Like I said previously, I think this is just a case where the guy's perceived attitude and "reputation" trump the notion that his intentions were merely congratulatory. I really don't care either way. I think he's a hell of a caddie, but yes I also think he's a tool and I laughed at how quick he ran in there. I definitely didn't lose any sleep over it or give it a second thought thereafter though.

In reality, I don't know the guy personally so what I posted a few posts up this page is just what I think the "majority" of people think about Stevie.

Does anyone here have a history as being a caddie in major tournaments?  I'd like to hear from that perspective.  Seems that the caddie is the sole companion to the player for 72 (74 holes).  The only one allowed to give advice, the one person the player talks to for anything serious during the competition, etc etc etc.  I think that perspective would be pretty valuable in making these assessments.  (I'm not talking about a local course kid that just carries the clubs, PGA caddie perspective.)

(So what did the guy do previously?  Not attitudes, perceptions, what were the 'actions'.....?)

My sentiments exactly.

“He was my eyes on that putt,” Scott said. “It was really dark, and he's seen a lot of putts at this golf course; somewhere he might have been able to recall that one.”

Said Williams, who during his career was on the bag for three of Woods' four Masters wins: “We knew it was a right-to-left putt. He said he thought it was a cup outside, but I told him it broke more than he thought and it was two cups outside the hole.”

Sounds like SW does deserve some credit for this win.  Scott is a pretty good guy to share the spotlight and give credit where he felt it was due.

If you watched the playoff birdie putt on 2. It was clear SW was being firm in his advice to AS. I applaud SW and AS for correctly reading the putt and sinking it considering the magnitude of the moment. With that being said.... SW is still a d-bag.

A player who wins the Masters asking his caddy for help with the winning putt because it’s too dark to see the line? And… Imagine Stevie’s excitement if in fact his advice resulted in Adam Scott’s successful and winning putt.

The image of Stevie (with an enormous grin) running towards AS after the winning putt will live a very long time.

Adam Scott is popular. Stevie is not popular, and in fact is disliked. Adam Scott is not likely to switch his caddy after winning a Major. The best solution is spending $$’s on an agency to improve Stevie’s image (or simply hide Stevie), which in turn protects Adam’s image. You need a good image to receive and keep endorsements.

Congrats Steve major number 14, or is it 15? 13 with Tiger, anything with Norman or Floyd?

Some people just going to hate!

He is a strong willed Kiwi, get over it, he didn't get brought up in a litigation sensitive world of smarmy political correctness.

His boss was obviously happy with the job he did, why should his conduct so upset the narrow minded?

Just reviewed Williams' career.  I can't find a single professional golf tournament that he won, let alone a major.

Show up, keep up, shut up......

A bit of a stretch to call me narrow-minded just cuz I think he's a douchenozzle.

He's an effin' caddy. Most of the world (even those you would label narrow minded) understand they are to be in the background, doing their job. The pro's the star. They're the hired help.

It wouldn't be an issue if we all didn't know what a d*ck Stevie Williams is.

Steve would probably have pouted for the rest of the summer had he not received the kudos he felt he deserved.

I cannot say I ever remember seeing Steve Williams name engraved in any major championship trophies?

I have no doubt he is good at his job, he has worked for some of the biggest names on Tour. But then again there are many caddies out there who work for Tour stars yet still conduct themselves as gentlemen and don't come off as total pricks. Bones Mackay, Fluff Cowan, and JP Fitzgerald to name a few. Not sure what your point is with the narrow minded comment, but his conduct doesn't upset me, he just rubs me the wrong way.

Whatever happened to the days when caddies stood at the side of the green & in the background?

Seriously? The caddy is usually the first person to congratulate the player regardless....yes, Stevie is a tool, but his celebration with Adam on Sunday was no different to 99% of other caddies out there

sigh

seems to me that caddy has a big role in wins/loses......might even be the difference....ask Joe LaCava about that.

I can't stand SW but if Scott said he gave him the right read then that's pretty big given it was the winning putt.  On a different note, I guess Scott forgave SW for selling him on the wrong club for his approach shot that ended up short of the green on the same hole.
