PGA Tour commissioner Jay Monahan announced on Thursday that the Tour would continue to host tournaments, but not allow fans to attend, beginning on Friday.

Can we get them to cancel the announcers, too?

I'm volunteering for the Valspar.  It's gonna be a quiet week!

You probably won’t be needed.

I thought about the volunteers.  They'll still need some of the normal crew, to work the range, scoring, maybe some on-course transportation, but the marshals surrounding the holes just won't be required.  I wonder if we'll see more lost balls, if we don't have marshals and fans looking for them.  I wonder if scores will go up a little, shots that are way offline won't get those nice trampled-down lies where the gallery normally walks.

Giggle giggle, good one.

Is that for the safety of the announcers... or for the safety of your ears/brain?

My bag is an ever-changing combination of clubs.

A mix I am forever tinkering with.

We were told that those of us, on fairway duty, will still be necessary.  They'll still need us to help with wayward shots, as well as, signaling that area is clear on blind tee shots.  Outside of that, the rest of us got some nice threads for everyday wear!

So instead of going to large, sporting events, people will crowd into bars to watch them.  Yeah, that’ll help.

That is cool that you still get to go, but I would love to watch them search for lost balls and play out of non trampled grass.

On the plus side, you'll get lots of time to watch the golfers without having those pesky spectators to pay attention to.  On the other, that sounds like it could become pretty boring. I did the hole marshal thing one year at Pinehurst, and it was the spectators that made the day interesting.  Be sure that they rotate you around to different locations so you get to see it from all angles.

Andy Johnson (thefriedegg) will love this. By “this” I mean no fans at a golf tournament. He is always clamoring for that on the podcast.

You normally get to pick one area and they may rotate you around that.  I'm assigned to hole #6 all week.  Tuesday, I'm on the green, Thursday is Left Fairway, Friday is crosswalk, and Sunday is right fairway.

We did it a little different, in that we rotated one "position" clockwise at about 30-minute intervals.  In a 6 or 7-hour shift, that meant we essentially worked all the way around the hole.  Oddly enough, we were on hole 6 as well.

Oh - the TV isn't that boring - usually just a bottle at home keeps me watching it.

1 - I don't know how ticket sales are apportioned.  Will this be a burden (lack of expected revenue) at the host venues?  Definitely a bust for the concessions support businesses....

2 - probably will be a better TV event....hard to tell

3 - pretty elite experience for the volunteers, this is the time to help out

4 - No more shouters....yay

    • Thanks but honestly… I don't know any other way. I don't mind being wrong so long as I know where to go from there. I don't like being wrong — I'd love to get things right (which is different than "being right"). I recommend grabbing a furniture slider or a paper plate or something, and doing something like this: First, make a swing where you let your trail foot swing out as you turn, then twist that foot back in. From DL and FO, it'll look like this: Then, during a regular backswing, try to twist your foot in slightly (demonstrated in the left image): You'll notice a crease along the trail side of your hip, your pelvis will "fold" into that thigh (internal rotation of the hip joint), and your "bits" will be squished a little between your pelvis and your thigh. Ben Hogan said once: "At the top of the back swing the groin muscle on the inside of your rt [sic] leg near your right nut will tighten," Hogan wrote. "This subtle feeling of tightness there tells you that you have made the correct move back from the ball." I don't know about that, but you will probably feel something down around that area.
    • Yep. I think it will start to feel even more athletic when we start on the downswing stuff later.  I know, it's just I want to be younger so I have more time to enjoy the changes. 🙂
    • I need to drop a couple of stone. 🙂 😛    Yep. Yeah, but in the end, it feels more athletic, like you're actually using your legs, yeah? As you know… we use the best available info we have. Like others, I was fooled a little by 2D images for awhile (moving or still). Unlike others, I've learned and grown and moved on since then, while they're still looking at their images (often from lousy camera angles).
    • Day 12 - 2025-12-31 Limited time today, and heavy rains here. 5-10 minutes of mirror work for full swing, working on trail side.
    • Day 2, 12/31/25.  Similar to yesterday (rainy, no surprise), I hit primarily 6-iron full swings with the same focus;  I also hit some chips (about 1/8 swing) with the 54.  About two dozen full swings and an equal number of short shots.  All of this was indoors, off a mat, into a net, real balls.
