My first time every shooting under par, I was 15 and playing with a friend who quit after the front 9. I shot par and I wanted to keep going so I headed out on the back alone. The 12th hole I caught up to an older man who was also playing solo and he asked if I just wanted to join him and I did. We're playing, and at about the same time I realize I have a legit chance to shoot in the 60s, he tells me he is on course to shoot his age (72) for the first time. We both bogied the last hole, me for a 68 and him for a 72. Very impressive and really cool to share a milestone like that with someone.

One of my life goals in golf for sure, only 21 so yeah not gonna happen just yet. My grandfather has been close, shot 81 when he was 78.

Fore!

We have a short 9-hole course here, which is a par33. Did a Par-round last monday, first time I shot under my age (36)

Last time I was out I was shooting pretty close to my age after just 3-4 holes (23)

Maybe when I hit my 80's or 70's (maybe 60's !!) I'll be there

Cheers,

I would be happy to shoot my age over par! I thought I would do it this year but I haven't been able to play as much as I expected to.

  • 8 years later...

Shooting my age was what I thought was an unattainable goal for me because despite playing a lot (scratch) when in HS and College in my adult life (e.g.the past 40+ years), golf was an on/off activity. Some years, I might play 20 rounds and others 0-4. Not conducive to a low index or consistent play but thanks to muscle memory, I was usually able to play well enough to keep my interest.

2 years ago and in anticipation of retirement,I started playing my local municipal course. I had lived less than 2 miles from this very nice muni for 16 years and and only played there 3 times. I joined the men's club and started playing 2-3 times a week, Initial index was 9 and that quickly dropped to 6 in the first few months. New clubs and a bit of practice and I was a solid 6 with a goal of 4-5 index.

Two weeks ago while playing a relatively short (6K yds) but very challenging par 70 mountain course with big elevation changes and no flat lies I did it. I had a solid 36 one bogie front nine but on the back it all came together, I hit every green in reg and had makeable birdie putts on each hole. I made 3 of the tougher ones and followed that up with an eagle chipin on the par 5 16th. Missed very makeable birdie putts on 17 and 18 for a 5 under 30 back nine and a 66 (one under my age!). As my son said it's kind of an epic achievement for a life long golfer.

BTW, this round dropped my index to 4.3 and so for the time being, net tournaments are out ... ;-)

I will shoot my age should I live long enough. I am 76 now, and best score past two years was 78 (prolly a fluke). My current average raw score is around 95.

I would need to live another 9-11 years to shoot my age. That's doable, I hope.

Thehard part is going to be keeping my current game, scoring level for that long.

Of course there's that handicap thing,............

Yup...and the yardage lost, coordination, and a myriad of other things, seems to grow exponentially. I have lost over 40 yards through the bag in the past 18 months. OTOH, I have gained a lot in the short game.

My father first did it at the age of 68. Since then he has done it too many times to count. He's 77 now so he does it pretty much every time he tees it up. Although all that golf has taken its toll, he's been laid up after back surgery for the last 8 months. He's going crazy because the doctor won't release him.

I'm going to be 66 in less than a month, so this is the time in life when strokes don't disappear, they appear! I'm under no illusions about shooting my age, but I still enjoy the game and will as long as I can play!
