What is your biggest pet peeve you see people doing on the golf course?

I don't understand the issue with people playing by the rules. I understand getting annoyed by someone insisting that you play by the rules, but are you really annoyed by them playing by them? That makes zero sense. I play by the rules, always. There is no room for someone to criticize me for it.

I don't understand the issue with people playing by the rules. I understand getting annoyed by someone insisting that you play by the rules, but are you really annoyed by them playing by them? That makes zero sense. I play by the rules, always. There is no room for someone to criticize me for it.

I suspect they mean people being obnoxious about it, pushing on the casual player, or being snotty about it, calling out others for infractions or falsely calling out others for infractions, or using 'rules' as an excuse for very slow or poor play, etc etc.  We all know 'those guys'.

But that pretty much goes for playing by them, not playing by them, or any behavior where a player is being rude.....

Here's another:  People that have random and weird pet peeves based on the normal behavior of others, but won't tell the group about them ahead of time in a courteous way, but instead get all pissed and hot under the collar until they then HAVE to bitch about it in an angry way.

example - We had a guy that was (barely) a little fidgety on the green.  My cart mate bitched and bitched about it every hole (as well as where people could stand for his putts and hits and etc) - but he never just asked the other guy to hold still.  And, frankly, by the middle of the round, I doubt he could have been courteous if he tried.  That wasn't the fidgety guys problem, it was my cart mate's.  (Yes, I quietly talked to the fidgeter about it eventually though it didn't bother me.  But I shouldn't have had to intervene)

In general:

If golf makes you mad, maybe another sport is in order.

If PEOPLE make you mad, maybe another life is in order.

Most of my peeves are about being decent and aware about keeping the course condition nice for others (marks, divots, sand raking, etc etc etc) - so many, to me IMHO, seem to be a lot of wasted energy and irritation at other humans that we have no control over.  But that's pretty much the definition of 'peeves' I guess - they don't have to be logical - we're not wired that way.

Bill -

I don't mind talking/asking about what club you or I just hit. That's part of normal golf conversation to me.

I don't mind either. Gives us a laugh sometimes.

I saw a guy last year hit 4 balls in a row in the water on a par 3 just to prove he could hit the same club somebody else hit. :-D

The really funny part was that was his last ball and when he asked one of the guys if he could borrow a ball they told him "Only if you intend to use a different club this time."

Slight derail When I was playing tournaments in high school, we all knew it was a stroke penalty to ask what club another player was hitting. Trying to help one another out and skirt the rules, we would say stuff like, "so how many balls did you find in the woods on the last hole? I found 6." Showing your club. "Oh, really. I only found 7. Maybe I should go find another."

Good to know. I'll ask my son if he knows this rule.

I like the way you skirted the rules. I suppose you could also just take your time putting the club back into your bag, and wiggle it such that the number on the head shows clearly to your team mate.

No I understand it...  Like I said it doesn't offend me.  And I don't mind telling you what I hit - But as I answer, I'm hoping that you realize that me telling you I hit 7 iron doesn't mean anything if your trying to find out what you need to hit.  I could have hit 8, 9, or 6 iron for the same yardage depending what type of shot that I played or how hard I swing...  Many golfers will not notice that I played a high cut and choked down on the club when my normal shot is a low draw...  the actual swing may look the same but it can be as much as much as a two club difference sometimes...

I guess the one that gets me is when I know someone is asking me what club I hit in order to determine what they should hit...  because I feel like simply saying I hit 7 doesn't provide them with the information they really need to make the right club selection....  I'd rather say "I hit seven and played it to 150"...

People should never cry about lining up putts, especially when it's about 3 foot, I put the ball in the hole everytime, I see some of my friends trying to take putts, when I've seen them miss the same putt many, many times.

I've got a little question for some of you , I play with the same few friends all the time, we never play for money, and I've never been beaten by them, I've had some close scores, but never lost.  I don't really take pride in it, because I know I'm not beating good players, so it makes no odds, but..... they don't play proper rules, no stroke and distance, mulligans, drops all over the place from the water etc taking putts which they shouldn't.  If you got beat, would you guys call them out, or just let them feel like they've won? I say this because there's been times when they've been level etc. going into the last couple of holes, and I once had a playoff, which was fun.

I never act smug and try to be as humble as I can be when playing sports, they know I'm good, and they really want to beat me.

These guys are very good friends btw, so nothing is awkward etc.

1) Spitting on or near the green in particular;

2) Chewing gum with half-open mouths, where you can actually hear the gum crackle and snap - and the more nervous the chewguy gets, the worse the chewing action and sounds become;

3) Guys taking a leak in the half-open: I have no qualms about nature's call in nature itself and thoroughly enjoy it myself, but step away man, I mean, properly away, IN the bushes not near the bushes - don't want to see it, don't want to hear it;

4) People playing from obviously wrong handicaps, whether too high or too low, and then making all kinds of excuses for it on the course. You are a f :censored: cheat, whichever way.

Guy in cart finds my ball, parks right to the side of it, doesn't move. When I swing, guy is like 3 feet away from me. Guy did the same exact thing the hole before and I asked him to move.

Space people, space, there's plenty out there.

Don't stand, Don't stand, Don't stand so close to me...

All of the above, plus people dropping the pin on the green like it's a tree falling. Lay it down nicely.

Unfortunately, not a single person complained about in this thread is a member of The Sand Trap. They will never know they are "that guy".

Nice contribution. That said, I have done many of the things listed in prior posts. In some cases, because I was newer to the game and didn't know any better. In other cases, I simply disagree and think that some of the folks above have a stick up their..... ;)

Honestly, the best time to address it would be after a round you do win.  I would suggest changing the game a little.  If you always win- then propose a match where you give them 2 a side (or what ever is applicable) but say "Okay, we're playing by the real rules today if that's okay... OB- Stroke and distance, play the ball down in your fairway, putt out.. let's make this thing interesting"...

Playing partners who rake it into the hole and then shout "Par!" or "Bogey!" I'm a fairly generous short - if it's a gimmee, chances are I'll tell you so. But I hate to see a 5 foot rake as the 15th club in the bag.

I usually slip the crook of whatever club I have to support one end and let it slide gently to the ground.

    • I did not realize that, I was thinking a more traditional golf club.
    • Thanks for the feedback. @StuM, we are a "club without real estate" so no facilities or pro. We have a membership of around 185 players and we only play together as a group at our tournaments, which are held at public access courses. A group of us setup the tournaments, collect the money and dole out the prizes.
    • In general, granting free relief anywhere on the course isn't recommended.  Similarly, when marking GUR, the VSGA and MAPGA generally don't mark areas that are well away from the intended playing lines, no matter how poor the conditions.  If you hit it far enough offline, you don't necessarily deserve free relief.  And you don't have to damage clubs, take unplayable relief, take the stroke, and drop the ball in a better spot.
    • If it's not broken don't fix it. If you want to add grooves to it just because of looks that's your choice of course. Grooves are cut into putter faces to reduce skid, the roll faced putter is designed to do the same thing. I'm no expert but it seems counter productive to add grooves to the roll face. Maybe you can have it sand-blasted or something to clean up the face. Take a look at Tigers putter, its beat to hell but he still uses it.
    • I get trying to limit relief to the fairway, but how many roots do you typically find in the fairway? Our local rule allows for relief from roots & rocks anywhere on the course (that is in play). My home course has quite a few 100 year old oaks that separate the fairways. Lift and move the ball no closer to the hole. None of us want to damage clubs.
