Best loved of all time, that is.

I (like most British and European fans, I guess, who grew up in the 70s/80s) will never forget Seve Ballesteros. The flamboyant (reckless?!) way he played, the genius recovery shots, the sheer fact (in the absence, until Lyle and Faldo came along) that here was "one of ours" handing it back to the Americans, who had so totally dominated the 1970s.

Just to prove that this isn't entirely about me being Eurocentric, I think my second favourite player of all time was Payne Stewart. And yes, maybe part of that was the quirky dress sense. But he always seemed to be the, I don't know, rebel hero, winning majors as he did from under the noses of Mike Reid or Scott Simpson (who I'm sure were nice guys but, you know, seemed to be more ... straight-laced).

Yours?

There's just something about Ernie Els that makes me love the dude.  I'm fairly young so I haven't watched him long but my dad has always been a big easy fan so I guess that just rubbed off on me

when i was a teenager, i really liked bruce lietzke and cheered for him... i liked that he kind of showed up every now and then, never bothered to practice, hit that slice over and over, and won enough...

This is an interesting question. Modern era, I'd say probably Kuchar or Zach Johnson. Those guys just seem like good people. All time, I'd say Jimmy Demaret. Love hearing stories about him; there's a funny photo of him and Hogan sipping from the same milkshake that I really like.

Phil has been the guy I pull for above all others for the past 20 years. Jordan has supplanted him and Rory is right with Phil now.

Never watched Seve or Couples in their prime but they sure do seem to be loved a lot. I probably would not of liked Seve . Sounds like he was a magician on the course but possibly to arrogant?idk. A golf buddy said he hated Duffner and I quit calling him to golf. I just can't get over it.

Arnold Palmer comes to mind.

That was the first that came to mind for me too. I've always thought, that I'd rather play a round of golf with Nicklaus, but I'd rather have a beer with Arnie.

Phil is my guy too.  I can't help but root for him when he's in contention.  He always seems to have a good time and enjoys the fans.  I can see Jordan and Rory replacing Phil when he moves on to the Champions Tour or retirement.

Another vote for Ernie Els. I love his tempo. I like that his wife isn't a super-model. The fact that one of his kids has autism seems to me an indication that he would have a well developed sense of compassion.

Steve Stricker or Matt Kuchar. I am finding myself really pulling for Spieth lately though.

Seve

Daly

Monty

Ernie

Lefty

Arnold

Jack

DL3

Greg Norman

these are just the ones i could think of off the top of my head that always have had the " following "  for one reason or another, and usually its because people find a reason to associate something to them... usually it's something that makes them actually human and not seem like they are super human

It is what it is

    • Day 444 - 2025-12-18 Light day of hotel room work. GEARS Summit v2.0 today. Good day.
    • Day 38 (18 Dec 25) - got out in the backyard with grandson this afternoon.  We got into a little game of pitching the ball from about 25yds to a target point just off the asphalt lane behind the backyard.  Goal - just clear it with a quick hop and stop.  Focused on using the wedge swing motion I was talking with the course pro yesterday….smooth and thru just bruising the grass.  In addition to a concentrated focus on technique, it also called for a quiet mind locked in on target point.  Rehearsed this with both the 50° and 55° wedges.
    • I listened to the Shaun Webb one about the swing coach app. Sounds like a great thing and will (hopefully) be very useful for me. I do think the hosts are underestimating where AI could be in a few years. Right now it's just regurgitating stuff that it has been told or it has scrubbed from somewhere else and a human guiding things will be quite a lot more helpful than just the AI, but it's going to keep developing and it will reach the stage where it's figuring this stuff out on its own. Time will come when it will have you do a TPI style screen and take various height/arm length/leg length etc. measurements, have you tell it some history and your time constraints and goals and what not and it will watch a video of your swing face on and DTL and it will know exactly what you need to work on.
    • I found it entertaining, but the announcing was lousy.  How did the measuring on the final shot start with Rory being closer and being told he won, and then with no explanation it turns out Scottie won?  Weird.
    • Day 128 12-18 Worked on rotation and getting to lead side. Still working on the flow feeling while doing that. Recorded swings.
