What do you think happens if Sungjae Im bulks up like Bryson?

Expand

Isn't he already fairly bulky? He is an inch shorter than Bryson, and only weighs 40 pounds less. If you are suggesting that he puts on 60-70 pounds like Bryson did, that puts him in Daly territory. If you are suggesting he lifts weights and puts on 40 pounds, then I could see a case for it. I don't think either will happen because it seems that Im is more intent on playing golf than hitting the gym. Most of the guys on tour now have a workout regiment aside from hitting balls, but I don't think that Im is one of those players based on his physical form.

The caveat is that I have no idea what his workout or training regiment is right now. On the flip side, he hits it so "straight down the middle" (cue the Bing Crosby) that there is no reason for him to change anything at the moment. He is 18 on the OWGR right now at the age of 22. He has an ample amount of time to continue to develop his game, but I don't think that the mega-bulk is in the near future.

Lastly, I'll entertain the idea of him actually doing this (let us say by the start of the 2021-22 season). I'd imagine that unless he is as crazy committed as Bryson is, he would fall apart. It would be a flash in the pan, and a reminder that distance isn't the whole game (just 50-75 percent of it if you have reasonable accuracy, i.e. not losing balls or stokes from wayward drives), and can't be had by all or must be worked for on a level that puts physical fitness before golf practice. I don't think that a 75% commitment to this idea would yield favorable results.

I didn't realize until the end that the guy with the long hair is Kyle Berkshire, the current long drive #1. No idea who the scrawny guy is but he sucks.

Kyle grew up in my area, at a neighboring club.  I've been following him a bit the last few years.  He makes some vlogs on youtube and his IG account can be a fun follow.  He did vlog playing at my club and it was really cool to see how he played it.  Seems like a good kid who's working hard on his game to try to make the tour. I think he works with Bernie Najar out of Caves Valley.

There's a video somewhere of Kyle giving Phil Mickelson some long-driving tips and he continually refers to Phil as Mr. Mickelson.  Good kid.

At the end of that video, he says, can I call you Phil, lol.

DeChambeau said that once he reaches between 207 and 210 mph average ball speed with his driver (he currently leads the PGA Tour at 192.80 mph and has yet to break the 200-mph mark in competition), he will finally be satisfied with his distance quest.

Bryson DeChambeau said that his average ball speed goal is up to 210 mph, and he hit the 211 mph mark on the range Monday at Kapalua.

To each their own.  I don't push that much weight, but Bryson's weight-training regimen doesn't otherwise appear much different from the one I've been doing for 8-10 years.  It's kept me in good enough shape to start playing golf at the ripe old age of 69 :)

GOLF’S LONGEST HITTER has low testosterone. DeChambeau learned this recently, during one of those audits of his body that he loves so much. The steroid jokes started after he bulked up and started bombing drives across state lines. We should note here that the PGA tests him all the time. Many other athletes have, of course, beaten drug tests, but if you saw DeChambeau with his shirt off at the gym, you would probably not think, “That guy is on steroids.” Everything is in proportion. He even has a bit of baby fat. He is huge only for a golfer.

Low testosterone is fairly common in athletes with intense training routines. Cyclist can get this.

I remember reading this when the article came out and the one thing that struck me is it seemed to me that the author didn't really understand what Bryson was doing with his lower-lofted driver. The author mentioned trying to get more roll, but I thought Bryson was more so working hard to reduce spin off the driver by optimizing his dynamic loft as compared to his launch angle.

    • Episode, yes. I’m used to just watching YouTube. 🤣
    • Additionally, if housing is just a stroke instead of stroke and distance… more houses (and children playing in their yards, older folks tending to their gardens, etc.) will be in danger as golfers don't fear the OB as much. The stiffer penalty is a safety help, too. Play the MLR. And pay more attention to your golf ball. YES! Good point he missed entirely. He said the same penalty, but it's actually LESSER to lose your ball or literally hit it off the course. At best. Yep.
    • Use a tripod, please. Slow mo, good camera angles. If not a tripod (they're like $20 for a decent one, good investment in your golf game and useful outside of golf, too), at least rest it on something wrist height.
    • This!!!!! I will even throw my hat down over the ball to mark the sport and we will catch up the next hole.  Reminds me of league play couple weeks ago.  My group on the green of a par 5. When we were done putting one of the guys notices a ball at the back of the green. it had not been there when we got to the green. So the player picked up the ball, cause who doesnt want a free ball. at the19th hole and the group behind us asked if had found a top-flight (ball name changed to protect the participants) and then one guys says "yeah Bobby found it and picked it up". Since the golfer lost his ball on a blind shot, he had to take the penalty (league rule 1 stroke) and ended up loosing the match by 1 stroke and 1 hole (matches consist of 2 points match play, 2 points stoke).   golfer tried to plead with league leadership, but lost is lost. Suffice to say Bobby not been seen around the 19th in a few weeks!
