Gorgeous day here in Albuquerque, 75° and sunny, perfect day to play golf. Had my best ball striking round of the year. Missed 7 greens but 4 of them were no more then 6-8 inches off the putting surface. Hit all four par fives in two, made one eagle and had a good look at two others.  Finally hit the driver well only had one or two drives really get a way from me. Overall quite happy with the round.

Really happy with this - 74 at Royal St George's (Open venue for 2020) and definitely had some left in the tank. Drove the ball pretty well, my approach play is getting better and I struck my 3 wood better than I have for a long time, which really helped on the long par fours. Still not nailing contact with my irons, which is frustrating, but short game was solid and I putted relatively well. Some really subtle breaks as well - the birdie putt I missed on 17 was a putt I hit right where I wanted to and I simply hadn't read the break, even with AimPoint.

Currently focusing on: Key 4 - shorter backswing.

A bit of an odd round today, in that I gained (against a scratch golfer) 0.35 strokes driving, 0.65 strokes with the short game, lost 1.23 strokes with my putting (just a lot of bumpy greens and some five-footers that didn't go), and… gained 4.34 strokes with the approach shots.

This was highlighted on the first hole when I heel cut a driver into the fairway (blech), then hit a 4I to about eight feet from about 200 out.

Greens were top dressed this week so putting was a bit of a chore. Hit my longest drive of the year...401 yards. (Somewhat aided by at least one hop off the cart path ) Overall a good round. 70 (-2)

Driving was decent, kept it in play, irons and short game were awful, putting was real solid and is what saved the round, made 7 putts of 6 feet or longer.

Shot 91 today at Memorial Park. Interesting round as I made par on the first three holes and the last three. cool way to finish.GG did a horrible job picking up the distance on my putts...not sure why as that hasn't really happened that bad before. Anywho, it was a good round. Really felt like I was seeing progress from my practice.

Nice round @HJJ003. You're getting good distance from that 3w off the tee.

Thanks Jon. Yeah I’m really liking that club. Makes me wonder what I could do if I had a good driver in the bag.

got off the tee OK

irons were inconsistent.

Short game was horrendous. I need to figure something out here.

Putting was hit or miss. Made some really good putts, then had some bad ones.

A tad better ball striking day than yesterday. Then I got into the habit of hooking the ball. I think I wasn't turning enough and the hands got a bit quick.

Right now the full swing feel is a slow backswing with good hip turn priority piece. Downswing is just make a turn towards the target.

Was probably the best round ever with my irons. Was making solid contact the entire round and had multiple birdie putts of less than 15 feet but was only able to convert one.

Course was cart path only and fairway grass was very long so most drives had very little roll.

Played the par 5s well and had no 6's all round. Solid day overall.

Great Round! You weren't kidding about your iron shots...and it looks like you scrambled fairly well also whenever you missed.

First round of the year... 3rd week of April :pound:

Played as poorly as I would have expected to. Did have a few decent shots, but kept having tree trouble. Pretty much didn't have a clean look at any green which complicated matters. Not that I did anything good when I did have good lies, but I made it harder on myself today than it needed to be.

Putting was OK -- first round out with the Edel and I expected there to be an adjustment period. I can see this turning around, though. I missed a number of mid-range putts, but everything I missed inside 6' was just missed and burned the edge of the cup. Distance control was pretty consistent: even as the greens sped up during the round, I missed long by about 2-3', rather than 3' on one hole, 6' on another, etc. Both are significant steps forward in my putting. The only thing I really messed up was lag putting and there were times I just never hit the ball far enough or it would oddly stop in the middle of a downhill slope I wasn't expecting.

Short game was atrocious. Kept blading my pitches and bunker shots. The only thing that ended up working was greenside chips. I sorted it out on the practice green after the round. Apparently what happened was I changed my takeaway for my full swing and that motion bled into my pitching so I wasn't exposing the bounce properly. On the bright side, I wrote my partial wedge distances in a notebook I kept in my pocket and that came in handy a few times during the round.

Thanks! It was my first round out after using and practicing with The Hanger for a few days. I dont want to say it solved all of my problems, might have been a coincidence, but felt good to be practicing with the training aid and then have a solid round with irons.

For the scrambling, yeah it was a little better than I usually do, I think it was because I was using my 50 degree wedge and playing bump and runs as often as possible instead of using my 60 degree like I used to do.

Played pretty well today. 33. Left a putt just short on 8 that could have gone down, too.

    • I mean, a golfer is trespassing and damaging property. So, golf rules don’t supersede state laws. 😉 Like, if it isn’t marked and is off golf property. The right thing to do is take an unplayable lie or take stroke and distance.  Also, this is a liability for the course. The homeowner could easily say the course is liable for damage done because they knowingly didn't mark their boundaries which allowed golfers to trespass and damage property.
    • Interestingly enough, if the course (the Committee in Rules terms) doesn't mark the boundaries, there is nothing out of bounds.  I realize that neighboring homeowners would take a dim view of golfers whacking balls from their backyards, but that's what the Definition of Out of Bounds requires. "All areas outside the boundary edge of the course as defined by the Committee."
    • I had two events the past two days. Yesterday I was playing a course blind. Hit it solid. Hit 9/14 fairways, 12/18 greens, 34 putts. Many of those putts were the result of balls that were close-ish to the hole when they landed, but wound up a long way away once they'd finished rolling (backwards mainly). Then today, hit 11/13 fairways, 11/18 greens, 37 putts, and shot 80. 8 over par and it wasn't particularly pretty. My big problem today was my pitching. I was inside 100 yards of the hole and off the green on 9 occasions.  1st - drive to about 75 yards, fanned a 58 degree short and right. On the green, but a good 40 feet away and good two putt from there (so took 3) 2nd - laid up to a bunker and it's narrow past it, so had 165 in, missed it right with an 8 iron. Wet rough, chip from about 5 yards off the green and the club snagged. It got on the green, but only temporarily. Overcorrected a bit on the next one and hit it a bit firm and it rolled out to about 35 feet. Putt didn't break and it ran on a bit and I missed the one back (greens were fast and a little bumpy, which didn't help, but doesn't excuse either). (took 5 to get down from close to the green) 4th - had about 95 from the right rough, hit it on the green and two putts (3) 5th - 90 from the fairway, tugged it and it got a firm bounce, chipped on and hit what I thought was a decent chip, but it ran out down the hill and two putts from 20 feet (4) 7th - 65 from the fairway, significant upslope and hit it a bit hard, ran long left against the collar. Tried to blade a PW, but it got under a bit so didn't advance it anything like far enough. Made a good two putt from there (4) 11th - 63 from the fairway, hit a squirrelly pitch on the green and two putts (3) 12th - 75 from the semi-rough, caught it a bit clean and it wound up on the back edge. Putting down a tier and it ran 8 feet past (that was actually a really good putt and couldn't have done any better I don't think) and missed that (4) 13th - 55 from the fairway, overcorrected and hit the big ball before the small ball. Then made a stellar up and down from 25 yards short to an elevated green with a putter (3) 15th - down in three from a greenside bunker (3) That was it. The other 9 holes I hit it on the green from outside 100 yards. So on those 9 occasions, I took 32 shots to get in the hole. 3.56 average. Terrible. Reason I'm posting this in here is to see if anyone has any suggestions for how to work on my contact with pitch shots. I don't have access to a grass range. Only mats and it's easy off a mat. Partly I think my problem is I've hit it off mats so much this winter that I've lost my judgement on where the ball is versus the ground because of the leeway granted. Open to ideas. I also suspect that under pressure I stand a bit closer to it and then get steep and hit down on it and it puts me in a bad place, but I can't seem to get myself to not do that.
