This year, in September, @mvmac and I will be holding a Ryder Cup-style tournament in the Phoenix/Scottsdale area. This event will take place at the site of Annika's 59, Moon Valley CC in Phoenix, AZ on September 10, 11, and 12.

Our sponsors for this event are:

  • PING - makers of some of the finest golf equipment on the planet.
  • Moon Valley CC - Our host course and, as mentioned above, the site of Annika Sorenstam's record-setting 59 round in 2001.
  • TRUE Linkswear - The shoe that's revolutionizing golf, with its minimalist, zero-drop, low-platform, technology and styling.
  • PURE Grips - The best grips in the world, made from PURE rubber, with easy-on, easy-off no-tape installation.
  • KickX - Makers of the KickX Tour Z Golf Ball, one of the longest, softest balls on the market today.

We've previously had some Newport Cups, but none have been as big as this. Below is the 411, or the skinny, or the deets…

What?

The Newport Cup is a Ryder Cup style event pitting a team from the western half of the U.S. under the captaincy of @mvmac against a team from the eastern side of the U.S. under the captaincy of @iacas .

We'll have three days of matches: two days of both fourball (best ball) and foursomes (alternate shot). The last day will be singles matches.

All matches will be scored as a nassau: match play with one point available for the front nine, back nine, and the total match play for a total of 18 points on each of the days. 27.5 points will be needed to win the 2015 Newport Cup.

Who?

West Side Captain: @mvmac

West Side team color: Red

East Side Captain: @iacas

East Side team color: Blue

The teams will be comprised of six single-digit handicappers each, with the dividing line between the teams being roughly the Mississippi River.

Team members will be active, well-respected members and staff. Teams will be chosen by June. There are no minimum post counts or anything like that, but we want active members of the site who are generally well liked and respected. This is not only a tournament, but a "buddies trip" of sorts. Each team will be in a house, and we'll dine together, tease each other, play together, and stay up late shooting the breeze and getting to know some of our friends a bit better.

When?

The 2015 Newport Cup will take place September 10-12 with some special events on September 9th.

Where?

The 2015 Newport Cup will take place at the beautiful Moon Valley CC , site of Annika Sorenstam's famous 59 during the second round of the 2001 Standard Register PING Championship.

Why?

Because we can! Because it's cool to have a great little tournament with some good buddies.

Some History

These aren't all of the past articles and posts (there are some forum threads too), but here's a sampling of some previous Newport Cups.

Rest assured that this year, @mvmac and I will be taking a LOT more pictures, tweeting, posting to Facebook, taking video, and more. We want to share the Newport Cup with everyone, and build it for the following year(s) as we are looking to return to doing this annually or bi-annually.

I am very excited for this. Maybe we can vlog and Game Golf some of it as well.  It will be a great time indeed.  Thanks in advance to Erik and Mike who have been working on this already for a while now.

I'm really looking forward to this. I got a bit of work to do on my swing, but very confident that I will get to where I need to be soon!

This is totally awesome. I'm not even qualified for this event and I'm excited about it. Can't wait to see some great pics/video.

Everyone who has a GG should keep track of their rounds. Though that won't work in the alternate shot very well… :D "Hey look! I shot 34 on 18 holes! I drove the green on four par fours and putted just once!" :D

Mike and I will take care of the vlogging. We will want our players worrying about playing, and having a good time.

If the goal was to have a nice record of the round, we could certainly make it work by just using one of the GG's and noting it in our accounts.  I can tag my driver on holes when Tristan is driving.

Or, we all add one of the extra tags we have to our accounts as some random club we don't carry and then just tag every shot the other guy hit with that club.

Regardless, I'm very much looking forward to this.  Mostly to finally being able to meet and play golf with guys like @cipher and @saevel25 and @jamo and @JetFan1983 (if he qualifies. :-P )

To me, it's more about the added pressure of having a camera track your every shot to be displayed for all of TST. It would very awesome to watch it live over the innerwebs, but a VLOG would work.

Wow, this is exciting just reading about it. The epicality/epacity/epicuity/epicentricity of this battle has rumblings of a Ryder cup. I can only imagine the threads following the event.

Why?  You would only lose about 50 yards on one of my drives compared to your own.  That wont matter much. ;-)

    • Day 323 - Opposite of yesterday, focusing more on taking a full backswing than anything else.
    • Day 139: worked on putting for a while. Did the two cups drill for bead.
    • It’s winter here and time hitting at my indoor place.  This year I bought and sold a few sets so I didn’t settle in on anything. For this coming season, starting now I have a choice to make.  What set would you guys use? 1.  Nike Vapor Pro irons - They are like new, hit them some last year before I had to demo other sets.  I love them, original grips, barely used so I’m almost not wanting to use them to keep their value up.  Standard LLL and standard grips. 2. Taylormade P7TW irons - Still in the box.  Got them over a year ago but had too much to hit, never used them.  Have used a set in the past and loved them.  Ended up with my own set custom fit to me -1/4”, 1 degree flat midsize grips.  These are probably not as valuable because they are still available and they are fit to me. I hate to put the Nikes away but it makes more sense to save them than the TW’s…. I dunno….
    • Day 215 (3 Dec 24) - Another very chilly day - opted to work on easy pitches in the backyard. Worked thru the irons and wedges - focused on foot position and tempo.
