But but but...that can't be true. My irons are forged by Chuck Norris in the magma of earth's core then they are alpha maraged in a heat so intense it can only be achieved by dousing the iron heads in the surface of the sun. This process creates a surface that is so hard it literally scares the golf ball off the ground and forces it towards the hole. It's called "brimstone processing"! :P

I love you.

It's in your head. Start hitting it 100 yards easy weezy. Then add 10 yards to it, easy weezy, then add 10 more yards, easy weezy. You'll get there. You just need to rebuild your confidence in the club and leave your ego in your car when you play golf.

Easy, practice!!! I am 14 years old and I hit my 7 iorn 170 yards. My handicap is a 3.7! You know why? Because i have been playing for 11 years and i practice almost everyday. I put my blood sweat and tears in to my pasion, GOLF! My average scare is 65-75 on 18 and i play on the mens tee. Golf is a hard sport and i love it! Just practice and you will see improvement. Practice makes perfect! My skill is a blessing from God:)

From 1975 to 1980, the 7 iron had a loft of 40 degrees.

From 1980 to 1995,  "    "   "      "     "   "   "  36      "

From 1995 to today,  "    "   "    has  "    "  "  33-34 degrees.

The shafts of irons are also half an inch longer today than in the 1980s.

So really, the current 7 iron is equivalent to Jack Nicklaus's 5 iron !

Okay, so what I'm about to say really happened.

I was in a scramble a few years ago with a guy who couldn't hit the ball very far with his woods (my gf was outdriving him no problem - if only she wasn't such a *****, but I digress) but he could hit his irons okay - total arm swing. So we get to the final hole which was a 150 yard par 3. He tries to pull out his 3 iron and I suggested he might want to go with a 7 to just keep it in play. He counters with the 5-iron. His wife convinces him that I might know what I'm talking about and he uses a 7-iron. He sort skulls / tops the ball and it rolls and bounces like a SOB to about 10 paces short of the green. He looks over at me with a smug look and shakes his head, "I knew it was a 5-iron". I guess it was buddy - my bad.

The last couple pages of this thread have some great posts, including these three.  Good stuff, fellas.  "I knew it was a 5-iron."  LOL!

I hit my Hogan 9 iron 150. Of course, it is bent to 34 with a 37" shaft. If any of my 7 irons go 170, someone else hit them. I did throw a 7 iron about 160 once, after I had tried to hit the ball 150 with it.

Seeing this thread again, it occurs to me that a 170-yard 7-iron isn't all that incredible.  It's far, no doubt, but it's not other-worldly.  When I'm swinging really well, my 7i goes in the 160 range.  I'm not a short hitter, but also not a long hitter (especially with my irons).  My driver/3w tend to go a good distance, but normally folks who can drive it as far as I can tend to hit their irons 1-2 clubs further than me since I still have a pronounced flip at impact.

Anyway, my point is, I can hit a 7i 160 sometimes (no wind, flat landing area, carry distance), and I've played with guys who can hit their irons further than me often.  Full disclosure: pros apparently average 172 carry with their 7i according to some trackman data from 2010.  So it's obviously a significant distance.

no, no I meant it as a mental block, if you think your hitting 5 iron then you will hit the 7 further.............ok you got me I reversed the numbers

Anyone can hit it 170 yards with a 7 iron. Eventually.

"The expert golfer has maximum time to make minimal compensations. The poorer player has minimal time to make maximum compensations." - And no, I'm not Mac. Please do not PM me about it. I just think he is a crazy MFer and we could all use a little more crazy sometimes.

Who cares. If you cant hit your 7 iron 170 then grab your 6.

Sadly, I'd still come up short with a 6.

For some of us who don't hit the "average" distances, it's less of an ego thing and more a question of could we with the right mechanics.

    • 70 today. The number looks good but, the course is a par 67 (5,110 yards, 64.3/115.). While the 70 took quite a few good shots to achieve, I am not counting that as shooting my age.
    • Played our town’s executive course this morning. Everything is closing but for now Huron Hills remains open. #13 is shaped like an upside down backwards L (dogleg left). Only 231 yard par 4. Dogleg has a tree guarding the corner and a sand bunker guards the green for those cutting the dogleg. Tiny green. About 10 years ago or more I would try to cut the dogleg. The hole is so short that even if one tangled with the tree or was bunkered, par was likely and birdie was still on the table. Now in my 70’s, I just hit it straight and try to wedge it close for birdie. Today I screwed up and pulled my drive. I wandered around a bit when my ball was not in the bunker. Finally located it on the approach to the green. Almost chipped in and tapped in the 2 inches for birdie. Best unintentional shot of the week. 😲

    • Why wouldn't it have? It's not like you were playing it as a 145yd par 5 and made a 2 or something.  Or not like it was playing 50yds to a temporary green or something either.
