http://www.nbcnewyork.com/investigations/President-Obama-Rejected-Trump-Golf-Course-Westchester-274423351.html

Quote:

The Trump National Golf Club, the Winged Foot and Willow Ridge were among some of the elite courses that rebuffed the president's request to tee off there, according to several sources who were told about the president's advance team's calls to the club managers.

Club managers apparently did not want to inconvenience their high-powered and high-paying members over Labor Day weekend by shutting down their courses to accommodate the president.

Don't feel bad, Mr. President. I couldn't get a tee time at any of those places, either.

He should have slept in his car in the parking lot at Bethpage State Park :-D

Frankly, this speaks to the position of the POTUS and USA economic and social  reality.  Such an occurrence  could never happen in most countries.  Imagine the prez of china denied a tee time by a private club.  Haha. forty heads would roll.

It's a great decision.

It's not about him being denied a tee time, is about probably a couple of hundred players NOT being denied a tee time.

I've been denied tee times lots of times and always at private clubs that I don't belong to. Why hasn't my story made the news? :hmm: ...Oh yeah cause no one cares! At the end of the day its not news or a story. Its just a guy that tried to play golf on a busy weekend and was denied due to full occupancy.

Actually that's not all there is to the story, the fact he was denied a tee time is a minor subplot to the overall story of why the POTUS was trying to play golf when there was a world crisis in which the US admittedly didn't have a plan to address.

As for the clubs that denied the request, I agree with @David in FL the POTUS request to play on your course is likely seen as an honor, the clubs management did the right thing by protecting their paying members who had already booked tee times.

Either way, he didn't address the crisis and you can't expect the guy to always be working. I just fail to see how him not getting a tee time is worthy of making news. I get the problem with Isis but theres always things the prez will have to worry about yet he will still play a round of golf or have leisure time. The fact is they're making an issue that he couldn't get a tee time so he went home early...seriously this is what they have to report on. There is so many other things going on in the world that is far more interesting then the prez not getting a tee time on a busy long weekend.

Wasn't it Winged Foot that famously denied Bill Clinton membership when Mrs. Clinton moved to NY to set up her senate run? Their stated reason was that having a former POTUS would create a ton of hassle for the members. Seems like a rational decision to me. Trump on the other hand, promising Mr. Obama a free membership to any of his clubs if he resigns the presidency, is ridiculous as always. This thread has potential to go sideways, gents. Please let's keep it civil and focused on presidential golf. This isn't a politics forum.

I respect whoever is the POTUS wether I agree with them or not, I get not having a spot available because shutting down the course would easily backfire on management. I don't see it as a message about not liking the politics but more about not wanting to inconvience the membership.

I have no problem with POTUS taking days off, playing golf, hanging out at the ranch. These guys are ALWAYS  connected and probably never get more then a few minutes where they are not dealing with issues, yeah they signed up for it but we all need time to refresh the batteries. I wonder how many sleepless nights dealing with major issues have taken place that we will never know about.

I guessing POTUS doesn't announce in advance when he's playing for security reasons, so more than a few people have had their rounds cancelled because he played a round. I wonder if the WH sends those people an "apology" gift or something. Like a box of balls with the Presidential seal. Personally, I'd rather play, a box of balls ain't gonna make things better unless I was able to find a round elsewhere.

I've been on the course when Pres. Obama was playing--at Marine Corps Base-Hawaii in Kaneohe Bay. I was playing up the 16th when he teed off on the first. Came surprisingly close to his entourage as the 16th green is only a hundred yards or so from the first tee. We had no idea he was coming out that day when we teed off, and the entire front nine was open ahead of him. Driving home from the course that morning was a huge PITA as most of the roads were blocked. Lesson: no one wants to play on the same day at the same course as the Pres. It's not worth the hassle.

Dear Mr President - Now that it's personal, I see you learned a few things.

1 - a business has to make money or go out of business

2 - government serves us, not the other way around

3 - the president isn't a king

I know, shocking, those three items must be very confusing to you.  Pretty much upsetting everything your entire reality was based on.

I know you were indoctrinated from a young age to assume that all businesses are overflowing with cash and can just stop everything for government royalty and give everything to government for random, subjective reasons, while they will continue on their merry way unaffected - it doesn't work that way - everything has to be paid for - nothing is free.  I hope this clears things up a bit about how the economy really works.  about how businesses really work.

have a great summer,

300 million people

I'm thrilled that the businesses met their commitments to their customers and didn't allow one person to take away their income by inconveniencing 100's.

How hard is it to make a tee time under an alias?  Or a whole crapload of tee times to keep him separate from the public?  secret service guys play golf

I don't. I respect the position that is the presidency of the USA. I do not have to respect the man who sits in that chair.

You know for a fact that he could have done something more. Sometimes problems and issues can't be solved working 24/7. Sometimes there are gaps where a person has nothing else they can do. We all like to say, "But he's the president, there must be something he can do." Well outside of stretching or breaking the constitution through executive order, there isn't.

I am not an Obama supporter, but I wont bash him for taking some time off when he has it available. We have no clue if he is brushing off any important duties or not. I for one wont assume he is just because I don't like him.

Not to mention that he has a rather large staff who would be working on any needed issues.  To deny him any down time is unrealistic.  Everyone needs a chance to unwind.

The real issue is that for him to play, the course needs to be virtually shut down, and with it being the last holiday of the summer season, that just isn't reasonable.  If he had asked at a nearby muni, they'd have been falling all over themselves to cancel tee times so they could accommodate him.  Their clientele just doesn't have the status of the members of those major private clubs.

Seeing as how a course must essentially shut down for him to play... what kind of compensation do you think the course receives when they DO allow him to play?  Certainly not just the regular greens fee?  I mean I get the publicity behind the president playing your course and it's benefits, but it certainly has its fair share of cons and they are still a business after all.

I know that I'm usually not a fan of Obama, but in this case I wasn't bashing him, I was explaining the reason the press picked up the story.

    • For someone with a very consistent swing speed and ball strike, upgrades may improve performance. For everyday golfers, probably not. I'm a rather odd player. I usually get best performance from basic pro or tour heads, but with lighter stock shaft from the model's standard driver set up. (Yes, current EXS is an exception.) When I get a full driver fitting, I usually try a couple of modest upgrade  (not super magic) shafts. Most of the time upgrade gives a couple of extra yards, or 10 yards less. Remember this about stock shafts: They are matched to a particular driver model to fit the type of player likely to adopt that model. Also, most OEMs offer a variety of stock shafts in their drivers. Test for which one works best. And, the final decider...
    • Uh, seeing you're having trouble with hit-and-miss performance from inherited clubs... Get Fitted! IF the 910H pair don't work, swap them out. Also, only two degrees separation in loft is not much. You might consider a 4W (much more reliable than a 3W) plus hybrid. This would give more distance separation than two Hs. For hybrid, get one you can hit... Maybe a more benevolent 4H. Quite often I try to brand match my bridge clubs (FWs and Hs), and my irons and wedges... but not always. Whatever works!
    • Like others have said, get fitted. Since 2011, I have played some combination of 4W + 7W. I had a Cobra 3H and 4H a couple of years back, and would swap out the 7W for a 3H in cold months (keep out of cold wind, and rough thinner for wayward drives.) The 7W matched up with yardage often with 3H; the current 4H goes almost as long as 7W, but has a lower trajectory. 4H also bumped out 4i in last bag redo; I learned to hit stinger with 4H so that's my driving iron on tight holes with shallow landing area. Again, a side-by-side test will tell you which way to go. If 5W or 3H is meh, keep the 7W. Also, are you looking to replace the 7W with a 5W or 3H, or add a second bridge club (5W or 3H) to your bag?
    • Makes sense and aligns with other literature. Static stretching, especially for longer durations, can impede performance in strength and power activities. I would not want to do like hamstring, quad, and calf stretches then go immediately sprint. To me that sounds like a terrible Idea. I would rather start off walking, then jogging, then running, then ramp up to sprinting.  To me, static stretching isn't even a warmup activity. I like the term warmup; you want to get some exertion going before the activity.      a { text-decoration: none; color: #464feb; } tr th, tr td { border: 1px solid #e6e6e6; } tr th { background-color: #f5f5f5; }
    • Going to Florida for the usual February golf trip, and with our current weather, that date won't get here soon enough. Heading to Augusta GA for the Tuesday Master's practice round, will definitely get some golf in while I'm in the area for a few days. Hope to be able to catch up with @coachjimsc if he's around. Then it's back to Scotland first of July.  Playing 7 new courses, can't wait for that.  Then somewhere after that is the Rhode Island CC Member-Guest and then my normal October golf trip to Myrtle Beach.
