Ordinarily, a 96 wouldn't be much to get excited about, but I played from the blue tees again today to work on the driver. While the par 5s have pretty wide fairways, there are a couple of par 4's that just kick my butt when using the driver from these tees.

Hole 5 was especially costly. Playing this hole twice, I had 3 out of bounds and 2 successful drives.

High point... after a 10 stroke blow up hole which included 2 out of bounds and to go along with a 3 putt, I birdied the following hole with a well-struct 4h, followed by a flighted 9i, followed by a 25' putt from the back fringe to a flag location at the top of a ridge. If I hit this putt just a bit too hard, it rolls all the way off the front.

A big part of my instructor's lesson plan is for me to "stay in the present" and not let a bad shot or hole affect the next. I think I was able to do that several times today.

Final warm-up before the Talamore trip.

Shot 75, 3 birdies, 6 bogeys, 10/14 FW's, 13/18 GIR, 33 putts.

Took me a few holes to get the speed down. Greens were slower than they looked, which I always struggle with.

Hit my driver and irons about as good as I could hit them. Had a few holes that my irons went shockingly long on. Wind was not a factor.

Short game was eh. I still struggle with picking the right landing spot and trajectory. Even though I practice this a lot, still tough for me to take it to the course.

Shot a +2 for 9 holes, 1 bogey, 1 double, 1 birdie. 7 out of 9 GIR, very solid ball striking day.

Hit two of my best shots of the season for the approach shot on the first hole. 7 iron from 180yds out, ball started just left of the flag, had a slight fade that brought it right back in line with the flag, put it to 6 feet right below the hole. (left the 6 foot uphill putt short :censored:)

Other shot was my 2nd shot into the first par 5, very elevated green, from 200 yds out I carried a 5 iron just far enough and landed on the fringe. Kind of unlucky it didnt pop up and onto the green, but was able to 2 putt from the fringe for a birdie

Shot + 2 for 9 holes again, 3 bogeys, 1 birdie. Course was very wet with virtually no roll, and the fairway grass was as long as most rough I usually play on, so got multiple jumpers out of the middle of the fairway so distance control was spotty. Still not a bad round overall.

75. Made no putts, but it was also about blowing about 35 MPH.

Started off poorly on #1 due to hurrying - Driver into a bunker, wedge long, pitch shot long (but where intended - safer), holed a 25-footer from the fringe.

Holed a birdie putt on #2 from about 18 feet. 1 putt.

Holed a birdie putt from about 10 feet on #3. 2 putts.

Holed a birdie putt from about 15 feet on #4. 3 putts.

4 holes. 🙂 3 putts.

+6 78. Frustrating to make two 7s on par 5s, but oh well. Hit the ball great, drove the ball well, putting okay. Could have/should have been lower without missing a couple of short putts, but I also holed a couple of 5-10 footers that I might not usually. Just realized I hit 13 GIR, so that's real solid.

I played this course a month and a half ago and shot a 105.  I've recently been working on my swing and had some success yesterday adding getting my weight forward at the range so thought I'd try it at the course until I couldn't hit the ball and went 3 over, 7 over, and 2 over (12 over total) to start the round which obviously wasn't good considering I only went 5 over on those three holes back in July.

Even thought he score was abysmal, overall I didn't strike the ball terribly after the first three holes - a lot of my score had to do with a horrid short game and putting being embarrassing which included three 3 putts and two four putts and didn't include about 3 or 4 holes where I used the putter off the green.

Everything was just off. Flushed a couple of shots that ended up being longer than I was playing for, so even my good hits weren't working for me today. It was a serious grind and not particularly enjoyable.

Really happy with the bounce back +1 on the back 9. My putter was a little balky on the front 9, and the pin placements were tough, so that led to some issues.

So, even though the score doesn't reflect it, I'm encouraged by what's going on in my round as I was making better contact, however, I was leaking most of my shots right (and some really right) so not sure what's going on there.  Have to take video.  Short game was brutal, putting was decent.

Following up on the stats above, I played a different course today and shot 2 strokes worse, hit 3 more greens, with 6 penalty strokes in my first 5 holes.  My driver is crap right now as I have to close the clubface in order for the ball to have a chance to be in play, otherwise it'll slice right into the woods.  Probably not going to have a practice session until next week, though, as I've booked a round for tomorrow and for Sunday though Teeoff and Golfnow respectively.

Playing a different course tomorrow that I've never played before so hoping to get a sub 100 round even with my driver woes!.

Decent round (91) today, which could have been better if not for my typical shitty putting and two penalties (one lost ball, one water hazard).

I just acquired a new driver (Ping G400), and I hit it well.  I birdied my first hole, which was neat:

This was a fantastic performance, even for me:

Good drive (236 but all carry) to the better side of the fairway...less than 100 yards left...and it took me 5 more shots to get on the green.  Ooof.  Three fat wedges and a chunked chip shot before I gave up and just putted from the rough.

So, after shooting a 106 on Thursday and a 108 yesterday I shot a 103 today.

A bit disheartening as my goal was to shoot 95 (realistically under 100) even though I had never played the course before and I had a birdie on the front 9, putting up a 50 on the front.  However, driver is still erratic as ever and the course did allow the use of the driver on their range.  Can't get it under control as I feel that's been the issue for me as I feel tepid when I have to hit driver, to the point that I've never felt this much trepidation with my driver.  This is bothering me so that after the round, before getting home, I went to my local range and filmed a few driver swings to see what I'm doing since I incorporated this swing change.  A lot of my penalty shots are balls I can't find because they're in the rough or trees rather than going OOB.  The only good thing I took away was my putting being pretty on point, with only two 3 putts and only leaving one second putter than than 6 feet.  Anyway, here are the stats.

Score: 103

GIR: 2/18

Penalty: 4

Putts: 1.72/hole

Average distance of first putt: 18.5 feet

I didn't know what to make of this round when I was playing it.

Hit the ball poorly, especially off the tee. Had one good drive, the others were toe-y big sweepers both high and low that went nowhere. Also had a lot of tree trouble for a course not known for its trees. It's funny too, because I was hitting the ball really well with my short irons (minus the par 3 tees) and was actually hitting them farther than I expected them to go. So somehow I was hitting worse than expected and better than expected shots all in the same round.

Short game was on fire and the putting matched it. I was going to say it's the best I've ever played around the greens, but honestly it's probably the best I've ever played inside 100 yards.

Golf is more fun when I hit the ball well, though, so hopefully tomorrow is a better day.

Shot a couple 44's to break 90 again.

For the last month or so, I've been playing the type of golf I've been hoping to play for several years now. Today I finally had a round I could apply towards my HC. I've had some personal shit to deal with for the last week or so and couldn't practice properly. I was unsure how it would go and I feel fortunate to have kept it up. I don't know how long this will last, but it's enjoyable golf.

Not the best ball striking (irons) or short game today, but I did drive the ball with a lot less left to right spin (no Idea why). I kept everything in play and ended the round using the same ball I started with. There were a couple lucky shots that went through instead of staying in the trees, so I guess there was enough luck to offset the duffs.

I'm curious to see how I play a longer, tougher course that I'm not used to. If I get some time off, I might take a trip to the middle of state and play a random course.

    • @boogielicious and I are definitely in for the Stay & Play and will need the extra night's stay on Friday. I don't know what the plans are for our group on Friday but even if we don't make it for dinner with the rest of the Friday arrivals, I'll be more than happy to meet up somewhere for a beer or something.
    • Taking your dispersion and distance in consideration I analyzed the 4 posible ways to play the hole, or at least the ones that were listed here. I took the brown grass on the left as fescue were you need to punch out sideways to the fairway and rigth of the car path to be fescue too.  Driver "going for the green"  You have to aim more rigth, to the bunker in order to center your shotzone in between the fescue.  Wood of 240 over the bunkers I already like this one more for you. More room to land between the fescue. Balls in the fescue 11% down from 30% with driver. Improve of score from 4.55 to 4.40. 4 iron 210 yards besides the bunkers.    Also a wide area and your shot zone is better than previous ones. This makes almost the fescue dissapear. You really need to hit a bad one (sometimes shit happens). Because of that and only having 120 yards in this is the best choice so far. Down to 4.32 from 4.40. Finally the 6 Iron 180 yards to avoid all trouble.    Wide area an narrow dispersion for almost been in the fairway all the time. Similar than the previous one but 25 yards farther for the hole to avoid been in the bunkers. Average remains the same, 4.33 to 4.32.  Conclusion is easy. Either your 4iron or 6 iron of the tee are equaly good for you. Glad that you made par!
    • Wish I could have spent 5 minutes in the middle of the morning round to hit some balls at the range. Just did much more of right side through with keeping the shoulders feeling level (not dipping), and I was flushing them. Lol. Maybe too much focus on hands stuff while playing.
    • Last year I made an excel that can easily measure with my own SG data the average score for each club of the tee. Even the difference in score if you aim more left or right with the same club. I like it because it can be tweaked to account for different kind of rough, trees, hazards, greens etc.     As an example, On Par 5's that you have fescue on both sides were you can count them as a water hazard (penalty or punch out sideways), unless 3 wood or hybrid lands in a wider area between the fescue you should always hit driver. With a shorter club you are going to hit a couple less balls in the fescue than driver but you are not going to offset the fact that 100% of the shots are going to be played 30 or more yards longer. Here is a 560 par 5. Driver distance 280 yards total, 3 wood 250, hybrid 220. Distance between fescue is 30 yards (pretty tight). Dispersion for Driver is 62 yards. 56 for 3 wood and 49 for hybrid. Aiming of course at the middle of the fairway (20 yards wide) with driver you are going to hit 34% of balls on the fescue (17% left/17% right). 48% to the fairway and the rest to the rough.  The average score is going to be around 5.14. Looking at the result with 3 wood and hybrid you are going to hit less balls in the fescue but because of having longer 2nd shots you are going to score slightly worst. 5.17 and 5.25 respectively.    Things changes when the fescue is taller and you are probably going to loose the ball so changing the penalty of hitting there playing a 3 wood or hybrid gives a better score in the hole.  Off course 30 yards between penalty hazards is way to small. You normally have 60 or more, in that cases the score is going to be more close to 5 and been the Driver the weapon of choice.  The point is to see that no matter how tight the hole is, depending on the hole sometimes Driver is the play and sometimes 6 irons is the play. Is easy to see that on easy holes, but holes like this:  you need to crunch the numbers to find the best strategy.
