What'd You Shoot Today?

Recommended Posts

Today started off as a d-range day meandering through my bag of clubs. This is all I have been doing the past few days. Just d-range work. Had the iron bag with me.

As has happened before, a golf buddy showed up and asked me to join him for a round.

We played the Boulder Creek course, which is a pretty wide open course. By that I mean, a person would have to hit a really, really bad shot, to not have playable next shot

Shot my usual bogey/par round for an 84 (42/42/28 putts)  I didn't putt that well. I just had some short putts after some nice chip shots.

No three putts, and no 6s.

A good round to start the new year off with.

72, 74, 70, 73, 70, 69, 72, 70, 74 since Dec 20th.

158 posted rounds for the year. Doesn't count scrambles, member/guest tournaments, so was closer to 170.

75 for net 71. 3 double bogeys in it.
122 degrees Fahrenheit today in Albury - Australia.

I played in the first group this morning at 7:08 am.
Temp was a chilly 82 degrees Fahrenheit.

Had my chances to go really low but 2 bad club selections

cost me 4 shots.

Remember its just a game.....more serious than life and death.

After taking some time off (sciatica was acting up), went out and shot an 81 on Thursday and had a 77 yesterday. Supposed to have rain all day today, so not sure if we'll get the round in or not today.

Shot a 94, and it was a bad 94. Four triples and a quad. Seven penalty strokes were unhelpful. Won't even bother counting GIR/nGIR. Did make two nice birdies, so I left the course with something positive to dwell on for the next round.

73, putting was horrible.

Three-putt on #1, four putt for bogey on #9 and missed five other putts inside 6ft for birdie.

Again, my brother and I played today. I had high expectations after my front-nine 44 on Thursday. Instead of the 41 that I called, I shot 50. Bleeehhhhh. Started with an OB tee shot on #1, and everything went downhill. Just one par today, on the par-5 ninth, and even then I screwed up a 4-footer for birdie. He shot a 58, including an 11 on the fourth hole after he went with a 3W from 150 yards, after I told him it was gonna go OB if he hit it solid. He ignored me, and appeared frustrated as we walked to the green. There’s something that my brother also did that I was really irritated about. Now, y’all probably know from my posts on this forum that I play golf for two reasons: just because I enjoy it and because I want to be good, really good. Remember that second reason. It’ll come into play soon. On the 8th hole, I was laying two in a greenside bunker. Remember that really bad bunker shot I told you about? Here it was. Skulled it over the green to the worst spot I could possibly be in, especially with the pin back as it was. Let’s just say, unless you’re 7’ or taller, you’re not gonna see the green, only the pin. I opted to hit not a wedge shot, but a bump-and-run hybrid. Attempt number one: came up a few inches short, and rolled down to my feet. My brother started laughing. A little annoyed, I tried the same shot again. Same thing. He started laughing even harder. I was WAY beyond annoyed at this point. This is where the second reason I mentioned before comes in. Being that I’m serious about the game, and he’s not as serious, I exploded, “Stop laughing! NOW!!” He immediately stopped. I regretted it as soon as I yelled. I apologized after we had hit our tee shots on the last, and it took a while, but he forgave me. I guess that I was just mad in the moment, because by the time we hit our last tee shots, all anger had gone.

Here’s my evaluation for today:

Long Game: 1.5. Although I hit a good drive or two, most put me in a really bad spot where I was gonna be lucky to make par.

Mid Game: 3. Mostly direction was the problem, otherwise this rating would be a 3.5 or maybe even a 4.

Short Game: 3.5. Some good chips, but more mediocre or bad chips cancel the good ones out.

Putting: 3. Nothing went right today, except two-putt bogeys and doubles from very makeable distances. The longest putt I made was about a foot. The only reason I give this a 3 is because there was only one three-putt, which came from a really tough 50-foot downhill putt. Otherwise, it would’ve been a 2.

Recovery: 3. One good recovery shot on the 4th, probably worth a 4 on my scale, but a really bad bunker shot on the 8th brings that score down.

99 on Saturday from the whites and a WET course. 50 on front and 49 on back. It had rained most all night and part of the morning. Everywhere we walked was smushy had to be extra careful. Tee'd off with no practice shots at all. It was a fun round though.

A few bad green approaches resulted in some three putts and one two shot bunker and some double-chips on the back nine. I think I was tiring down and I hacked some chips. Missed two birdies! Uggghhhh.

Iron game was fairly solid with no topping. I did have a few chunked too much dirt before the ball, but I was purposely not going to top any balls. Two bad shots from the tee on the day, but the rest were pretty solid and made most fairways. No blow out holes. Had a nice par (almost birdied) on last hole over water which felt really nice.

I counted 11 strokes that should have been avoided. Hindsight is torture!

Today’s round was hilarious!  It started just fine. Front 9: 1 over thru the first 4 holes. No biggy! The next 5 holes off the tee I had no clue. Hole 5 a par 3 playing 170.  Pull hooked my 6 iron OB.  What the @&#?  Managed a 4. Next hole pushed the driver right, hit a tree had to punch out, made a 5. 7th hole pull hook left, I mean a big diving toe hook! PW over the green, manage a 5.  Now I’m 4 over. Now I’m going nuts!  Driver has totally left me.  Finished the front with an uncharacteristic 42.  Back 9:  my thought on the 10th tee was that I needed to get some gas for my blower after I got home.  All I can say is I just kept swinging that driver and I kept pushing and pulling it.  But....my irons and putter came alive. When I missed a green (only 4) I still managed par. 8 straight pars, one a sandy par and finished the 18th with a birdie for a one under 35.  Go figure!  I have a tee time in the morning tomorrow, I hope it rains.

Mid-90s at High Meadow Ranch in Magnolia. Have not hit my driver well lately. Irons are above average, chipping has been solid, and putting cones and goes.

Can't wait for winter to be over. Made the choice on the drive home to go play today. It wasn't particularly cold or windy, but the sun sets too dang early. Got to the course at 4, got to the turn at 4:45. Decided to not make the turn, not because of daylight, but because I was playing solo and the ball was getting hard to see whenever I was hitting towards the sun. +5 40 on the front 9 of the shorter course here (2500 yards per 9). 2 birdies on very short par 4s, 1 double, 1 par and the rest bogeys.

Had a good day yesterday. Played with a foursome I hadn't had a chance to play with before. We all shot well. I shot a 76 (38-38). 2 birdies, 10 pars, and 6 bogeys. Just a nice easy going round.

I played one hole yesterday, I decided to go chip and putt at the course for about 45 mins. When my dad sent me a text saying he was on the way to pick me up, I asked him if I could play hole 10 and meet him down at the street (the 10th green is a short walk from the street). He said yes, so I waltzed over to the tenth hole (par-5, 445 from whites) and played it. Made a double 😑. Hit a ball OB on the second shot, couldn’t find it. Got up-and-down after a chunked wedge from ~50 yards. Not a good hole.

If we were in season, which we are not, a 9.5 differential (77 on a par 70) on the local course that mostly stays open year round. It is short so the spongy wet conditions don't hurt me too much.  I was surprised at how playable the course was with everything thawed enough to make it very much like a round in April.  Every round after Thanksgiving is a gift here in the Frozen Mitten.

A 40 on the back to match my 40 on the front yesterday. Driver head came loose between 16th and 17th tee and didnt have a tool. Topped a 4 wood off the 17th ending in a bogey. Actually flushed a 3 iron off the 18th tee which was delightful. Downhill par 4 around 270 yards. Put my 50 yard approach 35 ft from the hole and 3 putted. God I hate 3 putting

Time today for a quick 9 hole jaunt.  Many of my problems were the result of rushing myself!

Course was 32.5/105 good conditions

Shot 44, 15 putts, 5 penalty, only 25% fairways, 3 pars and 1 rather ugly double bogie.

I needed to finish prior to heading off to a full scheduled day, I tended to not take as much time just before a shot to make sure I was truly ready to swing.

    • Yes, this is the 2024 model. DSG ruined what Callaway perfected for most golfers. A darn good 3 piece golf ball. Now it's a 2 piece cheap ball. To me a 2 piece ball is fine and a 3 piece budget ball is better. I prefer a slightly harder ball, something in the 65-75 compression range that will perform similar to the old Gamer. The Titleist tru-feel is pretty good. I planned on giving Maxfli straightfli a try.
