  1. 1. If Tiger had tossed a club in the water at Doral... (select all that apply)

    • He would have been praised for his humanness, passion and general boyish wonderfulness
      1
    • He would have been lambasted for continuing to set a poor example for kids
      30
    • The reaction would have been somewhere in between
      5
    • The Sand Trap Tiger Haters (you know who you are) would be flooding the Tour section with vitriol claiming Tiger's action will bring about the end of Western Civilization.
      18
    • Brandel Chamblis would write an article showing Tiger's club throwing form has been ruined due to his work with Sean Foley.

Take the poll at the bottom of the link as well. Β We will compare TST results to Shackleford's.

Poll: If Tiger Had Tossed A Club Into A DoralΒ Lake...

Several commenters here immediately reacted toΒ Rory McIlroy'sΒ funny-but-childishΒ club toss intoΒ aΒ DoralΒ lake by immediately pointing out thatΒ Tiger WoodsΒ would not have gotten the free pass that young Rory enjoyed (especially from the fawning British press!).ESPN.com's Bob HarigΒ suggestedΒ a Woods chuck into waterΒ would have prompted "indignation" that "would have blown up the Internet." I don't think he's wrong.

Sorry for the typo in the last question. I cannot edit the poll. It is Chamblee' not 'Chamblis'.

Without any doubt, Tiger would have been skewered if he did this.Β  He has been skewered for far less...

Agree. Would never happen though. He simply can't make that kind of athletic move these days! :-)

Tiger wouldn't throw his club in the water because he'd have stiffed that shot.

There is no doubt that there are multiple standards when it comes to acting out on the course. Β Dufner would be praised for giving his aggressions a release. Β For McIlroy it's just the silly act of an excitable kid. Β Bubba would be a whiny crybaby, and Tiger would be showing once more that he's the anti-Christ.

I voted differently in the two polls. TST isn't a microcosm of the outside world and I think the reactions in here vs out there aren't necessarily going to be the same. I think the reaction to Tiger doing the toss would be more tempered out there than in here. Just my two bits.

You forgot to add the rage from PEDs caused him to lose control and throw the club in the water.

I voted The SandTrap Haters one. Tiger's injury gets barely a response on the major sports networks. His stock has dropped in terms of sporting news. Maybe if he actually was in contention it would matter more.

Really the only ones who would outcry are those who are the extreme Tiger haters.

You forgot to add the rage from PEDs caused him to lose control and throw the club in the water.

I voted "reaction in between" and "sand trap haters club."

For the record, it would certainly have been a different reaction than Rory got, but, it would warrant a different reaction than Rory got. Β Every player warrants a different reaction, because, well, they're different players. Β As an example, Marcel Seim .

I read the Monday morning round-up on golf.com today and I agree with the consensus there. Β  Three points I think:

1 - Β As far as press reaction and how it's covered, Rory has been more open and nicer with the press and therefore he gets coverage that doesn't beat him up for it. Β The consensus that I got from the roundtable was that Rory has a lot of good will built up, while Tiger had spent his a long time ago. Β  This is similar to the Dan Jenkins fake interview. Β  The press was largely on Jenkins' side. Β And I think that a lot of that has to do with the more combative relationship that Tiger has with the press.

Now as Erik and others here will state, Tiger has more on his shoulders than anyone else and he can't make everyone happy. Β  And he's not as open about himself like many other players. Β  That's not exactly the point here, you can agree or disagree with that. Β  There's a lot to support Tiger's side on that one. Β But the point is actually that the press, who would report and comment on this, has a lot of people who do dislike him or the way that he has responded to them. Β  So yeah, I do think that Tiger would get it worse just based on that.

2 - Β Tiger has been caught swearing, slamming clubs (throwing on occasion) and having a temper a lot over the years. Β  Rory hasn't. Β  I would hope that if Rory had a string of temper moments that they would criticize him, just like Tiger has been. Β  While taking against his whole career, Tiger is hardly someone who needs anger management. Β However he's been showing his temper off for a number of years, so it does become the "here we go again" mantra.

What I don't get is that Steve Pate, who is famous for showing his anger gets a pass while Sergio Garcia doesn't. Β True, Pate (The Volcano) is no where near the exposure of Tiger, Rory or Sergio. Β  However it almost seems accepted for Pate, yet Sergio (who has had his share of blowups) gets hit for his outbursts more. Β  Perhaps because Sergio mouths off and says dumber things sometimes? Β  Anyway, the fact is that it took several incidents for Sergio to get some hard core criticism. Β  So if doing it occasionally is an outlier, I don't think it'll get you slammed. Β  Do it enough where people remember, and it becomes a narrative.

Also, I think that this was swept under the rug more when Tiger was playing better. Β  Yes, there were comments about it, but I think the temper stuff has been reported and commented on more since the fire hydrant. Β  So people kind of piled on after that.

3 - Β Rory owned up to it and even made fun of himself a little bit for it. Β  Despite what you think about Tiger, he's always been a "no comment and move on" kind of guy. Β  While he might make a statement if asked, he doesn't laugh at himself very well and take it on the chin. Β  Recently I think that's changed a little bit. Β  He's more self effacing and humanized with the latest troubles, and I think that's to his credit and it will help him in the long run. Β  But the fact is that Rory did own up to it and I saw where Trump came up to him and returned it, having had a scuba diver go get it. Β  I can't see someone doing that with Tiger and getting a photo of it, etc...

There really is a fourth one too. Β  It's the same as a lot of other issues people have with Tiger. Β  He's the biggest player in 20-30 years and for as much as he moves the needle, he does polarize people more than most other golfers. Β  Just because of that, anything he does that someone doesn't like will get a pile-on. Β Or people defending him to the hilt if they support him. Β  Just like any President, since politics are involved, you'll get people who will criticize the President for any reason.

2 - You don't consider throwing a club in the water a temper tantrum? Β How about walking away from a tournament and pretending he has a toothache? Β He has shown a temper a number of times. Β You are just cutting him slack at the moment.

There you have it. Β Tiger is polarizing. Β He dominated for a long time, and that alone alienates some people. Β He's had personality and "other" issues. Β Now that he's slipped, those who didn't really care for him in the first place will inevitably take it as a signal to dump all they can.

Rory hasn't been around long enough, or in the public eye during any "incidents" yet, so he gets the pass. Β He may turn out to be the All American Boy, who knows? Β (yeah, yeah, I know he's Irish, but that didn't fit the image I was going for ;-) ) Β Lots of time yet in his career for him to accumulate some hate followers.

I wouldn't state that. I think Rory has about the same amount of pressure on him as Tiger did.

Tiger also never threw a club into the lake AFAIK, withdrew with dubious reasons, etc. Tiger would have been grilled, for months and months, had he broken off an engagement like Rory did.

I don't think they're treated similarly. Rory gets treated more softly IMO. He's had to apologize on numerous occasions. Tiger had to apologize for saying he putted like a spaz one time because the word is used in the UK differently than it's used inΒ the U.S.
