I usually carry about 6-12 balls. I've been pretty good lately at keeping them in play, but I usually lose one or two a round.

Carry 2 sleeves of real balls and countless garbage ones (plenty of room in the old staff bag)

There is very little in between, I often play with one ball and often end up using 4 - I am either on or off while playing.

It depends on the time of year.

Most of the year I have six balls in one pocket of my bag along with an "emergency" backup sleeve in the side pocket for when I inevitably forget to put more balls in my bag and run out after a while.

During the high school golf season my bag is overflowing with golf balls. I ended up with nearly three full dozen ProV1's in my bag for the state tournament (which was a bit to lug around the long desert style course) just because the coach gave us a sleeve before each tournament round and I only lost 2 balls all season long.

As to how many golf balls I use in a "normal" round, the answer is 1-2. I usually use the same ball for my entire round, and continue using that ball until I either cut it noticeably or lose it somehow. I've gone as many as 10 rounds using the same ball before that happened, and I've also had it happen where I sliced the cover on a greenside bunker shot the first hole I use it. If the paint is scuffed that's fine, but once the cover is beat up I replace it.

"Pro" tip: If you work at a golf course (especially one with taller grass or a driving range right next to a fairway), you'll soon have a shag bag overflowing with premium balls of all brands that you can practice or play with!

I keep two sleeves of new and a half dozen shag balls for the water holes. I'm reminded of that one real expensive round. By 15 I felt like I was in a video game losing a ball in the woods and finding someone else's lost ball tossing that on the fairway and playing that. I stopped keeping score on 11.

Most are performance balls.

WTH is a "performance ball"?

Wow you guys carry lots of balls, I assume most of you don't walk and carry your bag (extra balls sure get heavy)

I just carry 3, I usually don't lose balls. At least not 3 in one round. If I lose 2, I just concentrate more :-)

The higher the handicap the more balls are being carried around.  You don't wan't to run out. :-D I plan on doing more golf this year with a push cart golf so I might have to lighten up the load.

I usually carry about a dozen white ones dumped in the front pocket of the cart bag and maybe a sleeve of yellow balls tucked somewhere in the bag.  The balls found get thrown in the bag and removed when I get home.  I do seem to find a lot of Pro V1's about 200 yards out and to the right.  They look good but that doesn't mean they will play great.  I did hit one on the next tee and litterly blew the cover off the ball.  I'm hesitant on using anything found on the course for full swings from now on.  Most of my lost balls are ones that I see land just off the fairway or are concealed in the fall leaves.   When playing alone, I give them a good look but they just don't want to be found.  I have noticed that better players find any ball better than noobs.  Or it's a case of moving on because people are behind me and I don't be holding anybody up.

I walk and usually carry couple of sleeves and about 10 used balls. I usually play used balls in casual rounds unless I have a bet going.

I carry usually 2-4 sleeves in my bag depending on when I restock, I usually play a round with 3 balls in the cart ball holder.  I usually don't lose too many balls.  I'll usually take a ball out of play if its scuffed or played more than 3 rounds before I lose it.

I usually have 2-6 sleeves in my bag, my home course is pretty ball friendly, I can go several rounds without losing a ball at times. Last year I played around 40 rounds on my home course and lost around 2 dz balls, I can live with that. However, on the buddy trip, we usually play 6 rounds of golf, I always take 3 dz balls and I'm happy to make it home with a sleeve!

A lot.  Probably 2 sleeves of good balls.  Around a dozen balls that are mildly scuffed but still very playable.  And probably 30-40 dead balls that I have in case I want to hit about ten shots before the round because I don't have time to hit a full bucket.  I occasionally add a few crappy balls to the range pocket because I have a gigantic trash bag full of old ass dead balls.  Hilarious how awful and old some of them are.

It's still lighter than my school bag, so it's like a reprieve when I trade that for the golf bag and head out to play.

For full disclosure I wanted to add that I did not count the balls I find along the way.

If I find a ball that I think is better than the one I am using, I may start playing with it.

I will pretty much play any ball unless it is scuffed or water logged or a Nitro.

Unless its not scuffed too bad, or if I can't really tell its water logged or someone gave me the Nitro...

Well maybe if Kmart had some Nitro balls real cheap...

I normally carry 5-7 quality balls which I'm commited to using that round if needed and I have roughly 10 off the wall, not in great shape balls in another pocket, and I'll break 1 of those out occasionally if I'm not striking the ball well that day on a Par3 over water, 1 course Quail Valley #13 I play is a 134-140yd from the Whites and 155-160 from the Blacks island green surrounded by water, it can be a bit tricky lol. but as far as how many a round, my plan and hope everytime playing is to only use 1 ball, I think the most I've used in my past 2 golf seasons as been 3 and that was from poorly made shots on my part.

:offtopic: , I know, but aren't those non-conforming (i.e., illegal)?

I will start most rounds with 6-8 balls.  As a few have said, I limit the number since I walk and carry.  No need to haul a couple dozen balls around.  For a tournament I typically add 2-3 more new balls and play those.  If I ever came close to losing every ball in the bag, I think the score would be high enough to consider calling it a day.

Like a lot of TST'ers, I play a ball until it either gets a bit fuzzy or I lose it.  I probably average a lost ball every other round.

I once arrived at the course and I only had one ball rattling around in the bag.  I had cleaned the bag out and forgot to re-stock the ball supply.  The course I was about to play was not punishing but there were a significant number of holes where a poor shot might result in a lost ball, including the opening hole.  Starting with one ball was a big risk but if I managed to play a few holes, I might be able to find a few strays.  Then I recalled I had my shag bag in the car trunk.  I teed off (safely) and while the rest were teeing off I walked over to the parking lot and grabbed a half dozen shag balls. Turned out I did not need the extra supply but I think part of my decent play was a result of not stressing about losing my one and only ball.

    • I dont know if I really have a favorite, but there are two that have stuck in my mind for a very long time. #15 at Erie Golf course during the Finals of the EDGA Matchplay. Was up early and then lost a few holes in row so the match was close again. My opponent had a short putt for birdie. I hit past hole high, but 35 feet right. I drained the putt and looked over at my opponent who was in disbelief.   #8 at Whispering Woods during another year of the EDGA Matchplay. Was playing a very cocky opponent who made sure to mention on the first tee how many times he won the club championship at this course. I hammered this 30 footer that clanked off of the pin and dropped. My opponent was disgusted and that made me weirdly happy. I went on to win 5&3 or something like that, so that entire day has stayed in my memory.
    • Day 20: Did 30 minutes after getting home from work, before kid's baseball practice. This session was piecing out the new hip move in transition, doing 2-3 rehearsals from the top, and then hitting a ball from between P5/P6. Did another 45 minutes after baseball practice and dinner. Did 30 more minutes of what I did earlier, and then about 15 minutes of full swings trying to incorporate athletically.
    • Day 296: did a stack session.
