I'm at work so throw in updates when you can. I was rooting for Stephanie Meadow today. I assume she's done or out of a chance?

Wow Michelle Wie hit a great approach shot on 18. She's got a 15' birdie putt. She can 4 putt for the win.

I think its safe to say now, she's the Womens US Open Champion. Congrats Michelle!!! very well done.

Michelle has no 3 putts the entire tournament on those very difficult Pinehurst greens. Incredible. Even Kaymer 3 putted a few times.

Not a Stacy Lewis fan but that was cool as hell for her to come out and congratulate Michelle on her win.

Agree, it was great that they helped her celebrate.  Great win for Wie, hope it helps silence her detractors.

As a Michelle Wie fan, I really wish I got a chance to watch today. Hopefully they replay it, but if not, I'll certainly catch the highlights. Very happy for her.

Lovely for sure. Very glad to see Michelle getting the champagne shower.

Next week we will find all the 'putting teachers' on UTube telling us why Michelle putted so well.  Her's is no style for old guys, must be tough on the back.  Certainly one of the testaments to the originality and imagination opportunities of golf that at least half the strokes can be administered in such a novel way. Hope that doesn't sound too much like SM.

Michelle Wie Wins U.S. Open for her First Major Championship

Michelle Wie Wins Her First Major Championship

We have all waited for this for such a very long time. Michelle Wie won her first major championship today, by winning the U.S. Open by two strokes over Stacy Lewis.

Michelle started the day in a tie for first place with Amy Yang. At the start it did not appear that this was going to be Michelle's day as she and her playing partner (Yang), both bogeyed the first hole. At that point in the tournament there were 6 players within 3 strokes of the lead. When So Yeon Ryu birdied 1, 2, and 4, she pulled within 2 strokes of the leaders.

Yang then made double Bogey on two, followed by bogeys on 4, 7, 12, and 14, ending any chance she had to win.

Meanwhile Michelle would keep her very slim lead by making pars on 8 consecutive holes (2 through 9).

When Michelle eagled the par 5 tenth hole she increased her lead to three strokes. One by one all the players chasing her would fall out of contention with the exception of a charging Stacy Lewis, and Stephanie Meadow who was making her professional debut.

When Stacy bogeyed the 16th it looked like her chances were over, but birdies on both 17 and 18 got her into the clubhouse at even par, 3 strokes behind Wie.

When Michelle double bogeyed the 16th hole her lead shrunk to just one shot.

Meanwhile Meadow, who was playing incredibly consistent golf, was still in contention if she could birdie 17 and 18 and tie Stacy for the clubhouse lead. She only managed a par on 17, and when she birdied 18 (to finish 3 under on the back 9) she had 3rd place all to herself.

Now it came down to Michelle having to par 17 and 18 to win the championship. She put her approach shot to within 25 feet of the 17th hole and drilled her birdie putt in the center of the hole for a 2 stroke lead. When she sank her par putt on the 18th hole it was all over and she had the 4th victory of her career and first major championship.

It was Michelle's second victory of the season, and 9th victory for U.S. players this year. It also made the U.S. 2 for 2 in major championships this year as Lexi Thompson won the Kraft earlier this year.

Awesome! I didn't get to watch, but I'm happy with the outcome just the same.
There's no contest for this week's Open, but I'll submit choices just the same, for bragging rights I guess. Michelle Wie, -4 Ai Miyazato, -4 Cheyenne Woods -3
So close! I didn't check: did anyone else have her closer? Do I win the bragging rights? ;-)

    • Ooh, I don't know about that. I've hit flop shots that are 6-7° down. The more you widen the spin loft the less ball speed you put into the ball.
    • Re: your graphic, ‘ I expected a little more from a varsity letterman.’ Lol…just another one for @boogielicious
    • Can't brag about a 50 last night but it was the best round of my season (4 rounds of 9 holes) so I am not as upset as I could be.  One thing I am noticed is that I got a little more confident in my long hybrids and I attempted a couple longer shots that typically I would just lay up and those holes were a big part of the lower score.  Not every shot was great but good enough that they helped.  I even shot par on a Par 5 after taking a drop.  On that hole I would usually lay-up to @ 100 yards and often miss the green altogether with my 3rd shot (or worse chunk my approach and put it in the waste area).  Yesterday I went for it from @ 200 yards out with wind in my face and landed in the waste area short of the green.  My drop left @ 40 yards in and I stuck it to 3 feet for my par putt.  If I had laid up I would have avoided the penalty stroke but likely would not have been on the green in regulation and may still have been working for par.  By going for it I gave myself a chance at birdie and still saved par. I do not plan on being crazy aggressive but I think I tend to be too conservative at times so I will "go for it" a little more often going forward.
    • Day 14 (15 May 24) - Worked with the SW in the backyard, short pitches from 10yds up to 30yds.   Focused on ball placement in stance - ball back, ball forward, ball center.  Afterwards moved to inside the shop to work on putting pace on the rug - putting one way gives about an 8' putt, going the other a 6' before bumping onto the adjacent rug.  Focused there on the line - picking a target point about 18"-24" out and making sure the ball rolls through that point.
    • When someone is trying to validate their choice, statements concluding with "right" are often the MO.  Too bad he thinks he has to keep defending his decision, just do like guys like DJ and HVIII - take the money, play the tourneys and keep quiet.
