As I got older I lost some swing speed. Thus I also don't hit the ball as high as I need with my mid to long irons. The thing that helped me the most in the last 10 or so years is the hybrids. The ones that allow you to hit the ball high and land it softly on the greens. Most of the places I play have firm greens and it is imperative to hit it high or spin it into the greens. Hybrids are so much easier to hit and most are more forgiving that an iron. The other great club to come into golf in the last twenty years is the big titanium drivers. The driver was always my weak point through the years. Now the driver is one of the stronger clubs in the bag.

I made the switch from the 2 through 6 irons to 2 through 6 hybrids and pushing 64 I am as long as I was 15 years ago.  The 460cc driver and low compression balls would be next in order as far as improving my game using equipment.

Come on guys, obviously good instruction is more effective than new equipment, but that's not what @stealthhwk was asking.

Put me in with the rangefinder guys.

I feel like every new toy I've got in the last few years has helped some ... Fitted driver, fitted irons, fitted putter, rangefinder, wedges ... But I agree with Phil that if I had to pick one, I'd go with the the fitted driver. :) P.S. ... Instruction is not equipment, people. ;)

Same for me, all the new toys help a bit.  I'd say a rangefinder and 38" counter balanced putter would be tied for what has helped me most.

Saw something about single length irons a while back. At first, i thought it was some kind of joke. But the more i thought about it it seemed like a brilliant idea to me. Those really helped your game?

Without a doubt the SL irons are the best thing I've ever done. Shot 69 last time out and missed 5 putts. Eight approach shots within 10 feet. The course was only 6300 yards but soaked so it was playing longer. There a several threads on Single Length irons, especially since Dechambeau won the NCAA and US Am. I like my Garmin S1. That has helped a lot. Before the Garmin, I would judge my approach shots based on the 150 marker (or 100) and add or subtract a few yards based on the color of the pin (or pin position). Now I frequently pull a different club than I would in the past based on what the GPS says. I'm sure a range finder would be even better but I don't think I'd like to pull that out on every shot. When they build one into a watch, then I might buy one.

Wow!!! Thats great! If i shot a 69, im not even sure what would happen. I shot 82 and 83 on a 4600 yard course with a par of 66 and i still dont believe that and i was there lol.

+1 with Vangator on the SL irons.

The biggest impact, even if not he quickest transition but well worth the time.

The rangefinder next...it's already in my hand as I get to my ball (it sits in the top of my trolley), and other than for longer shots when I can't reach anyway I rarely hit a shot without it.

Your ball sits in the top of your trolley? :-) I assume a trolley a push or pull cart? A buggy is what you ride in? Over here a trolley is a street car (as in "Clang, Clang , Clang went the Trolley"). A buggy is what you put a baby in (often called a stroller).

Once you hit a certain score, you change your expectations always looking for Nirvana (which you rarely ever achieve). My next goal is a plus handicap. Hard to achieve with my limited practice time. When I retire, which should be a few years from now, I probably won't have the ability to achieve it.

A Bushnell laser range-finder to dial in the distance on scoring clubs from 150 yards and closer.  The range finder also opened my eyes to a need for wedges to cover distances 110 and closer.

For me, the Bushnell range-finder has been the most important golf implement I've purchased in the past 2 seasons.  Having EXACT yardages and knowing how far you hit clubs is so important.  The Bushnell helped me understand yardages for each club.  Now, I shoot a pin distance, choose the correct club and hit with confidence.  My distance control from 150 and closer has never been anywhere near as good as it is today.

Ping G Fairway woods - 5 and 7 woods
Callaway X-Hot #5 hybrid; Old school secret weapon
Ping G #6-9 irons; W and U wedges
Vokey 54 and 58* Wedges
Odyssey Versa Putter

That SAM Puttlab analysis machine/device really opened my eyes to my cr@p putting stroke. Wish I had one of those at home.

Bulls eye putter (the old old kind)

My dad took away my favorite putter because he said my putting stroke was getting lazy.  Yes I recently started missing putts I normally wouldn't have but couldn't figure out where it was.

So he forced me to putt for 2 weeks straight with this old bulls eye.

It was / is the most unforgiving, god forsaken block of metal, that helps me maintain my hands and putter swing.  Its a love / hate relationship but it works well for me.

Dropped the 5W and 4i.....added 3H and 4H.....big difference

Interesting. Ive been contemplating the same kind of move. I normally play with just hybrids and irons. With no time for practice i can only maintain one swing at a time so ive chosen the steeper iron swing cus probably 85% of golf shots are hit with an iron. Been thinking of adding a 3 hybrid and dumping drivers and woods. And after birdie on a 523 yard par 5 with nothing longer than a 4 hybrid who needs longer clubs that can lead to blowup holes?

I must be weird. A year ago, a buddy gave me a 19-degree hybrid and I've tried to hit it a number of times. It has failed to subplant the 5W in my bag. Too many tops or slices with it.

I think another greatly under rated benefit of the range finder for a mid to high handicapper is the ability to see the green and approach area through the scope.  It was like having the ability to walk up and check out the green and approach areas, and let you truly see what you are trying to avoid and where you want to be.

The hybrids are much easier for me to hit, especially out of the rough.  3H is 19* and 4H is 22*....same club head....same shaft.

    • "Positional" shots? How do we do that? I am using the V3 and edit on my laptop.
    • No, I'm not talking about "six footers uphill, slightly right to left." I'm going to indulge myself and talk about my favorite putts that I've ever hit. In no particular order… #9 at Whispering Woods The hole was cut middle left, and I was back right with about 40 feet to the hole, and six to eight feet of break. @DrizZzY (he'll be a semi-common theme here) was about 25' from the hole and he said "Do you need me to mark that" as his ball was really close to my line. I saw the line really, really clearly and, like the cocky jerk I am, said something like "no, leave it. I think I have to just miss your ball to make this." I saw my ball as having to pass within a few millimeters of his ball… and going in the middle. Well, I hit the putt, and as it passed his ball missing it by maybe 1.5cm… I said "ahhhhh, pulled it a little…" and… the ball fell in the left-center of the hole. I smirked at Sculley and he just said "you're such an ass." 🤣 I know I said in no particular order, and that might be true for the rest… but this one is clearly tops on my list. I saw the line so clearly, it was a touchy, delicate putt… and I knew I'd pulled it just that little bit, and my speed was perfect. His ball was fifteen feet from mine, and the putt broke 8'! Might be the greatest putt, given the call I made, I'll ever hit. #13 at Lawsonia Links I cared about a few rounds in Wisconsin on our 2021 trip (thanks again @cipher), and the 13th had gotten me a bit. I was in a bunker, and someone not NOT named @DeadMan had told me I could just chip a 7I out and still be fine… well, the 7I left me 250 in, so my 3W finished just left of the green… and about 10' below the green. I hit a decent pitch to 25' or so… this putt broke only about 2-3', but burying that one was satisfying as it kept my "no sixes in Wisconsin" streak alive. It was after this putt that someone said something like "You remember how you said you felt about Tiger at the 1997 Masters? That's how we feel right about now." It was one of the nicest things anyone has ever said to me. 😄 #14 at Whispering Woods Two putts are tied here. On one, Sculley and I hit tee shots to a back hole near the front of the green. I was a foot off the front, he was a few feet on. As we were getting back into the cart, I said "putting contest from here." He replied "Well, I lost." I made the 75-footer. The other time, the pin was front-left. I was mostly middle right, barely on the green, putting across it from about 65 feet. The putt broke a good ten feet. Sculley was short left of the hole, and for the last 20 feet of the putt, I looked at @DrizZzY and the face he made — disgust, annoyance, resignation — as the putt tracked directly toward and eventually into the hole was one of the funniest and most satisfying expressions I've ever seen on the golf course. I watched him, not my ball, for the last 15-20 feet of its roll. Sorry Sculley! #9 at Tan Tara Golf Course It was my 77th stroke in my second round of the PAT. It was a ten-footer, broke a few inches, and was destined for the bottom of the cup the instant I hit it, all to pass the PAT on the number in my first attempt. (Tan Tara is now Pendleton Creek.) #17 and 18 at The Old Course, St. Andrews On the 18th, I hit it to about four feet from about 40 yards out, up and over the Valley of Sin, from the fairway. I didn't even really consider chipping or pitching it, because who does that? Not there, not me. On #17, I had about a 15 or 18 footer, after playing a 6I from 180 that flew (on purpose) only about 90 yards, and took about 15 steps to run over humps and hollows before coming to a stop on the right portion of the hole. My caddie said "I see only one or two birdies a year on the Road Hole, so, well done." Lifetime scoring average on 17 at the Old: 3. I'll take that. Far Hole (#?), Putting Course at Streamsong Black @kpaulhus and I were screwing around. Calling out holes, and tee locations. I walked over to the fringe of the nearby green on the Black course… We putted from the fringe in case we scuffed the ground a bit. Well, I chose a putt from the fringe to the far side of the 18-hole putting course. In Google Earth, I measured the putt just now at nearly 400 feet. As in… 130 yards. I hit the stick. My ball stopped less than two feet from the hole. The other diners let out a loud shout when I smacked it, and looked way over at me and yelled out "it hit the stick!" Kyle lost that hole. And most of the other ones. 😉  Some stats: Count: 8 Shortest: 10 feet. Longest: 130 yards. Average length: ~93 feet. But, y'know… Those are my favorite putts. What are yours?
    • I have one still sitting in a box my son gave me for Christmas.  For a while, I used an app on my watch, but it drained the phone battery . We have Markers at 180 ,135 and 90M , and generally I am close enough to one of them to get a fairly rough indication of how far.  Also, for a while now ,I walk into town and back at weekends, approximately 5 mile round-trip . I’ll start a walk on my watch, and on the way home when the watch ticks over to .10/.90 etc I’ll pick a street light ,lamp post , sign , and guess how far, normally anything up to about 100 m, I have now got very good at estimating distances, especially up to 50 or 60M.
