Does anyone here switch to womens balls when it is cold out?

Well the temp here is dropping and a few weeks ago i played in 40 degree weather.it has been nice lately but the temp is dropping fast. I normally play the prov1x, tp red, and just started with the penta. I noticed that i had to club up between 1 and 1.5 clubs for all of my mid iron shots. My buddy gave me a womens ball to play with and i only lost about a half a club length over my original distances, So now i am considering going out and buying a couple dozen womens balls. Has anyone else done this?

I generally play with orange balls. In colder weather, a white ball is too hard to track against a gray or cloudy-white sky.

Precept Laddie is the most underrated ball out there. Love that ball. They are 24 for $19.99 at The Golf Warehouse website I think. I also saw the Srixon Soft Feel on sale for $14.99/dozen. Either would make a perfect winter ball. Hell, they are just good balls period. The laddie was born when Precept found that men were playing the Precept lady. Just a name change from what I recall to the "laddie". How convenient. Ha ha... Great balls though. Same for the Srixon soft feels. Especially at $15/dozen.

There was a discussion on another site about this just the other day. Some where, (I think it was the guys at Maltby but I don't remember for sure) they did some launch monitor testing. The balls came off the clubface at the same speed regardless of what temperature the balls were. The conclusions sere that the reduced distance to cold weather shots is because the cold air is more dense and that slows down the ball more rapidly. It prompted a heated discussion from guys who "knew from experience" this and that, but the physics of the conclusion were sound.
At least to me.
And so I'm not completely off topic, No I use the same balls regardless of the weather.

I would believe the idea that it's the denser air that cuts down on ball flight ... I already play a 'soft' ball (Noodle Easy Distance), so going to a woman's ball I don't think would make much difference in my game.

I have been sneaking softer balls in my game but I can still tell the difference btw them and prov1 and the prov1 s still out playing them.

Same here. I actually go from the B330-RX to the e6, but that's not much of a change really. I might try a yellow ball this winter though.

Yes. I've never understood why ppl would play tour quality balls in the winter with all of the ball plugging and the greens are all soft and receptive. So what is the point?

I play Percept Lady ball in the winter, although for me, I've found the Bridgestone e6+ to be the best winter ball. I get the same distances with it during the winter that I get with my Niki tours during the summer.

I'd be interested in reading this, please post a link if you can find it. I have always felt that the effect of temperature on ball-speed was negligible, but I think most people do experience a distance loss in cold weather. I believe that low temperatures have more of an effect on swing speed than ball speed.

Even in warm weather I require a bit of pre-round stretching to make my normal shoulder turn... and I'm in my twenties. The colder it is, the more time I need to get warmed up and stay loose for a round. I think that many golfers don't take the time to warm up in colder weather and don't even notice that they are taking an abbreviated swing due to decreased flexibility. I would not be surprised if some golfers lose 10-15 MPH of clubhead speed because of this. If this is the case for the original poster, it would explain why you saw less of a distance loss with a two piece than with a three or four piece ball. Your slower swing isn't allowing you to compress the ball like you do in warmer weather. To answer the title question of the thread, I usually switch from tour balls to the Nike PD Soft in the winter. Mostly because I can't stand losing expensive balls (and valuable daylight) to fallen leaves 5 yards off the fairway. But, also because it feels like hitting a marshmallow, which is nice on cold weather mis-hits.

The other day I found a Pinnacle Ribbon on the 5th hole, and teed off with it on 6. I was impressed with the feel and distance I got from this ball. I continued to play it throughout the round with good results. Now I am thinking of buying a box. They do come in white, as I do not wish to suffer ribbing from my partners. I had a question if it was even within the rules of golf for a male to play a ball designed for women. The ball did act hot on the green, so I would have to compensate there.

It's perfectly legal for a man to use a woman's ball, just as the opposite is true too. In fact, there are some balls (Bridgestone e6, for example) that work great for both males and females.

If you can't find them in white, remember that there are players on tour using a yellow ball. Jim Furyk made an ace at Augusta with one this year.

I used to do that but don't think I will any more. Today it was 32F and I started off with a Mojo ball because I thought it was softer and would give me more distance. I lost that ball in the weeds on the 12th hole and pulled out a ProV. I actually hit the ProV a little farther than I was hitting the Mojo. In fact, I couldn't tell much difference in my distance today with that same ProV than I did last week when it was in the 50s. I think what little distance I lost was because I was wearing a lot more clothes and that restricted my swing. I've only found one ball that goes a lot farther for me than a ProV. The other day a guy gave me a John Daly ball and asked me to try it. That thing really went long. I hated it though because I couldn't spin it back to save my life. It would hit the greens and bounce off the back. That thing was so long though it had me wondering if it was even legal.
