had the Tensei CK Orange 66g Stiff shaft in it. The feel was very smooth and light. Sound was impressive. Hit some real nice draws with it as well as dead straight. It looks great and feels solid. I hit the Epic Flash a little further but less accuracy. The Ping seemed a bit more forgiving to me than the Flash. Tough choice. I haven't hit any TaylorMade or Cobra drivers yet.

    • @boogielicious and I are definitely in for the Stay & Play and will need the extra night's stay on Friday. I don't know what the plans are for our group on Friday but even if we don't make it for dinner with the rest of the Friday arrivals, I'll be more than happy to meet up somewhere for a beer or something.
    • Taking your dispersion and distance in consideration I analyzed the 4 posible ways to play the hole, or at least the ones that were listed here. I took the brown grass on the left as fescue were you need to punch out sideways to the fairway and rigth of the car path to be fescue too.  Driver "going for the green"  You have to aim more rigth, to the bunker in order to center your shotzone in between the fescue.  Wood of 240 over the bunkers I already like this one more for you. More room to land between the fescue. Balls in the fescue 11% down from 30% with driver. Improve of score from 4.55 to 4.40. 4 iron 210 yards besides the bunkers.    Also a wide area and your shot zone is better than previous ones. This makes almost the fescue dissapear. You really need to hit a bad one (sometimes shit happens). Because of that and only having 120 yards in this is the best choice so far. Down to 4.32 from 4.40. Finally the 6 Iron 180 yards to avoid all trouble.    Wide area an narrow dispersion for almost been in the fairway all the time. Similar than the previous one but 25 yards farther for the hole to avoid been in the bunkers. Average remains the same, 4.33 to 4.32.  Conclusion is easy. Either your 4iron or 6 iron of the tee are equaly good for you. Glad that you made par!
    • Wish I could have spent 5 minutes in the middle of the morning round to hit some balls at the range. Just did much more of right side through with keeping the shoulders feeling level (not dipping), and I was flushing them. Lol. Maybe too much focus on hands stuff while playing.
    • Last year I made an excel that can easily measure with my own SG data the average score for each club of the tee. Even the difference in score if you aim more left or right with the same club. I like it because it can be tweaked to account for different kind of rough, trees, hazards, greens etc.     As an example, On Par 5's that you have fescue on both sides were you can count them as a water hazard (penalty or punch out sideways), unless 3 wood or hybrid lands in a wider area between the fescue you should always hit driver. With a shorter club you are going to hit a couple less balls in the fescue than driver but you are not going to offset the fact that 100% of the shots are going to be played 30 or more yards longer. Here is a 560 par 5. Driver distance 280 yards total, 3 wood 250, hybrid 220. Distance between fescue is 30 yards (pretty tight). Dispersion for Driver is 62 yards. 56 for 3 wood and 49 for hybrid. Aiming of course at the middle of the fairway (20 yards wide) with driver you are going to hit 34% of balls on the fescue (17% left/17% right). 48% to the fairway and the rest to the rough.  The average score is going to be around 5.14. Looking at the result with 3 wood and hybrid you are going to hit less balls in the fescue but because of having longer 2nd shots you are going to score slightly worst. 5.17 and 5.25 respectively.    Things changes when the fescue is taller and you are probably going to loose the ball so changing the penalty of hitting there playing a 3 wood or hybrid gives a better score in the hole.  Off course 30 yards between penalty hazards is way to small. You normally have 60 or more, in that cases the score is going to be more close to 5 and been the Driver the weapon of choice.  The point is to see that no matter how tight the hole is, depending on the hole sometimes Driver is the play and sometimes 6 irons is the play. Is easy to see that on easy holes, but holes like this:  you need to crunch the numbers to find the best strategy.
