The frustrating thing about this whole thing is the lack of data available

Agreed. The only thing comparable across countries/regions is the death rate and even that is affected by differences in attribution, population age, and so on.

The Financial Times has a good set of summary charts comparing the situation globally, updated regularly:

The FT analyses the scale of outbreaks and the number of deaths in countries...

Taiwan's aggressive efforts are paying off in fight against COVID-19

For those who might not know, Taiwan is not a part of the WHO due to international politics.

THat's the UK chart, which they just added. Doesn't look good for you, @Beastie:

Hospital Bed Shortage:
US: 36,000
UK: 85,000

ICU Bed Shortage:
US: 16,000
UK: 24,000

Population:
US: 330,000,000
UK: 66,000,000

PA looks to be "okay":

I don’t think the numbers are accurate for the UK. The NHS has a bed capacity about 130k and is adding 20-30k more in temporary hospitals as needed.  The main problem for the UK is lack of ventilators. We will be well short of them if cases rise like the website predicts.
I hope not

That interview where the WHO guy zipped his lip made me so angry. The measures shown in this piece, wow, Taiwan really did a job in clamping things down, they really learned from 2003.

Our courses here in Massachusetts are closed but yesterday I took a 7 iron and went down to the course I work at and played 2 balls.  Just did holes 2-8 twice.  No teeing it up, no putting into the cup.  I parked over with the grounds crew and walked up a side access road.  The cops come down to check the parking lot near the pro shop a couple times a day.

Saw one 2some out there... one guy on the left rough and the other one shanking it up the right side.  2 woman out with strollers and another woman walking a dog.

No any danger there

When this all kicked off in China I never really thought it would get so widespread, now my Mrs is in hospital for the last 3 days and has tested positive for this dreaded virus, my two kids and I have to self isolate for 14 days, I had to drop her to the hospital door and leave, she is showing some signs of improvement but won't be getting home yet. She is only 35.

So, guess I said it wrong.  I was just trying to emphasize how powerful this virus is.  It was around before the first human got it, and now there's no-telling how many million humans have it.

It will be around regardless of what humans do, not that that is a reason not to do the best we can.

As for Taiwan . . . "Early Action, Technology & Millions of Face Masks" . . . pretty much rules out the US's  Early Denial, No Testing and No PPE chances for a good outcome.

Okay, I think we’re on the same page. I didn’t want someone to think that efforts to control and contain weren’t worthwhile. (Not saying you said or thought that. Just wanted to clarify.)

So, GOLF MAY BE THE CURE!!!!

But really, prolonging it is the point of social distancing, etc., to avoid overtaxing medical resources too quickly.  When he says, "and I don’t see a good reason for a respiratory disease to stay in the population longer than necessary,” I think he's missing the point.  What he said there might be true, if morbidity and mortality were the same regardless of how many people are infected at any time.  But I don't think that's the case here.  If I understand correctly, mortality is correlating with how fast the peak is.  And not just for the elderly.  And prolonging also opens up more time for alternative treatments to be explored.  (Not immunization--I expect that will take too long to develop.)

How close are we to “overwhelming” the health care system?

Important to know. Plus it’s highly regional.

Not sure about that, the more that get it at one time the more hospitals are overwhelmed and the more lives are lost that might not necessarily have been lost. You cant completely isolate older and vulnerable people no matter how hard you try.

In theory what he is saying would work but unfortunately unless certain people are locked down so to speak they will not heed warnings to stay away from yhe elderly etc.

Thanks guys. She'll be fine, she just was one of the unlucky ones who got a more severe case. She's doing well in hospital, we are hoping to get her home in the next few days👍

I don’t disagree, but he is more of an expert in this than we are.

What if he’s right and we should have looser restrictions right now? What if kids should be in school?

I know.  Our numbers are slowly climbing every couple of days; we're still 18 cases for my 2-county area.  NYT shows we have case doubling of 9 days for one of my counties, 26 for another.  We're postponing some (not all) medical procedures to prevent spread.  I don't know if we're doing a great job and we're benefiting from the experience of other larger populations, or if it would be lower and slower here even if we were doing less.

I think Fauci made a statement about 2 weeks ago to the effect of "I hope people will say that we over-reacted when this is over."
