Next question.

That's it.  Especially the last attribute of living in FL.

The tax thing is irrelevant, they can get that anywhere in Florida, Orlando for instance...

I'll maintain that it's all about the game, sure the ocean helps, and the high end community, but in the end the number one reason these guys are in Jupiter is because that's where the pros are, and pros want to play and practice and gamble with other pros.

I spent a lot of time in Florida when I was living in Charleston S.C..  It was way too humid for me.  Growing up in Southern California near the coast, I've gotten use to really good weather and that is a priority for me.

San Diego pretty much has everything Florida has, plus better weather, Phil Mickelson, and yes a higher cost of living and higher taxes.

Taxes aren't that big of deal for an average guy like me... But with the money the top PGA players make, I'd have to calculate the tax savings and consider the alternative of living in Florida.

I'd argue that taxes are a bigger deal for average guys.

Making 100k, filing married, taking standard deduction... California state Income tax $3,703.  http://www.tax-brackets.org/californiataxtable

$3,703 is not enough for me to move.

PGA player making 40million, let's say they have 5 million in deductions, so 35 million.  Calif. state income tax $4,617,000.  That's a lot to pay to live in Calif. vs. Florida.

Yeah... pretty tough to live on a measly 30 mil. a year.

Yeah... pretty tough to live on a measly 30 mil. a year.

Why throw away money you don't have to? Especially with what California does with the tax revenue. The public schools are terrible -- many are unusable. The roads (outside of Orange County, at least) are in terrible condition. A large fraction of the police force is more interested in writing tickets than stopping violent crime. Even subtle things, like the barbed wire on freeway signs, gets to you. This state's governments, by and large, can't get their acts together. After a while, you start to look at what you pay in state taxes as the old johnny cash routine -- throwing money down the toilet. I'm not saying everything's better in other states -- there are plenty of things in California I like. And for the difference at my salary level, I'm not moving. But for the difference when you're making professional athlete money...

You're right.  On the one hand, it makes sense that someone doesn't want to give the state their money when they know the state is just going to waste it.  One the other hand, it's hard to commiserate with someone who -- even though he pays a lot in taxes -- still brings home more money per day than I make in a year.

Jupiter is a very nice place to live overall.  Great weather (maybe a bit too warm), great beaches and great golf courses.  Plus compared to NY, you can get a lot more house for your money and it's a much lower cost of living.

To each his own.  I have never enjoyed going to Florida except for seeing my father.

Excuse my ignorance, but why is there barbed wire on the freeway signs?

To discourage the taggers.  I've seen the barbed wire in the LA area.

But does it really matter to your lifestyle if you make $10M/year? Is 13% going to change how you live? Phil certainly is worth well over $100M and he's from the San Diego area. It's obviously worth it to him. I'd make the same decision. I find Florida for the most part to be a horrible place to live. It's flat, ugly unless you are on a coast and too humid. Southern California on the other hand is beautiful, has perfect weather and has great culture. Yes it's more expensive in every way but we've covered that,

Oh, I agree completely with you that I don't quite feel sorry for them. But I also completely agree with not wanting to pay the extra when it's going to waste.

    • Day 11: did mirror work for a while. Worked on the same stuff.
    • I'm not sure you're calculating the number of strokes you would need to give correctly. The way I figure it, a 6.9 index golfer playing from tees that are rated 70.8/126 would have a course handicap of 6. A 20-index golfer playing from tees that are rated 64/106 would have a course handicap of 11. Therefore, based on the example above, assuming this is the same golf course and these index & slope numbers are based on the different tees, you should only have to give 5 strokes (or one stroke on the five most difficult holes if match play) not 6. Regardless, I get your point...the average golfer has no understanding of how the system works and trying to explain it to people, who haven't bothered to read the documentation provided by either the USGA or the R&A, is hopeless. In any case, I think the WHS as it currently is, does the best job possible of leveling the playing field and I think most golfers (obviously, based on the back & forth on this thread, not all golfers) at least comprehend that.
    • Day 115 12-5 Skills work tonight. Mostly just trying to be more aware of the shaft and where it's at. Hit foam golf balls.
    • Day 25 (5 Dec 25) - total rain day, worked on tempo and distance control.
    • Yes it's true in a large sample like a tournament a bunch of 20 handicaps shouldn't get 13 strokes more than you. One of them will have a day and win. But two on one, the 7 handicap is going to cover those 13 strokes the vast majority of the time. 20 handicaps are shit players. With super high variance and a very asymmetrical distribution of scores. Yes they shoot 85 every once in a while. But they shoot 110 way more often. A 7 handicap's equivalent is shooting 74 every once in a while but... 86 way more often?
