According to a report from Sports Illustrated, McIlroy's absence from the designated event in Hilton Head Island, S.C., will incur a $3 million fine. (He has not provided a reason for his withdrawal). SI, citing a source close to the situation, reported the money will be deducted from the money he made from the Player Impact Program (PIP) last season.

This is what the players agreed to. The RBC was a designated event.

This is the bottom line.  The players made this call and the associated consequences of missing the tournament.

I don't know if it's a fine so much as he won't get the full allotment from the PIP.

$3M to Rory might be like $3k to someone with a normal job, and many of us would have paid $3k not to have to do something we really don't want to do.

But, it is interesting that it was Rory who did this.

Yea that’s the kicker. He’s been the most vocal about the changes and kind of the ambassador for the PGA Tour. It’s a bad look.

Unless he had something serious come up, even if he is playing horrible, just go out there and battle through it.

I like Rory, but just because you do not feel like it sometimes not a good enough excuse when you are in the position he is in.

He probably made the conscious choice to do it an except the penalty. He should really just state that to clear the air.

It is not hard to imagine a mini burnout from the raging buildup and the soul draining humiliation at the Masters. One can redline on firing all cylinders only for so long especially if they hit a huge 'pothole'.

I think it was simply a business decision.  I'm sure he knew exactly what the consequence was.  And I've not seen him complaining about it.

What I do not get is why in 2024 will the players not be required to play in the designated events to get the PIP money.  I know it is getting cut in half so maybe they figure the prize money in the events will be enough to encourage participation.

As for Rory & $3 mill, I agree that is may be a simple business decision.
