I hope you aren't pinning hopes for role models for your kids on athletes, or anybody else that you don't even know.

Is this thread for real? Geez. If Phil gets busted for insider trading, the people who he screwed out of money get to be upset at him. His family and friends get to be upset at him. The sponsors who lose revenue because of him get to be upset at him. Any parent whose kid can't discern right from wrong because they offloaded their responsibilities onto Phil Mickelson doesn't get to be.

This is not the role model I want for my kids and this is the last straw for me with Phil.

Why would you ever present someone you don’t know as an example for your kids?
The biggest influence on values comes from what the kids see from their parents.

I don't know anything about insider trading, does it mean that you screw people out of their money like a ponzi scheme? I thought it just meant that you make money trading stocks before other people get info on them.

Well; let us say you get info the company is going under, you end up selling all of your shares to people who think they will make money but instead end up losing every penny.. To you! Ya, you just screwed them!

The person closest in age to being a "kid" who looks to Phil as a role model probably has a mortgage, a 2 year lease on a Hyundai, and $50,000 in student loan debt. No disrespect to Mr. Mickelson, but he's no spring chicken, is he? I remember being a teenager and watching him sitting next to Woosnam as the highest placed amateur the year Woosie won the Masters, and that's a helluva long time ago.

This isn't Rory or Rickie we're (or rather you're) talking about. It's a man who's a few years out from the Champion's Tour...

Listen here, Phil is great to kids, signs autographs for hours on end after every round. Sure he gambles and takes risks, and this whole insider trading issue is very conserning. But lets here the facts first and what is the result of the investigation first, before you start stating ludicrous things in the stupid thread you created.

Tiger doesn't like signing autographs, he bangs hookers in Vegas. Tiger is VERY VERY VERY cheap tightwade. He doesn't tip, if he does it very small amount at restaurants. After he finishes his meals, he walks away from the table, even though though people at the table are not done, he will walk out. Ya great role model Tiger is.

All the gambling on the course is no example for our young kids. You cannot be this nonchalant and irresponsible when kids are looking up to you. He needs to seek some help for this gambling problem and the high he gets trying to make money. I really hope these allegations are not true, but let's be honest, we all know it's his nature to take risks like this. I think the guy is bad for the game and is possible felon to boot.

Virtually every pro gambles when they play.  To think otherwise is naive.  They always have a wager going during the practice rounds, and sometimes they have side bets going during the tournament rounds.  Professional golf was founded by players gambling.  Time to get off your high horse.

I also blame Phil for the new casinos going up in New York State, the popularity of Texas Hold-em, and Las Vegas. If Phil didn't gamble, none of these would have ever happened.

Well, as far as I know Tiger isn't being investigated over insider trading which is a felony. Tiger may have done wrong but I didn't see the FBI talking to him in airports or after rounds.

Right. But cheating on your wife and making your kids (and other family members) go through the embarrassment is good and a good example for others to follow?

So, one has to be under investigation to be really bad...is that your threshold?

    • A bit of background. The Southern California Golf Association (SCGA) runs an annual event known as "Team Play." It is a wildly popular match play competition where Men's Clubs across the region put together teams of 20+ golfers together to compete against other clubs in a 16 vs. 16 match. In any given year, approximately 80-100 clubs will participate. Each club is grouped into "pods" of 4, and will play 6 total matches - one home and one away match against the other 3 clubs. The winning club from each pod advances to the Team Play Playoffs - a single elimination format - until a winner is crowned.  Antelope Valley Country Club just advanced to the championship match for the 3rd consecutive year. They won the championship in both 2022 and 2023.  Based on my review of the match history from the past 3 years (linked below), they have won 21 consecutive team matches. Keep in mind, these are handicapped matches, so this is not just a case where a group of sticks bands together to dominate the poor amateurs other SoCal clubs. Even if these guys are grinders who never quit, play their best under pressure and routinely putt the lights out, the law of averages still say that a streak of that nature is mathematically impossible.  Is there any plausible explanation beyond institutionalized sandbagging throughout the club? • Interesting that Scottie is #10 on the all time money list and he's been on the PGAT for 4 years. Of course, purses are bigger now, but  neat to look at non-the-less.  The list of top 18 money winners in PGA Tour history has plenty of surprises This list is updated through the 2024 RBC Heritage. To add, Scottie won 4.5 million at the Players, Jack played 44 seasons and won a little of 5 million on course.
