I'm hitting balls in the garage!

Edit: Oops. This thread is supposed to be about depression. =P

Nice!  Looks good.

Well it's depressing that I can't hit balls in my garage.

@CarlSpackler, that sucker looks big enough that even I couldn't miss it. Suddenly thinking there's a bunch of stuff in my small garage that we really don't need.

.

+1.  I have a net and mat and can't do it because my garage isn't big enough so I'm subject to the elements. :-(

@CarlSpackler , your gonna lose the "tough, braving the cold, winter practicer" look as long as that heater is visible in the picture.... :)

I played my first simulator round ever with a close friend of mine.  We played Pebble Beach.  I shot a 94 and beat him by 10 strokes.  He usually beats me on the course.  It was a lot of fun.

The only thing that was weird was some of the short game shots. Chips that would usually go 20 yards were going 40 for some reason.  I was using the chipping with a putting method a la @mvmac .  The simulator really gave these a lot of distance compared to how they are on real courses.

I subjected my net to the elements last winter. I don't have a net anymore.
I played my first simulator round ever with a close friend of mine.  We played Pebble Beach.  I shot a 94 and beat him by 10 strokes.  He usually beats me on the course.  It was a lot of fun.   The only thing that was weird was some of the short game shots.
Interesting. I got to try a simulator at a place near me during a demonstration/tour of sorts and didn't find any issue with the short shots. The pro admitted he hadn't fully calibrated the greens yet, so they were running crazy fast. I ended up having to pitch everything onto the fringe and letting it release to the pin. The putting is what throws me off the most. I keep wanting to hit the ball to the screen. But even when the screen said I had a 5' putt and I hit it 1' in real life, the ball went 6' past the hole. I'm planning on going there tomorrow to use the driving range and get some launch numbers on my driver. Hopefully the thing is accurate enough for that.

@Jakester23 and I dealt with the winter blues today by playing 18 at the indoor simulator. Good times.

This past week has been tough. The combination of extreme temps, longer than usual drives home and running the snowblower almost every night has put a damper on my practice. Tomorrow is supposed to warmer with no snow in the forecast. Might be a good day for the simulator.

Just make sure you...

1) Don't hit the ball through the net

2) Then the ball ricochets off of the wooden shelf

3) And finally hits the space heater, which then is all ablaze.

I love this game. :-D

Speaking from experience @dfreuter415 I'm guessing?

You got it! Over the last 30+ years I have a wooded area behind my house and every year I hit balls into a net. Well, after a period of time the net wears out and the balls go zinging through the mesh, endangering birds and other wildlife. :-\

Yeah short game can be a bit iffy on sims. I've hit chips that hit the screen 13.5 feet away at about 2-3 feet off the ground and sim says it only went 6 feet. I've also had some weird pitches where my ball will hit the screen dead center but the sims say my face was wide open and the ball went 30* off-line... Me and my buddies have kind of agreed that if the the sim shows something completely incompatible with what the actual ball did on a chip or pitch then you take an automatic mulligan - this applies even if the result was good, it's an automatic "do-over".

It was weird.  My buddy had a couple that the path was shown as a zig zag and the ball went 10 feet.  It had the opposite when I would be a 10 yard chip and it would go over the green.  The sim must be reading spin and calculating off that.  For the most part, the full swing distances were spot on.

My experience as well. What kind of sim was it? The one I play on has floor mounted sensors similar to the OptiShot. The software is E6.

I thought the same thing with the simulators I've used. Full swings seem reasonably accurate, but pitching and chipping is all over the place. They have putting set as a gimme at 6' which is no where near accurate with my game, but it makes the round go much faster.

It is HD golf.  Graphics were pretty good.

I tried out a new sim golf spot a couple of weeks ago and had the same experience. The full-swing shots were bang on. Chipping and putting were a bit hard to judge. Definitely a fun night out though. It'll get me through the winter.

    • I'm not sure you're calculating the number of strokes you would need to give correctly. The way I figure it, a 6.9 index golfer playing from tees that are rated 70.8/126 would have a course handicap of 6. A 20-index golfer playing from tees that are rated 64/106 would have a course handicap of 11. Therefore, based on the example above, assuming this is the same golf course and these index & slope numbers are based on the different tees, you should only have to give 5 strokes (or one stroke on the five most difficult holes if match play) not 6. Regardless, I get your point...the average golfer has no understanding of how the system works and trying to explain it to people, who haven't bothered to read the documentation provided by either the USGA or the R&A, is hopeless. In any case, I think the WHS as it currently is, does the best job possible of leveling the playing field and I think most golfers (obviously, based on the back & forth on this thread, not all golfers) at least comprehend that.

    • Yes it's true in a large sample like a tournament a bunch of 20 handicaps shouldn't get 13 strokes more than you. One of them will have a day and win. But two on one, the 7 handicap is going to cover those 13 strokes the vast majority of the time. 20 handicaps are shit players. With super high variance and a very asymmetrical distribution of scores. Yes they shoot 85 every once in a while. But they shoot 110 way more often. A 7 handicap's equivalent is shooting 74 every once in a while but... 86 way more often?
