God she looks so terribly upset in that video after missing the putt. Poor thing, cute though!

Apparently, they haven't read Dick Stockton's book, "Unconscious Putting."

I read it more for pre shot routine and what he does when he is over the ball, rather than technique. But he says, "don't vary from your routine" and that routine should not involve standing still over the ball ... always move a little - look at target, look in front of ball (for Stockton), GO.

I too that same approach to full shots and began a waggle, which I've never done. Look at target while waggling ... eyes to ball ... GO.

It helps.

DAVE Stockton.  Dick Stockton probably wouldn't be a good source to improve your putting... Your announcing, maybe, but not putting.

For a putt that mattered or counted for anything? Never. I bet a lot of people could say the same thing.

Goofing around on the practice green? Sure. It was only a foot. Usually when someone misses something like this (Doug Sanders was 27 inches) people exaggerate how short it was. They're not exaggerating how short this one was. It was three cups away or less.

True. I have always thought that Sanders was unfairly maligned there. That putt of his was no gimmee.

Errrrrghhhhhhh.

And you're a sexist, patronising and chauvinistic "thing".

But I guess being cute makes up for being a professional athlete that has just made a tragic mistake. She sure is a lucky thing.

And probably totally wrong.  But I would love to hear why you think there is only 1 black golfer in the top 25 on the PGA most weeks.

Keep it simple. I bet they get more girls out for golf (less soccer, basketball, and volleyball) and get them into better training systems. See Russian tennis in the 90s for an example of how this can work in woman's sports. Golf (and woman's golf in particular) draws from a very small talent pool. How many kids take up golf at 12 or so whose parents are not pretty serious players? Compare that to the number of kids that sign up for little league whose parents haven't touched a ball in 30 years. The first tee program is changing this to some extent but golf is still a tough sell. And finally the money for us players just isn't there. #50 make 177k last year in prize money.  If she made that in endorsements (seems high but I dont know) you are looking at about 350k which sounds like a lot. But after paying caddies, coaches, travel and the rest it isn't the clear slam dunk that making 2 million dollars+endorsements is for the pga pro. The koreans are much bigger fish  in their market so getting sponsership dollars a lot more likely.

And finally it isn't really asia. It is south korea (45 players 2009 numbers). There are more swedes than Taiwan (obviously one big name there) and japan put together.

Or, better yet, we could stick to the topic (not men's golf).

Man!  I had the same reaction the people in the stands did after seeing that... my heart broke watching it and just cannot imagine how she felt.

That was hard to watch, I felt bad for her.

Someone should tell her about hitting short putts softer so that she can increase the capture width. It seemed to have alot of speed.

Anyways, says something about her that she could stand there and do that interview after missing that putt and losing in the playoff. I am pretty certain I would not be doing an interview.

Yes. That was really impressive.

Did anyone see the interview with Michelle Wie the other day with Kelly Tilghman?

Here is an "English as a first language" player who is so inarticulate it's embarrassing.

What a contrast!

Seemed to me while watching the coverage that she kind of "in betweened" it...she didn't take her full routine to read, make the practice strokes, etc, and she didn't just walk up and knock it in either.  I've done this type of thing before.  It's an uncomfortable feeling when it happens, but it's sometimes hard to stop once you've started the process.  You don't want to step off a 1 foot putt to re-gather yourself, and end up kind of rushing things.

I'm sure in the back of her mind there was a thought that she should line it up, make her full routine, etc and she just didn't stay down through the entire putt.  Either way, it's just a tragedy for her.  I felt sick in my stomach after the playoff.  She played so well, I hope she can overcome this.

Cuz he thinks she's cute?

Dude. Decaf.

Is this worse than Van de Veldt blowing the British Open?

I'd vote no, as it was a single, albeit huge, mistake, whereas VdV made several ridiculous decisions in his melt-down, any one of which, had he decided differently, would have given him the win.

But then again, what the hell do I know?

There's a difference between thinking someone is cute and writing "Poor thing, cute though!"
Odd that I have to point this out on a forum where there seems to be a feeling that Augusta might benefit from becoming a bit more progressive.

Maybe so, but not as big a difference as writing it versus saying it to her right after it happened.  If he was there, and immediately patted her on her head and said it to her, then I would agree that it would come across as patronizing and sexist.  In this context, though, it just comes across as compassion and attraction.

Agree with zip here ... lighten up.

    • Is it? I bought the Stack radar to replace my PRGR based on what Stack told me! When I am swinging for speed, the PRGR would miss 50%-80% of my backswings due to a higher speed. The stack seldom misses those- at least for me.
    • As an analyst by nature, I would like to compare the scores under both systems. It is something we can easily do if we have the data. I actually thought the new system was less fair to those whose game was on the decline - like mine! Old: Best 10 of last 20 scores with the .96 multiplier. Course handicap excluded course rating and overall par. New: Best 8/20. Course handicap includes course rating -par. My understanding is Stableford caps scores at Net double bogey like stroke play. If so, handicap should be slower to rise because you are only using 8 versus 10 scores. If I am missing something, I am curious enough to  want to understand what that may be. My home course tees that I play are 72.1/154 now. My best score out here is 82. When my game started to decline, my handicap didn’t budge for 13 rounds because of good scores in my first 8! I know I am an anomaly but my handicap has increased almost 80% in the past few years (with only a few rounds this year). For a few months I knew I was losing every bet because my game was nowhere near my handicap. I suspect I have steamrolled a few nuances but that shouldn’t matter much. When I have modeled this with someone playing the same tees and course, one good round, or return to form, will immediately reduce the handicap by some amount.
