Golf Channel bit on Como - Begay talks about Como and how Como and Woods hooked up.

What's is Chris' association with 5SK?

I don't know exactly what that means but ... it's something. ;)

Pretty interesting stuff.
That's interesting. As a 5SK instructor I wonder why these things would be important to him? 3 questions for @iacas or @mvmac - It was implied that Como would not be mentioning 5SK publicly any time soon - why is that? Does Como do anything with putting? AimPoint perhaps? How will Como tackle Tiger's driver woes?
I would like to hear these answers as well.

I think he could still contribute.

@jclark He was being snarky given the Jenkins piece.

I have only seen a couple of Como's videos and he seems to like more of a laid off position with a bowed type wrist in transition.

I don't think that's true.

It was implied that Como would not be mentioning 5SK publicly any time soon - why is that?

Does Como do anything with putting? AimPoint perhaps?

How will Como tackle Tiger's driver woes?

1) There's no reason to. It's one of 10 or 15 accreditations he has earned, including his degree in biomechanics. They're not even all strictly golf-related. He's done a lot of studying. 5SK is simply one of the things he's spent some time learning. Him being a 5SK instructor is, in some ways, about our endorsement of him as much as it is the other way.

2) I don't think so. So far as I know he's aware of it, understands some of the basic science behind it, etc.

3) Give it a few months and I'll ask him. :)

What's is Chris' association with 5SK?

He's a 5SK Director of Instruction. We only accept people who are referred or invited. Chris is one of the brighter minds in golf.

Again, though Chris is a 5SK Director, he can also claim to be certified and trained in several other things as well.

This honor and all congratulations here belong 100% to Chris for his hard work, dedication, commitment to learning, etc.

Congrats to Chris and the 5Sk team. I'm new here and never heard of them, but I'm going to look into it now.

I have to chime in a bit here... what happened to the days of passing information down from generation to generation? Harmon changed tigers grip, synced up his upper/lower body and he dominated. I highly doubt an old school teacher would give 2 shits about video and positions. Look at what Harmon did with Fowler in a year...there are "secrets" handed down from generation to generation, not videos and bio-mechanics. I fear that Tiger will attempt to get into positions again and end up with an even worse swing.

In my mind, Tiger needs to stop going to swing coaches. He needs to start hitting balls, minimize the weights, take care of his body (stretch, yoga, massage, chiropractic, etc.) and regain his mental edge.  Tiger's game is all about confidence and freedom...he has lost that. He gets angry now and is trying to play a perfect golf swing not golf. Maybe a 30 year old can bring him back to the game, but I doubt it. He needs wisdom, he needs a mentor...BOTTOM LINE!

We might as well call this Foley 2.0-- maybe iacas can provide a better picture than this ( crossing my fingers, hoping and praying), but I'm afraid it is over if this is true.

My thoughts are that Tigs needs to just take his range swing to the course. Stop lashing at the damn ball and just hit it like you do relaxed on the range.

Interested in hearing from those who are familiar with Como's instruction methods on what they believe will be focus.

Congrats to Chris and the 5Sk team. I'm new here and never heard of them, but I'm going to look into it now.

You can start here:

I have to chime in a bit here... what happened to the days of passing information down from generation to generation? Harmon changed tigers grip, synced up his upper/lower body and he dominated. I highly doubt an old school teacher would give 2 shits about video and positions. Look at what Harmon did with Fowler in a year...there are "secrets" handed down from generation to generation, not videos and bio-mechanics. I fear that Tiger will attempt to get into positions again and end up with an even worse swing.

The game got more competitive. Players need every edge they can find.

That's not to say you can't be seduced by things and go too far down the rabbit hole. That's largely what prompted this thread: .

Tiger has been playing "golf swing" a teeny bit more (and did so too in 2013, so unlike basically anyone else he still has the talent/skill to win five times and player of the year while doing it) than playing "golf," IMO. I believe Chris will help him to get away from that.

Sean was supposed to be that new-agey mentor type. I generally agree, but at the same time, you have no idea how much "mechanics coaching" Chris is going to do, and how much "let's play golf" Chris is going to do.

And… Tiger's always gotten angry at poor shots. That's not new.

We might as well call this Foley 2.0-- maybe iacas can provide a better picture than this ( crossing my fingers, hoping and praying), but I'm afraid it is over if this is true.

I think Sean got a little stuck in failing to step back and re-assess. With better players you often have to re-assess the player constantly. They're so close to perfect (for them) that something can go from being a -1 on the scale to a 1 on the scale (0 is perfect) without you really noticing that it's particularly important to constantly re-assess. I think Sean may have gotten a little stuck, and sought out mechanical stuff a bit more, than Chris will tend to do.

But I have no way of knowing , of course. These are just my best guesses having spent a little time with them, and having observed Tiger, etc.

Interested in hearing from those who are familiar with Como's instruction methods on what they believe will be focus.

As I said above, I believe Chris will give him some little things to help or keep in mind, some small feels that change the mechanics subtly, and then focus largely on playing golf on the golf course rather than playing golf swing quite so much.

I didn't knew that Chris know about 5SK - what a great argument to promote the clinic down here, right @iacas ? - but I would like to ask this, to a tour player and someone like Tiger, let's just suppose that Chris only knew about 5SK, what Keys would be the one a tour pro should focus?

Not having the in depth knowledge that iacas probably does, I would assume that keys 4 and 5 to control the flight of the ball would be most important since the rest of their keys are probably exceptional as a tour player.

I got the answer here. Keys 4 and 5.

New York tabloids, doing what they do, stirring up sh*t. Let's just sit back and see what happens and enjoy the show, mu'kay?

Quote:
Como, said the caddie, is “way worse than Foley, way too technical. This guy will try to get Tiger a putting coach, a statistician, a green reading guy, etc. It’s his worse choice ever. He can turn a guy from an athlete into a golf geek.”

Woods said he was introduced to Como by his good friend and former Stanford teammate Notah Begay, and that he’s been working with him “about a month."
