I'm curious to see how the community goes about defining iron length because I'd guess the criteria people use to define those terms are different.

I'm also curious to see if people are more inclined to be general in their definitions or not.

I voted the closest to my definitions: 1-4 long, 5-7 mid, 8-PW, UW, AW or whatever the manufacturer wants to call it, short. If it's a "wedge" that came with your iron set, it's most likely built like the rest of the irons in your set and less like true wedges, so I consider them short irons. I think most people play a PW that would really be considered more of a 10 iron.

I voted the same way.  Most sets today include a PW and some of the GI sets also include a gap wedge which I would consider short irons.

I don't get too caught up in it, but since you ask, I'd call my 4 and 5 long irons, 6-8 mid irons, and 9, pw, uw short irons.

I don't really worry about what they are called except when rehashing in the 19th hole after the round - an iron is an iron... unless it's a wedge. ;-)

I don't even carry what I call long irons any more, although I used to carry all the way up to the 2 iron.  Now my longest is the 5 iron, a mid iron in my book (2 hybrids have replaced my long irons).  The short irons start with the 8 iron.  Short irons only go through PW (because the modern PW is about the loft that a 9I used to be), then the rest are wedges.

This is not really a matter of personal opinion. You are way off. Are you seriously calling a 9 iron a mid iron? It's bad enough to call an 8 iron a mid iron. A 6 iron is not a long iron. Have we reached the point where traditional definitions are just ignored and people make stuff up like this kind of thing? Hearing the term "tee box" is bad enough. Now this? long - 1234 mid - 567 short - 89 and wedges

Short Richard, if I hit my 9 iron 140yds then yes FOR ME it is a mid iron. This IS a matter of personal opinion little rich. Now why don't you go lay down in the litter box with that Ugly ass cat.

I'll do that if you do a little research on golf terms, tradition and history. The terms relate to shaft length. They are not related to short, mid or long distances.

I consider 5 and above to be long irons. 6-7 are my mid-irons. 8-PW are short irons.

I think of my PW as a 10 iron more than I think of it as a wedge.

Shorty was the only one to mention the One & Two irons, which many players back in the day would play.

He is dead on with " The terms relate to shaft length."

Not so - I mentioned the 2 iron long before he came on the thread. ;-)

Gentlemen, are we really resorting to calling each other names because we disagree on what to call your 9 iron?

I call my 5 iron Justin Bieber. Now, rail on me and get out your frustrations if you must!!!!

    • The term I hear most often is "double teeing" which means the course/club has starting times from both the #1 and #10 tee.  I have encountered this many times and we know if we are the first group off #10, we may well get to #1 and have to wait because there are groups still with tee times yet to tee of #1.  In most instances, where the course/club has a starter, he normally explains this situation.  In this case, the pro advised what you would could/would encounter making the turn to #1.  And, that is exactly what happened.  Probably would have been wise to talk to the pro after playing back 9 and ask when you could go off #1 since apparently that club does not double tee.   Regardless, the outburst towards the other group was uncalled for.  And, I don't blame the member for being upset.  As a member of a private club, you are responsible for the actions of your guest.  I have played many times as a guest in the UK and I am pretty damn sure my host was responsible for my actions while at the club.  I know at the clubs I have belonged to here in the US, that is the way it is.  As a matter of fact, the member may find himself being brought before management and facing possible suspension.  So, I don't blame him for being upset.  However, as the host, he really should have stepped up and put a stop to the OP's actions.  OP makes this statement "I now understand that standards are different on the "private course." But I'll take those lessons to the muni, too."  No, the standards are not different.  You, sir, seem to be just a bit hard headed and belligerent, even if you are college professor...which possibly explains a lot.   JMHO
    • Day 32: worked for about 10 minutes on my drill. Filmed it as well for a check in. I think it’s slightly better but still seeing some issues.
    • Day 44 (26 Dec 25)  -  played in the Friday men’s shootout with a twist - used the Toney Penna persimmons and MacGregor blades - had a blast playing these clubs.  They really help in zoning in on making solid ball contact.  Scoring was solid - had several looks at birdie and had a few par saves.  Overall a day of focused course management.
    • Day 2: 2025.12.27 Eighteen holes at Kauri Cliffs. Focusing on trying to keep flex in right leg during backswing.
    • Day 136 12-26 Had a different practice planned today but life happened. Worked on "wide to wide" and still working on remaining flowy. Starting the club head in front of the ball as a drill, is helping with the flow of the swing.
