A 2 iron is 18 deg a one can be 18 bent strong or 16 deg. It makes no difference if your Ben Hogan or just the average Joe playing long irons only has marginal advantages compared to 5 woods and hybrids in fact it's almost non existent! Unless your a super high speed player who needs a club for the British open to tee off with on certain holes then woods are simply better it's a fact. A 1 iron is basically a shorter stiffer 15 deg 3 wood.

2 iron. Dont use hybirds and I'm old school with the reasons why! I believe that hybirds are for average ball strikers. Spent alot of time on the range to learn to use long irons.

PGA Tour Pros use hybrids and they are better than average ball strikers, soooooooooooo........

4i, added a lob wedge and had to take out the 3i. I have a 3 hybrid that is easier to hit and goes farther than my 3i, so I don't miss it. 4i is for lower trajectory, punch, and big wind days.

edit to let you know my 4i is 23*

Started off this season at 6i and am now at 4i

I've been really mulling over this part of my bag lately. Two years ago when I started and had a shitty swing, I was all about hybrids and carried various 3-4-5 hybrids (sometimes replacing the 3 with a 5w). As my iron swing has improved (a big reason being my MySwing Thread...thanks guys) my higher lofted hybrids began to hook BADLY and especially off the tee for some reason (4h is cobra s3 max and 5h WAS callaway Diablo Edge). I got an AP1 5i off Ebay for $6.50 and the thing is a total beast (its also stiff and my other irons are regular so that might be a factor) I then decided to go one step further and got an RBZ 4i (20 degrees) and try it out. I've only hit it on the range but it seems to go a tad further than 4i on good hits but MUCH less consistent off ground. Off the tee though, the 4i is absolute money so I'm gonna keep it for now as a driving iron. The problem is, my 4h although hookish off the tee is pretty solid in bad lies and when I'm 185 out.

I'm playing this sunday at course with a few short tight par 4s and long par 3s where the 4i could definitely be used. To make room, I'm taking out my gap wedge. For my handicap I'm pretty decent with partial wedge swings so I'm not too worried about that but still feel weird carrying D, 3W, 3H, 4i (20*)-4H(23*) at the top end.

It is glad to see that I'm not alone in tinkering with this area of the bag though...thanks guys!

I was just wondering, what we were all carrying as our longest iron and why? I'll start, right now its 4i, but I have both 4i and 4h in the bag, at least until I get my wedges (50°, 54°, and 58°) then it will be 5i...

Nope. Still 4-iron even with 50°, 54°, and 58°.

I go with one of 4 set-ups now.

70% D, 4w, 3h, 4i-9i, PW, AW, 54°, 58°, Putter.

15% D, 4w, 7w, 4i-9i, PW, AW, 54°, 58°, Putter

10% D, 4w, Lumpy, 4i-9i, PW, AW, 54°, 58°, Putter

3% D, 4w, 3i-9i, PW, AW, 54°, 58°, Putter

2% Speed Golf set up. D, lumpy, 6i, 9i, 56°, Putter.

4i - still hit it well, it's my 190 stick and playing in the wind as much as I do, it's pretty useful for flighted shots.

My bud just went with a 4h and is crushing it so I'm considering transitioning.

5i.   I like my 4i, but the hybrid I replaced it with hits better out of light rough.  And it's more forgiving in the fairway if you fat it just a little bit.

Normally a 4 iron but I have a 1 iron in the bag right now on windy days. I hit it well and it rolls forever off the tee. As soon as the grass turns green I'll probably shelve it.

I've carried a 2-iron since my first set of irons (Ping ISI's) in the late-90's.  I fell in love with that club off the tee on short par 4's, and demanding driving holes.  I was never able to find a hybrid that wasn't a hook machine for me, so I continued to carry a 2-iron, even as I changed clubs/OEM's over the years.  I finally found a hybrid last year, a Titleist 915 Hd 3 hybrid with a Tour AD-DI shaft, that has become my favorite club in the bag.  However, I still carry a 2-iron since I can control trajectory and spin better with that club than a hybrid.  The top of my bag looks like this:

Titleist 690 CB 2-iron w/ DG X-100

Titleist 915 Hd 3 hybrid w/ Tour AD-DI Stiff flex

Titleist 714 CB 4-iron w/ KBS C-Taper Lite Stiff flex

The longest iron I use normally is my 4 but I carry the 3.  I tend to have a frequent need to punch out from under trees.  If I want it straight on the ground, I use my 4w.  If I have a few feet of clearance and I need to try to slice or hook it, the 3i.

4 iron. Need something to punch out from the trees, right? And maybe the occasional par 3.

My lowest is a 4I. I use it only for punch shots that need to go somewhere, however it only gets used once every 4 or 5 rounds. Knock on wood.

@Mike Boatright, your answer makes absolutely no sense whatsoever... It doesn't answer the question at all...

4i for me. From the fairway, at the right yardage, it's my longest iron. Anything needed longer than my 4i, then my metal woods suffice.

A whole bunch of Tour Edge golf stuff......

    • Thanks for the feedback. @StuM, we are a "club without real estate" so no facilities or pro. We have a membership of around 185 players and we only play together as a group at our tournaments, which are held at public access courses. A group of us setup the tournaments, collect the money and dole out the prizes.
    • In general, granting free relief anywhere on the course isn't recommended.  Similarly, when marking GUR, the VSGA and MAPGA generally don't mark areas that are well away from the intended playing lines, no matter how poor the conditions.  If you hit it far enough offline, you don't necessarily deserve free relief.  And you don't have to damage clubs, take unplayable relief, take the stroke, and drop the ball in a better spot.
    • If it's not broken don't fix it. If you want to add grooves to it just because of looks that's your choice of course. Grooves are cut into putter faces to reduce skid, the roll faced putter is designed to do the same thing. I'm no expert but it seems counter productive to add grooves to the roll face. Maybe you can have it sand-blasted or something to clean up the face. Take a look at Tigers putter, its beat to hell but he still uses it.
    • I get trying to limit relief to the fairway, but how many roots do you typically find in the fairway? Our local rule allows for relief from roots & rocks anywhere on the course (that is in play). My home course has quite a few 100 year old oaks that separate the fairways. Lift and move the ball no closer to the hole. None of us want to damage clubs.
    • Hello, I've been playing a Teardrop td17 F.C. putter for many years and love it. It still putts and feels as good or  better than any of the new putters I've tried and it's in excellent condition except the face has dings in it ever since I bought it used that kind of bother me. I was just wondering if it's possible to have some really shallow horizontal grooves milled into the face on a "roll face" putter. I think I would rather spend some money on it instead of trying to get used to a new putter.  Thanks
