Ugh. Just what we need. In what universe is this an important enough topic for Congress to get involved? I want my money back.

I agree that there are far more important issues for them to work on.

However there is a reason they have committees, and if there is going to be money flowing as a part of the merger and they are going charge spectators and broadcast on TV networks, a closer look by non-partisan hacks (hopefully), is not a bad thing.
Not to mention congress can then refer their finding to DOJ and request an investigation. Which of course the DOJ does not blindly follow the referral, but sometimes.

Not to oversimplify this but PIF has a seat at the table and now has some influence. I am not sure if they will exert much influence, but they do have it because of the purse strings. The question I ask is have they accomplished their goals of becoming part of the world professional golf stage? Absolutely. Do they really want to be involved in the day-to-day? Not so much. As long as everything lines up and advances their goals they should be happy being in the background and in the Board Room.

This article is from last week, but provides a backgrounder on Yasir Al-Rumayyan. It's a gift link, so you don't need to be subbed to WaPo to read it. Below it is an interview if you want to get a feel for him in person.

The PGA Tour’s Saudi disrupter loves the game and is fiercely loyal to Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman.

I'm trying to draw parallels to the Newcastle United purchase, not as familiar with football. That was like a half a billion dollar deal not sure exactly how much and Boris Johnson's cabinet whisked that through

Does not matter if you had to google it, or you knew about it.
The company has been around and using the logo since 2003.
you would think that LIV and Mickelson would have had lawyers or someone look into it before using the logo.
Now they will need to settle.
I know this is meaningless and insignificant for the SA slushfund, but could have been avoided.

What happens if this agreement falls apart? LIV goes on, PGAT runs out of money? Then what.

Sloppy work to be sure.

This is usually the kind of thing some mom & pop operation gets stomped on for. The big boys usually hire the specialists to make sure they are in the clear.

LIV will be well funded, yet still have a dull-boring product.
PGAT would have to adjust their purses based on cash flow and budget.

Seems LIV is funded like they are the "big boys" but operate like bush league!

Perhaps so they could argue that they're owed $.

What did I say that prompted this type of response? I'm curious because it's not like I said they were off the hook or something.

As I said, sometimes it's tough to find a logo. It's not as easily searchable as a word mark. And for all we know they searched extensively for "HF" logos… but didn't consider that it might be "FF".

So, I could see how they missed the FF company.

But, now that they know, they should cease using it, or license it, or whatever.

We've had to fight copyright or trademark infringement, too. It generally starts with a cease and desist.

That's because your expertise is teaching and coaching golf and running this board.  There are people whose job it is to vet logos and they missed it. It happens.*

But then when the logo-holder told them they were infringing they tried to just blow them off.  It wouldn't surprise me if that ups the financial ante for infringement.

I confess to finding it excessively amusing that of all the LIV teams this happened to Phil's.

Someone asked why they waited a year to raise the issue.  I'd guess that they were unaware, previously.  Maybe most people have heard of LIV and have heard of Phil, but I doubt that anyone other than a very seriously devoted LIV fan would have a clue about what Phil's team's logo was.  People say they never heard of Fallen Footwear before, but I would ask them if they knew what Phil's team's logo was before this came up.

So I agree with you that they will have to change the logo or pay to license it.

*It's a little different, but the Washington NFL team picked a name that it turned out they couldn't trademark.  And I remember your experience with your trademark or logo being infringed.

All I will say is these are very very similar and I would find it hard to belive that two unrelated people came up with such similar designs totally independent of each other.  But, if they did happen to come up with it purely by coincidence once served the cease & desisit order they should have stopped using it.

    • Going to Florida for the usual February golf trip, and with our current weather, that date won't get here soon enough. Heading to Augusta GA for the Tuesday Master's practice round, will definitely get some golf in while I'm in the area for a few days. Hope to be able to catch up with @coachjimsc if he's around. Then it's back to Scotland first of July.  Playing 7 new courses, can't wait for that.  Then somewhere after that is the Rhode Island CC Member-Guest and then my normal October golf trip to Myrtle Beach.
    • It sucks to carry around a lot of water, but ideally it should be way more than we think.  I buy those gallon jugs of water and hang them from my pushcart when I walk. I agree with the electrolytes as well. You don't just sweat out water, but you lose electrolytes as well.
    • A 2010 study from the Journal of Strength & Conditioning Research compares the effects of different pre-round stretch routines for competitive golfers. Active Dynamic Warm-up: Swing Medicus driver, hit 3 shots each with selected clubs. Passive Static Stretches: Various athletic stretches such as hamstrings, chest stretch and reverse trunk twist. The subjects were collegiate golfers with a HDCP index of 5 or less who engaged regularly in strength and fitness routines. All golfers had two test days: one with active dynamic (AD) warmup, a second with AD followed by static stretches (SS). The results were then compared, within golfers and across golfers. For performance testing after the warmups, golfers hit three driver shots at time 0, 15, 30 and 45 minutes after the warmup. The study shows that static stretch formats produced poorer performance outcomes in the four measures shown in Table 5, which shows Time Zero results. The performance deficits under the PSS protocol decreased over time. Some suggestions on why the passive protocol was tied to lower performance than the active protocol: The passive stretches routine induced excessive range of motion,  basically producing wobbles in the golf swing. Other research indicates that the stretching produced slack in the tendons, lessening the amount of muscle force that could be transferred into the shot. One caveat: The study had good scientific controls and balancing of treatments (test routines). This was, however, an exploratory study and raises as many questions as it answers. Also, although the study was done back in 2010, it is still cited as a primary work in recent reviews. A quick online search did not reveal any follow-ups on the study. For those interested, the study PDF is below. PassiveStretchGOLF.pdf
    • I have trouble with vertigo on occasion, but have gotten nutritional and biofeedback tips to keep it at bay. Dehydration can help trigger v-like symptoms so one recommendation, along with maintaining overall hydration, is to start with 8 oz. of water early in the morning. A meta-analysis on Golf As Physical Activity indicated that golf is rated as a moderately intensive physical activity. This scientific literature review came from the University of Edinburgh. The physical activity level ties into hydration. A former university colleague was a marathon runner who had published a couple of articles on endurance training. He likewise said that golf was a moderate physical activity especially when the round stretched past  the two-hour mark. For hydration he recommended switching from water to electrolyte drink on the back nine (past two hour point of exercise) to prevent cramping. At the two-hour point of moderate activity, water starts flushing electrolytes out of the body, which can lead to fatigue and cramping. (I have had trouble with leg cramps in the past during exertion.) During a round, I start out with water on the front nine and switch to sports drink on the back nine. If the day is unusually hot, I may drink 8 oz. of Pedialite concentrate before going to the course. Maintaining overall hydration plus on-course boosters keeps me going.
    • Personally I’d try booking direct first - either via the Vidanta golf reservations number/email or through the resort concierge - especially for Christmas/New Year. Vidanta’s main courses (Greg Norman and Nicklaus designs) are popular and can book out fast this time of year, so direct often gives you the best shot at your preferred tee times.
