There will be five different models of Titleist's new 716 irons. (Jonathan Wall/PGA TOUR)

GAINESVILLE, Virginia — Sticking with its consistent two-year product cycle, Titleist gave players in the field at Quicken Loans National their first look at the new 716 iron lineup on Monday morning that consists of five models: AP1, AP2, CB, MB and T-MB.

The Tour-only release is part of Titleist's tour seeding and performance validation process that gives tour players the opportunity to test the final product — roughly 20 sets were shipped to Robert Trent Jones Golf Club — and potentially put the new irons in play.

John Peterson and Jason Bohn tested the irons on Monday and left the range with new sticks in the bag. Peterson, who tested 716 MB and 716 T-MB (3- and 4-iron) confirmed via Twitter that the 716 MB's were going straight in the bag.

It's going to be a couple of months before they're released to the general public, but I'm definitely looking forward to trying them out.

I gave the 714 AP2's a long look before I went with the Mizuno 850 Forged.  AP2's are nice and I like the look of these even more than the 714's.

I believe the T-MB's are the replacement for the 712U.

From that picture, the A2 looks awfully busy. Not saying it won't look nice in person, but that's not a very flattering picture.

I agree. I have never been a fan of how Titleist irons look.

Came in here to disagree but now I realize you're talking about the AP2. Whatever, i don't have a strong opinion there, but I loooove the MBs. If only I didn't suck ;)

I don't like the "TUNGSTEN" on the toe. The CB 714 irons look perfect to me, so the 716s are a big step back. I know that's an AP2 iron, but the CB is the same way.

Also, does the tungsten weighting really make that much of a difference?

I was pleased to see the CB's. I'm still gaming my 710's but am looking for a new set in the spring. I'm not super sold on the look of the new titleist irons, so I'm actually leaning towards the Ben hogan irons that came out this year. Price isn't an issue considering I play a set of irons for about 7-8 years before switching.

Someone remind me, when does Titleist normally release clubs to the public? I am headed down to the Oceanside Facility in October... wondering if I could get my hands on these.

I was told they will be in stores the end of October into early November.  Stores should get their heads and shafts for fitting in the next month or so (I know they got the heads for the new Ping irons already) so you might be able to get fitted and preorder sooner.

Going to a media day at Titleist on Wednesday so I'll confirm when they're coming out.

Got to hit the new irons today. Not allowed to get into much detail yet but Titleist has done a really nice job with the 716 line. Best irons they've ever come out with IMO.

Any idea when they are coming out exactly? Will I be able to get my hands on them if I get fitted at Oceanside in October?

If they have a glowing review from you then I am super excited about them. Always thought Titleist made really nice stuff.

Available 10/23. I would assume you'd be able to get fit for them at Oceanside in October. Wouldn't make sense for them to fit you for the 714 line around the same time they're releasing the new stuff. Even if they did, the transition would be seamless. If you're fit for 714 AP2's, then the 716 AP2 is still going to fit you best.

    • Is it? I bought the Stack radar to replace my PRGR based on what Stack told me! When I am swinging for speed, the PRGR would miss 50%-80% of my backswings due to a higher speed. The stack seldom misses those- at least for me.
    • As an analyst by nature, I would like to compare the scores under both systems. It is something we can easily do if we have the data. I actually thought the new system was less fair to those whose game was on the decline - like mine! Old: Best 10 of last 20 scores with the .96 multiplier. Course handicap excluded course rating and overall par. New: Best 8/20. Course handicap includes course rating -par. My understanding is Stableford caps scores at Net double bogey like stroke play. If so, handicap should be slower to rise because you are only using 8 versus 10 scores. If I am missing something, I am curious enough to  want to understand what that may be. My home course tees that I play are 72.1/154 now. My best score out here is 82. When my game started to decline, my handicap didn’t budge for 13 rounds because of good scores in my first 8! I know I am an anomaly but my handicap has increased almost 80% in the past few years (with only a few rounds this year). For a few months I knew I was losing every bet because my game was nowhere near my handicap. I suspect I have steamrolled a few nuances but that shouldn’t matter much. When I have modeled this with someone playing the same tees and course, one good round, or return to form, will immediately reduce the handicap by some amount.
