I'm always confused when I see "bogies." That's not how it's spelled.

https://www.usga.org/content/usga/home-page/rules/rules-2019/rules-of-golf/rules-and-interpretations.html#!ruletype=fr&section=rule&rulenum=21&subrulenum=3

There's even a section in the Rules of Golf (an alternate form of play) which talks about a scoring method called "Par/Bogey."

Everything online seems to indicate that "bogie" or "bogies" is far less common. This isn't a grey/gray thing, either.

I’m not surprised there are variations in spelling, acceptable or not. It’s a rare day when I don’t see incorrect spellings for more common words (I’m looking at you, its/it’s).

Despite knowing that it's bogey (or bogeys), I call them "buggers", as in "here is another bugger!"

I would say that generally, the only singular words that end in "ie" are French words such as patisserie and are pluralised in English by adding an s.

And... words that end in y are pluralised in English with ie: puppy and puppies.

Sooooo...it's fair to ask:

Why on earth would you spell bogey as "bogie"?

But.... the spelling of "bogeys" is bogeys not bogies. It is an exception.

People who never read do not pick up these nuances but it probably doesn't matter too much. :-)

Most probably - in fact, I think you're right! 😛

...which makes the "bogies" spelling even stranger! :-)
