This morning, Golf Channel had a highlight segment on Marc Leishman, as he was 3 under after 3 holes today, and in the lead at -5. Looks like he missed the cut. Wow. I had a round this weekend with fellow TST- ers where my round sorta fell apart at the turn. I won't whine any more about that. Oh that reminds me, Eric ( @0ldblu3 ) told me on the course that he was gonna make a crazy pick on Blixt for the contest here. Not bad, Eric.

I did follow through and make that pick, but I set the score to low. He's playing well but is mixing in a bunch of bogey's with his birdies. 20 par's, 10 birdies, 5 bogey's, and one double.

Why do they call golf "golf"?  Because all the other four letter words were taken.

Whoo! Everyone I picked in the Cobra Driver contest that started made the cut. Maybe I should check to see if anyone chose them with a higher pick.

Rory's gotta 2-putt to make the cut

Excellent! Then I'm still alive with my first pick. Now Rory just needs to go -17 for then next two rounds. 63/64 on the weekend- no prob.

Hmmm maybe the Masters thread isn't the best place for my previous comment. My fault.

Back away slowly from the keyboard....

Crap, Erik sniffed us out of the old chat room hehe

Let's see, I got my stream on the Bubba group at the moment. I got my very unhealthy lunch laid out before me in all its glory. Life could be a lot worse right now, I think.

Oh yea, as the day 1 leader in the Masters contest, and thus, unlikely to win the event (Brandel Chambell led after one round too), I did some quick digging and here is the list of all the past Contest winners at theSandTrap:

2012 Masters -- @VforVendetta, runner-up: @darkstar76

2012 PLAYERS -- @Matthew Brett

2012 US Open -- @Aquaguru

2012 British -- @realed

2012 PGA -- @Yukari

2013 Masters -- @MEfree

2013 US Open -- @Shaggie13, runner-up: @cabelly

2013 British -- @dtambo, runner-up: @Mulligan Jeff

2013 PGA -- @DCrotty22 runner-up: @Aquaguru

No one's ever finished first twice, but @Aquaguru has a 1st and 2nd place finish.

Come on, Bill Haas, don't shoot 78 today!

Bill Haas shot 78 today.

Ugh. Why was it that that had to come true? :yucky:

Still kind of funny though I wrote that before his round.

I see the 11th hole is 505 yrds and a par 4. And the 13th hole 510 yrds and par 5.  So who makes this stuff up?  Seems only right that 500 yrds or more should be par 5 and those idiot 600 yrd holes, par 6.  No 600 yarder at augusta, but hole 2 is 575. It's a good long walk.

Part of par is not only the horizontal distance, but also how long it plays (and generally, which integer they expect the scores to be closest to). 11 is significantly downhill and doesn't have water fronting the entire green. I think the green is larger, too, or at least deeper. You can also tell how accurate par is by the second shot played by pros -- how often have you seen someone lay up on 11 from the fairway? What of 13? The pros aren't looking at par when they make this decision, but how many strokes it will take them to get the ball in the hole. The closest I've seen to a layup on 11 is the occasional draw player aiming right of the green so a missed green results in a chip instead of a drop. Not saying it's right or wrong -- just trying to explain why you can have two holes so close in yardage and yet they're a different par.

So many oldtimers make the cut - so many big names didn't make the cut - what does this say about Augusta National and the Masters  - what's the difference between this event and the other majors?

    • Is it? I bought the Stack radar to replace my PRGR based on what Stack told me! When I am swinging for speed, the PRGR would miss 50%-80% of my backswings due to a higher speed. The stack seldom misses those- at least for me.
    • As an analyst by nature, I would like to compare the scores under both systems. It is something we can easily do if we have the data. I actually thought the new system was less fair to those whose game was on the decline - like mine! Old: Best 10 of last 20 scores with the .96 multiplier. Course handicap excluded course rating and overall par. New: Best 8/20. Course handicap includes course rating -par. My understanding is Stableford caps scores at Net double bogey like stroke play. If so, handicap should be slower to rise because you are only using 8 versus 10 scores. If I am missing something, I am curious enough to  want to understand what that may be. My home course tees that I play are 72.1/154 now. My best score out here is 82. When my game started to decline, my handicap didn’t budge for 13 rounds because of good scores in my first 8! I know I am an anomaly but my handicap has increased almost 80% in the past few years (with only a few rounds this year). For a few months I knew I was losing every bet because my game was nowhere near my handicap. I suspect I have steamrolled a few nuances but that shouldn’t matter much. When I have modeled this with someone playing the same tees and course, one good round, or return to form, will immediately reduce the handicap by some amount.
