Not really, no.

Please stay more current. The post you quoted is from nearly three months ago, and the context of that comment is still Tommy Fleetwood, while your question is not.

Most times when the media says a player is overrated, the issue was with the media rating them too high to begin with. Then they start the stories about the athlete failing to meet their unrealistic expectations.

True, but to be over or under rated somebody has to set the bar. Its usually member of the media. Certainly I have never heard Fleetwood say how great is or is going to be.

Pre-heating an oven to 350 degrees is over-rated.  So is Kraft macaroni and cheese.  "Over-rated" is a synonym for "known".

Congrats to Tommy - for finishing top 20 in the Tiger Invitational. Which is also dead last, only 23 shots behind Viktor; but it is good for $100,000 and 2.09 OWGR points.
This is an event that can keep someone Tommy up in the rankings.

I agree that the OWGR shouldn’t award points for finishing last. They may want to rework distribution in limited field events.

Well, the OP is from 2019, so…

Zero wins on the PGA Tour speaks to being "overrated," though. And for awhile, he was on "favorites" lists to win a major due to a few back-door finishes.

“When it calms down, I’ll look at the things I did well and the things I can learn from.”

Tommy Fleetwood after 3 putting ( choking) on 18 to lose The Travelers 2025 to Bradley.

Yeah I don’t think so. With 6 runner ups and 42 top tens….he’s  just not a finisher. He’s way past the ‘learning’ schtick when it comes to winning on the PGA TOUR.

I think Tommy knows he laid yet another egg. I'm sure he will search his soul and probably come up empty handed, him being a 'non-closer' and all but don't know what else y'all expected him to say. Good on him for showing a bit of class after a gut punch.

The Kraft Deluxe Mac and Cheese isn't over rated.... It's under-rated take your Velveeta and Shells and stick 'em. Shove the Cracker Barrel Mac in the trash. I'm on Team Kraft Deluxe all day and twice on Sunday.

Agreed. He handled it about as well as you could. Everyone saw what happened.

A lot of folks are taking about the second putt. I think the first putt is where he was feeling the nerves. Left that one mighty short.

I've never thought he was "over-rated". As a guy who will place sports wagers from time to time. I've always viewed Tommy as a money maker... Money maker for me that is. He's great to bet on in the majors.

  1. He's not American.
  2. He has no wins on the PGA Tour.
  3. He often finishes top twenty in majors.

Which makes him an ideal guy to bet on in the majors. You can bet him at a much higher value than a guy like Tony Finau (whom I like but) who has basically a similar record in major tournaments.

You'll make more money betting Tommy as a top-20 in majors than betting Tony as a top-20 in majors. ... Good value there. So, in my mind he's not over-rated and I hope he doesn't become over rated or I will lose value on those bets. 😁

I'm actually hoping this gaff will stick in people's minds. The sports books may offer him as even higher value. I like him for top-20 at the British Open.

Looking back from 2019 to now, I think more than ever Tommy is accurately rated as a top 20 guy and maybe a choker but 6 runner-ups is brutal. He can't catch a break. But as @ChetlovesMer has mentioned.

I think he's been one of the better players and an awesome image for the tour. Great with the media and fans. How many other top players would do the same interview after that loss? Could argue they don't have to because they win but he's all class in my opinion.

I've seen this video from Kip Henley going around and wanted to hear your opinions.

I don't think Tommy lost just for that putt, let alone anything on 18 with finishing +2 on the day. But I think the golf gods aren't helping him out at all either. No one wants a mulligan more than Tommy.

He can't catch a break or am I wrong?

I'm almost positive the same thing happened to you on your par putt on the 15th at Cranberry Highlands. 👍😁👍

I would love to blame that if I could. But just not a good roll. We need the video review 😂

    • Day 430 - 2025-12-04 Slow motion backswings (with chippy shots) with AlmostGolf balls.
    • Day 24 (4 Dec 25) - Spent about an hour working with the new 55° wedge in the backyard.  Kept all shots to under 20yds.  Big focus - not decelerating thru downswing and keeping speed up with abbreviated backswing.  Nothing like hitting a low flighted chip with plenty of check spin and then purpose to float a pitch of similar distance.
    • Day 114 12-4 Put some work in on backswing, moving the hips correctly, then feeling over to lead side. Didn't hit any balls was just focused on keeping flowy and moving better. I'll probably do another session tonight and add in some foam balls.
    • Didn't say anything about your understanding in my post.  Well, if you are not insisting on alignment with logic of the WHS, then no.  Try me/us. What do you want from us then?? You are not making sense. You come here and post in an open forum, question a system that is constructed with logic, without using any of your own and then give us a small window of your personal experience to support your narrative which at first sight does not makes sense.  I mean, if you are a point of swearing then I would suggest you cut your losses and humor a more gullible audience elsewhere. Good heavens.
    • I have access to far more data (including surveys and polls) than you do with your anecdotes. I mean this as plainly and literally as possible: you’ve demonstrated that you do not. They would, one way or the other.
