It's ridiculous really. I never hear commentators going on about Dustin Johnson or Nick Watney and their final rounds at majors last year. It's been blown completely out of proportion tbh

Watney, true, but I've heard a lot of stuff about Johnson's meltdowns.

Rorys got this one in the bag, we already have the US open winner. I dont see him doing what he did at the masters, you only do that sort of thing once, hes got something to prove now and hes a professional

? thats because Watney or DJ aren't leading at the minute and Rory is. What are they supposed to talk about? Instead of talking of what the leader has done previously they should say 'Rory's leading by 8 but remember about Watney and Johnson last year'. If it was one of those two in Rory's position then their situation would get spoken about.

It's fun and light-hearted. If anything, it might give some players advantages - playing with your brother might be a good situation for the Molinari pair, for example.

Lighten up, people. :-P

So this year the DH group was Sabbattini, Allenby and Ryan Moore. The other two are certain starters did Ryan Moore deserve it or if not he is now guilty by association.

Rory / Jason Day quinella. Go lads.

Rory already has almost done this twice. He lead big after thursday at the Open Championship last year. His blowup just came a few days earlier. Also, if that's only something you do once, Dustin Johnson and Greg Norman would like their trophies. That said, I think Rory pulls this one out.

Wow you are a negative person. Some of your posts that I read are so assuming and opinionated. Why would you ever wish for a train wreck? So it is better viewing for you? That attitude sucks mate.

Again, I'm not assuming anything. I'm certain Rory is going to pull it off tomorrow, and hopefully it will be the start of something much greater than this tournament alone. Is this a wonderful story for Rory McIlroy, and the game of golf itself? Yes. But runaway victories are extremely boring. There's little entertainment to be found in a professional golfer playing a round with no human competition to speak of. The only thing at stake is whether he breaks the US Open scoring record, and he doesn't need a particularly spectacular round (a 72) to break that. An 18-hole coronation lacks drama; I won't be missing much if I don't watch it all day.

I guess I'll root for the meltdown just to be the bad guy in this thread .

In all seriousness though, I was pretty confident that he was going to implode at the Masters.  This time I'm pretty confident he won't.  Even if he did, his lead is so big he'd probably still win.

Anyway, I'm glad I scheduled a round of golf a few weeks ago for this Father's day... there won't be much drama tomorrow.

Well, that was only a couple months ago and a very similar situation, so comparisons make sense. Let him finish this out and then give it a year, then his last round at the Masters will hopefully fade into trivia. Lots of people blow big leads, I think those memories only persist strongly if they do it more than once in a short amount of time. It looks like McIlroy has it in the bag, and I hope he wins it. If for some bizarre reason he didn't, he would never hear the end of it. Not sure what happened to Phil. He had a fighting chance at top 5, or at least top 10, but that died with six over on the back 9 today. I'm still holding out for a -18 charge by Stricker. :-D

You're right; Phil was "unlucky" but Rory "felt invincible" even though their end result was the same.

I wonder who you're supporting...

If you watch the post-match interview with Rory he even says it was a little more left than he wanted it to be as he aimed at the front right of the green but got a bit of grass between the club and ball and it turned over more than he wanted; it wasn't a "gamble" or him feeling "invincible".

Phil had no choice, he had to hit between trees. Rory aimed at a pin tucked behind watery from a long way away when he has an alternative option available. It's obvious, one played the shot they had, the other chose a difficult shot. [edi]It was a gamble, he was hitting from the rough, and going for a tight shot like that from that kind of lie is definitely somewhat of a gamble. I'm not saying Rory was dumb, but both players had the same result. One was forced into it, the other took a risk.[/edit]
You clearly know more about Rory's golf than he does. He says he aimed front right but turned over too much as he had grass between club and ball but you know better and he deliberately aimed left.
Apologies are in order: I read your last post as "front left", not "front right". No wonder it made no sense... Sorry. I didn't hear his post-round interview, so until now I thought he'd hit on the line he'd aimed for. If he did aim right, well, two players got unlucky circumstances on that hole.

How many records has Rory broken so far?

>Lowest 36 holes at US Open in relation to par (11 under)

>Lowest 36 holes aggregate (131)

>Lowest 54 holes in relation to par (14 under)

>Lowest 54 hole aggregate (199)

>Lowest under par at a US Open at any point during the tournament (14 under)

Missing any?

Yep: Quickest to get to double digits under par (26 holes, I believe).

    • To flog this subject even further, if that's even possible, this article from Golf Monthly just appeared today in one of my news feeds. Written by a golf writer in the UK who I never heard of, he's basically saying that there should be only 3-5 rounds from the most recent 20 that should count towards the average and only competitive rounds should count. He claims the erratic scorers would have less of an advantage than they do now. He makes a lot of references to "club golfers" in the UK being the ones who are mostly dissatisfied. https://share.google/qmZZBEoJvOxHxJGil  In my experience with my league where we have golfers with indexes ranging from 5 to 40, looking at the weekly results from the past two years, I can detect no pattern that would substantiate the claim that the current system gives an unfair advantage to either erratic golfers (aren't we all?) or higher handicappers. Apparently though, at least in the UK, this seems to be "a thing."
