Today Jack Nicklaus added some star power to Mitt Romney's campaign today, encouraging Ohio voters to elect the Republican as a way to restore America's greatness.

President Obama leads Romney by an average of about 5 percentage points in Ohio, according to seven recent statewide polls compiled by RealClearPolitics.

Quote:

Nicklaus , one of Ohio's favorite sons, told the audience in Westerville that when he travels the world people "want us to be like the America we were."  Nicklaus said Romney would bring "a real recovery" to the American economy and restore America's standing around the globe.

"This campaign isn't about what's best for me," Nicklaus said, telling the crowd that Romney and running mate Paul Ryan would say "yes, we will" in order to help the next generation.

And More

Quote:

“When I was competing, I didn’t lean on someone else in tough times," Nicklaus said, comparing his golfing career to the government. "I know what I had to do on the golf course to succeed, and when I won I certainly didn’t apologize for my success.”

On why America needs to elect Romney in November, he said, “We can’t keep doing what we’ve been doing. We have to look at problems at hand and change them."

Afterward, Romney said, "What you heard from the Golden Bear, what you heard from the greatest athlete of the 20th century, the words that he spoke, have touched my heart, and I'm sure they touched your hearts as well.”

An entrepreneur doesn't endorse the Marxist wannabe democrat..........it's no surprise.  This hardly belongs in a golf discussion forum. (just because Jack is a golfer)

Romney is a genius. Forget about Michael Jordan, Mohammad Ali, Jim Brown, Wayne Gretzky, Babe Ruth and many others. Absolutely has to be Jack, hands down.

From Paul Ryan comparing the NFL debacle in Green Bay to politics, to Mitt Romney saying airplanes should have windows that are able to be opened for fresh air... I can only hope that Obama wins again or we are in a major pile of F come 2013.

I'm just speechless.... for once.

Seems like an odd celeb choice to try and ramp up your campaign if you're a republican. Pretty sure he's already got the conservative, old fart vote locked in and he's currently behind in the polls. Preaching to the choir is a wasted move IMO. The people he isn't reaching couldn't care less about Jack.

That is correct ... but some of them are really close, like 54% to 53% in at least one of those states.

Well I really like Jack and think he is probably (but arguably) the greatest golfer in my life time.  I am sorry to see him endorse any candidate.  Somehow it diminishes him in my eyes.   I always thought he was "above the fray".

Arguing politics is like walking into a door expecting that at that very moment all of your atoms will perfectly align their electrons with the door so that you may pass straight on through.

It is about that useless.

And, by the way, the probability of walking through a door or wall is NOT zero....... Just really really really close.

I though dead people only voted. Now they are answering polls.

We are so screwed. Our choices are

1) The guy that in 3.5 years has been able to stop the decline but not really get anything going and whose big achievement we will not be able to judge for another 4+ years. Barack might be a fun guy to hang out wiht but it is hard to say he has been overly effective without majorities in both houses.

2) They guy that wants to go back to double down (less regulation, lower taxes, and more government handouts to private companies) the policies the ruined our economy in the first place. Throw in that he doesn't understand that old white people (a good chunk of 47%) will vote for him and he is a likely tax cheat (i.e. returns before 2007 and after 2010 were fine. Is it coincidence that there was an amnesty for swiss bank accounts in 2009?)

I am glad the electoral college makes my vote meaningless. Otherwise I would feel bad about having to pick one of them.

I think Jack ought to stick to golf. If Mitt was on tour he'd never pick a club, he'd just flip flop between two clubs.

(Rant alert.)

Oh, good Lord, are we still bringing that up four years after the fact? The context is clear that then-candidate Obama made a slip of the tongue and said 57 when he clearly meant 47. He had campaigned in all but one of the 48 contiguous states, minus Alaska and Hawaii. The asininity of using such a mundane error of speech as an attack drove me nuts in 2008, and it drives me nuts now. There are plenty of criticisms of substantive value about the President that can be brought up for debate.

(End of rant.)

In any case, we live in a country where people may freely show their support for any political candidate they so choose, and there is no reason to treat that person's decision with anything less than respect. That said, Mitt Romney's going to need a lot more than the Golden Bear on his side if he wants to win Ohio.

Absolutely.  Jack explains how HE did not lean on somebody else in tough times while competing.  Romney is in a competition right now, and based on the polls I'd say that he is in tough times.  What Jack brags about not doing in his day is EXACTLY what Romney IS doing today.

Get it now?

    • after some years experimenting around, I've settled on a mixed bag of mostly Pat Simmons vintage Tiger Sharks (the ones with the blue enamal on back of the clubheads): 3 thru 9 iron, + 3 wedges (PW, sand, chipper). Those super heavy clubheads really help me get my swing down and thru the ball. Also I carry an old Taylor 18-degree rescue club, 17-degree and 14 degree ImagineGolf metalwoods, and the famous Pat Simmons "alien" 1-iron. Finally a real brick-on-a-stick, the big-headed Bettinardi Ben Hogan model putter which is excellent for taking the break out of short putts and getting the ball hole high on long ones. Wait....is that 15 clubs? Oh well....
    • this topic brought to mind one my favorite golf-spectator memories. Back when, living in Santa Barbara CA, parked in my yellow cab just behind the 10th tee  (c. 380 yard par 4) at SB Muni golf course while eating lunch. A twosome comes by, and first up is this fat little mexican guy who takes a kinda squirelly practice swing, then addresses the ball and bashes a long, high, perfectly straight drive up to w/in about 5 yards of the green. Other guy is dressed to the 9's, pulls out what looks like a $300 driver....and hits a maybe 150-yard pop fly. Slams clubhead to the ground and yells, "it's fat! It's fat! Everything is fat today!!"  And that's how I learned what a "fat" shot is.
    • day 57. Technique practice in the net. Really trying to slow down.
    • It may not be surprising that in the previous 7,064 posts, this particular point has been discussed. To which I will counter: If we're talking about results, why only the majors? Unless you know something that I don't, neither of us are in any position to judge whether Woods or Nicklaus lived their overall life better, not that such a thing is even objectively measurable, nor is it relevant to the discussion.
    • As we've had to tell other people, the topic is which is the better GOLFER, not human being.
