We’ll see if he can break through the “non-Tiger pack” in the majors department. Rory seems to have stalled at 4. Jordan is stalled at 3. Phil is probably done at 5. DJ and Rose are anomalies at 1. This will be number four today. And I do think he can keep this going a while and not stall out.

The one thing he has that’s better than Rory, DJ and Jordan is the mental game. To me, Koepka and Tiger are way above the rest of golf in that area. Koepka just doesn’t seem to be bothered by anything and doesn’t flinch. Rory and Jordan get too wired at times. If you have that in your corner with the talent, as long as he doesn’t lose it, I don’t see why he can’t win a lot more. I definitely wouldn’t bet against him at Pebble. His game is perfect for that course. He’ll annhialate those three par-5s and a couple of those short par-4s. Five of the par-4s are right around 400 yards or less. And 6 and 18 are pretty short par-5s. Only thing that could stump him would be wind.

It’s a really long, hard golf course. The best players in the world are struggling. Doesn’t seem so boring to me…

I’m not talking about the PGA. The course is boring to play.

I agree. Thousands of people don't sleep overnight in their cars to play it because it's so boring and "dull". ;-)

The course is boring to play.

Driver to a narrow fairway. If you miss pitch out. If you hit, high long iron to a bunkered green without many run-up spots at all (rough fronts and bunkers often), to a relatively flat oval green.

And all in six hours.

BORING as hell to play. Never any real decisions or options.

Everyone looks like they have a “good mental game” when they’re winning.

How was Tiger’s mental game when he was duffing chips and missing two footers? Answer: virtually identical to how it was when he won a US Open by 15. Heck maybe even better since he was older and more experienced.

... did someone going to commercial (just before 11:30 AM Eastern, Sunday 5/19) just refer to it as the "PGA Tour championship?"

Phil tee shot on 12, did he just hit a car?  That's one of my fears when I play...

Sleep in your car for the reward of playing a course that will, most likely, beat the pants of you? What's wrong with those people?

I would not want to work at Dick's Sporting Goods tomorrow. They're going to be getting a lot of returns on drivers since Rory didn't win. Did they have a return policy on that or if you bought it, you're stuck with it? I was thinking of buying one and if Rory didn't win, I'd return it, but I wasn't sure if that was allowed and never got around to it.

I was thinking exactly the same thing. I must confess I'm intrigued. It sounds beautifully old fashioned.

In all of the chatter to be found online about who actually designed it, I found this observation:

Quote

The problem with these views of the greens are because they are being seen through the eyes of today's course critic. Take a look at them through the eyes of the designer in 1934 and your view may change. The Black course was one of the longest courses to be found when played from the tips. As a result this meant that many of the par fours in particular would have second shots played into them with either a long iron or a fairway wood. This meant that, in order to be fair (and Tillinghast believed in fair even while being penal), the greens needed to be built in such a fashion that they could provide a putting challenge while still accepting a well-struck shot. Examine the greens and you will see that the landing areas for a properly played shot that has little backspin (common in that day) was very small and difficult to hit. This meant that one would find themselves in either the great bunkers or (worse) the heavy rough. Par therefor was a very good score. For the player who reached the putting surface in regulation, though there were not the great undulations of other courses, there were many subtleties of break and gentle changes in elevation.

This would be correct if they were hitting mid irons or shorter. Hitting a long iron or wood into a green on a par 4 means that majority of the time an amateur will not even hit the green if it was a normal course. Now you evaluate the greens, put bunkers in front, and make them so undulating that a well struck shot (a ball that hits the green if we assume golfers would be using long irons or woods) is penalized.

No, I do not believe that to be good logic to say this course should not be judged by modern logic. It might be a better course today, but it's a worse course in the past.

Care to elaborate? Why is it dull? I've never seen that adjective used to describe it.

Partly what others have said. Just seems to demand a very one dimensional style of golf to win here, but maybe that’s because BK is way out ahead doing what he does (which would probably be successful on most golf courses).

Ill probably get murdered for this but I feel like a few of the USPGA and US Open courses have been a bit samey of late.

Maybe this is a good visualization.

Imagine a par 3 course were very hole requires you to hit a 5 iron or more. Now, every green is elevated, protected by bunkers, and half the time the tees are placed in thick rough. Even if you hit the green your ball could still bounce off into rough or a bunker.

Just saying, that would be horrible to play 😉

I'm really interested in seeing what BK does at Pebble Beach and if he tries to explode through that course. It's pretty short compared to Bethpage, and if he takes driver on many of the holes, he can be hitting pitch shots into 3 or 4 of the par-4s. He will drive the 4th and may try and cut the corner on 11 to get that close. He may be able to get close to driving 15 as well, depending on the wind. His strategy of just bombing it down there as close to the pin as possible is paying dividends this week and he can probably do it at Pebble as well. Like I said before, I'd bet money he three-peats. Four-peats? WInged Foot might be his kryptonite.

I'll agree with that. They are kind of boring. Pebble will be different, because it's not a bomb and gouge course even at 7,040 yards or whatever it's set up at for the US Open.

Pebble is a second shot golf course mainly because of the small greens.
