Call me crazy but I like Furyk's chances. Grew up in the area, solid (although disappointing last couple of holes) at last year's US Open and a game that is suitable for this style of course. 9 consecutive cuts made including a T3 in Texas and T7 in Tampa Bay. I bet $10 on him at 40-1 odds.

I'm for the Spaniard, and i don't mean Sergio.  The old man, Jimenez, plays great on short courses so he has a good shot.  If he is entered.

For folks not from the area who may have been watching weather forecasts, while we had a ton of rain this past Friday it was dry the past two days and the course looks sensational already. Small chance of stray thundershowers during the week, but also a chance it stays dry which would be fantastic.

Getting ready for the world to descend upon Haverford Twp.

Eric, awesome photos in the thread starter. Thanks for placing my favorite short par 4 up top. That is one fantastic golf hole.

Trust me, if the course is dry most of the the greens will not hold balls hit from the rough. Not if those approach shots fly to the green. A few greens might hold short irons that hit in front, but don't be shocked that balls played from the rough turn quite easily into bogeys. All of this assumes a dry course.

If the course gets wet the pros may kill it, but if its dry the pros will be surprised how defensive they must play.

As far as the open goes ... I don't care if they have to hit driver 4 times or 14 (making them hit driver on a par 3 is a joke, IMO), as long as the course doesn't play like the bob hope classic, and keeps people fighting for pars ill enjoy it.

Golfingdad, the pros will not be hitting driver at any of the par 3's at Merion. #9 and #17 are long, but they play downhill. The average pro can reach with a long iron. #3 requires the longest club to reach, but still a hybrid or fairway metal at most for this field of players.

I'm preparing to be working in the rain some tomorrow. The good thing is that it is supposed to be clear Wednesday through Sunday.

I will be interested to see a bit of that group between shots as I always think that Stewart Cink seems quite jovial on course as does Harrington and occasionally Garcia but Padraig and Garcia are far from buddies so could be an awkward grouping

It will be interesting to see how quickly they can firm up the course once the bulk of the rain moves through late on Wednesday, common sense would suggests that it will be by saturday but you never know and it could get firmer by friday's afternoon starters, surely if -7 or better leads after Friday then the pins will be tucked in all weekend and they will keep the course as dry as sensibly possible

Sergio isn't buddies with too many people…

And they have some extra holes prepared on the other course if a few holes flood at Merion. Unprecedented, almost, but they're prepared. I hope it doesn't come to that though.

    • Is it? I bought the Stack radar to replace my PRGR based on what Stack told me! When I am swinging for speed, the PRGR would miss 50%-80% of my backswings due to a higher speed. The stack seldom misses those- at least for me.
    • As an analyst by nature, I would like to compare the scores under both systems. It is something we can easily do if we have the data. I actually thought the new system was less fair to those whose game was on the decline - like mine! Old: Best 10 of last 20 scores with the .96 multiplier. Course handicap excluded course rating and overall par. New: Best 8/20. Course handicap includes course rating -par. My understanding is Stableford caps scores at Net double bogey like stroke play. If so, handicap should be slower to rise because you are only using 8 versus 10 scores. If I am missing something, I am curious enough to  want to understand what that may be. My home course tees that I play are 72.1/154 now. My best score out here is 82. When my game started to decline, my handicap didn’t budge for 13 rounds because of good scores in my first 8! I know I am an anomaly but my handicap has increased almost 80% in the past few years (with only a few rounds this year). For a few months I knew I was losing every bet because my game was nowhere near my handicap. I suspect I have steamrolled a few nuances but that shouldn’t matter much. When I have modeled this with someone playing the same tees and course, one good round, or return to form, will immediately reduce the handicap by some amount.
