What'd You Shoot Today?

Played a 71.9/129 6400 yard course today that I never played before and shot a 111.  Fun round with 0 GIRs, 0 pars, 9 penalty strokes.  Just really an example of when you can't get off the tee and the other parts of your game don't save you, a big number is getting put up.

Had a weird round today, 40-37-77 which is in my normal range, except I had no bogeys in 18 holes.

4 doubles, 2 birdies and 12 pars.

Started Birdie, Double, double, double and then lost a ball in the dusk on 18 for another double.

Yesterday was one of my best rounds of the year. Did bogey one and got off kinda slow going car to tee with no warm up. Was +2 through 4 but hit a 9 iron to 3 ft at 5 and made bird. Pared out on the front. Played the back extremely well. Missed a few birdie putts I want back. Missed 2 greens and didn’t get up and down but managed to finish that side 2 over. 73 for the day. Prob the best round overall all season.

Yesterday left a bad taste in my mouth. Started well, +3 through 4, but it all went downhill from there.

No. 5: Lying two in a bunker, walked off the green with seven.

No. 6: Three-putt for bogey

No. 7: Left myself with a virtually impossible chip off hardpan to a tight pin, skulled it over and made double.

No. 8: Tee shot in trees, made double

No. 9: Got no sand and all ball on a bunker shot, and made nine.

That amounts to a 51. I really didn’t hit the ball badly yesterday, but I just left myself in bad spots on the last five holes. Number six was just bad.

Today was another round at what I call my "home" course.  Was just 2 over (2 bogeys and a par) through first 3 holes.  Worst hole of the day was a snow man on #8 (a par 4), no triple bogeys though.  No lost drives, hit 9 of 14 fairways (a personal best) and the other 5 were just off the edge less than 2 yards off the short stuff.  Misjudged distances on some approaches either coming up short or overshooting.  What did I score - total of 99 (52 on front, 47 on the back).  

Side note - two days ago, I played the front 9 of this course with the missus.  She did well, a 57 from the reds with two solid pars on the two par 3's.  Me - had a 46 w/two pars, 4 bogeys and 3 doubles.   

No if I could put a solid front and back like above - would in the low 90's, knocking on the 80's.  That is what my goal is this year - to be solidly in the low 90's, knocking on the 80's.

Shot 88 in heavy fog, basically no visibility beyond 75-100 yards. Started off with a 9 on hole #1, losing my tee ball (+2) and approach (+2), and then settled in to a low event round.

For my approach shots I clubbed up 1-2 clubs and played partial swing to keep the ball lower and visible for longer, which worked really well.

Had a 6-foot birdie putt on one of my nemesis holes that lipped out.

One of those days where you see a course for the first time and struggle. Lot of tight landing areas and blind shots that made the day difficult. Hit the ball pretty well but didn’t score well. Shot 41/41 for the day. Hi light of the day was the island green 8 iron at 17 I hit right over the top of the flag to 10 ft. Missed the putt but at least the tee shot was good. Also hit one of the best drives of my season at a par 5 and got home in 2 with a 7 iron.... went on to 3 jack the green tho. Just not a good day. Maybe it’s time to bench the Sunday red and pick a new color!

Played a course I've played fifteen or twenty times so I'm really familiar with it.  Plays 6200 yards, Par 72 with a CR/Slope of 70.4/124.  I shot a 101, 50 on the front Par 37 but really fell apart on the back, shooting a 51 on the back Par 35.

Front: 1 par, 6 bogeys, 1 triple, and 1 quad.

Back: 2 par, 2 bogeys, 2 doubles, 2 triples, 1 quad.  

Putting into practice for most of the round what felt like a 70% driver swing speed, I only had 1 penalty stoke with the drive and that was because I actually swung probably too slow, made horrible contact, and hit a ground ball into some weeds.  Unfortunately, I still racked up 6 other penalty strokes - 2 when I hooked a 9 iron into the woods...twice.  This was on the hardest rated hole on the course, a narrow 347 yard part 4 that plays downhill.  I took my 3H off the tee shot which I pulled a little but still ended up on the left side of the fairway with only about a third of the right side of the green visible and the flag on the left.  Round was going well up to that point.

The most disheartening hole was the 14th, a par 4 355 yard hole with a narrow fairway, OB on the left side that has some rocks before it goes into some weeds and an elevated green from the fairway.  I hit 3W off the tee and pulled it, hit a provisional with my 3H which I'm normally straight with and pulled that even more.  I then found a ball in the left rough which had a similar mark as mine did when I hit the 3W and instead of checking it thoroughly, I presumed it was mine, hit it onto the green which I had never done.  Only walking to the next hole did I realize I hit the wrong ball so rather than a 5 (I 3 putted), I put up the max with 2 penalty strokes.  

My putting was terribad - very subpar from my normal putting.  I think I was trying too hard and juiced too many putts past the hole leaving myself longer second putts than I normally do.  So, I 3 putted five times.  Also pulled way too many irons so I'll be working to correct that.

On the plus side, hit 7 of 14 fairways and, if this can be considered a plus, I hit 2 GIRs (only a plus because I hit 0 on my last round).

Oh, definitely.  I feel like a greater percentage of the time I'm more in control of my swing.  If I can minimize hooking the ball, I think I can get more greens and I'll feel less pressure when putting which will hopefully lead to fewer 3 putts (although yesterday was an abnormally high amount of 3-putts)  I even hit a wedge on the first hole and drew the ball back. 

I also think my game management is improving. 👍

Went 35-42 yesterday for a 77. 12/18 GIR

1 bogey and 2 birdies on the front with 2 birdie lip outs from 10-15 feet, then 2 bogies and 2 doubles on the back.

Just hit a couple really poor shots on the back, kinda forgot my main swing thought of keeping my hands really close to my body and the clubhead outside of my hands during the takeaway and it cost me. 

Really like putting using aimpoint, had a 40+ footer that I read as a "3" which was a good 5-6 feet of break and it was the perfect read which gave me a tap in par. Ended up +.27 strokes gained compared to scratch on the round.

I need a little more practice distinguishing between the .5% and the 1% slopes, but I hit some really solid putts in the 10-20 foot range. 

Still looking to break par for 18 holes, and still looking to go lower than -1 on 9 holes, but if I keep improving on my aimpoint reads and continue to practice my swing thought with the irons, I'm confident both will happen soon.

36-41 for a 77 (+6) in a competition on Sunday. 

Started great, two under after eight holes. Then hit a big flier from the rough on the 9th and went to a pretty awful spot under a tree, and almost OB. A couple of hacks, a chip and two putts, triple 🙈

Back nine started nice again, even par before the last three holes and +1 for the round. Hole 16, another flier/pull from the rough and a lost ball from 165 yards. A triple again! Then one more lost ball on the last from an approach and a double.

So was playing really good for stretches but got a couple of wrong clubs / mistakes from approaches really cost me. I either should hit the fairway more or remember to take even less club from those lies next time aroud.

92,44/48, weekly golf outing. Blew up on 2 par 5’s and a par three.  Otherwise pars and bogies.  
Driver worked ok, need more distance. Short game bailed me out on a few holes where my approach shots were errant or short.

Yesterday I played Croasdaile Country Club, courtesy of a former teammate who works there. He promised me a while back that we’d play there someday, and we finally did it! He also invited another former teammate who also works there, and we had a blast.

We all played the blue tees there which are just over 6500 yards, and with a rating of 71.9/136, it’s the toughest course I’ve played. I’ll do a quick rundown of each hole:

No. 1: Two topped shots, had to make a long putt to save bogey.

No. 2: Tee shot in water, triple bogey.

No. 3: Three solid shots on the long par-5, three putt for bogey.

No. 4: Missed green, decent chip, two putt for bogey.

No. 5: Tee shot in bunker, poor out, three putt for double.

No. 6: Topped second shot into creek, on in five, two putt for double.

No. 7: Topped second shot, but good comeback, two putt for bogey.

No. 8: Two solid shots just right of green, up and down for par.

No. 9: Solid hole, missed green, two putt for bogey.

FRONT NINE SCORE: 48

No. 10: Three okay shots, up-and-down for par.

No. 11: Tee shot in bunker, horrible out, triple.

No. 12: Tee shot in trees, punch out, two putt for double.

No. 13: Three solid shots just short of green, up and down for par.

No. 14: Poor tee shot, solid chip, two putt for bogey (I hate this hole, 180-yard par-3, steeply uphill)

No. 15: Tee shot in trees, second in bunker, good out, two putt for bogey.

No. 16: Poor tee shot, decent second, another up and down par.

No. 17: Long drive, solid shot to green, three putt for bogey.

No. 18: Near-shanked second shot, somehow made a quad.

BACK NINE SCORE: 48

TOTAL SCORE: 96

One of my former teammates projected an 86 for me before we teed off. I was hoping for a low-90s score at worst, but I’m not too disappointed with my 96. On one of the toughest courses in Durham, from the blue tees, on a day when I didn’t have my best stuff, I shot 96. Wasn’t too thrilled walking off 18, but when I thought about it on the drive home, I decided it wasn’t that bad.

One of my former teammates shot 74. He made birdies on the third, fourth, and eighth holes and shot a one-under 35 on what we consider to be the tougher side. However, he had a birdieless back nine, making all fours on the last four holes to shoot 39. My other former teammate didn’t have his best game either, shooting 90 (his average score is around 82-84). But it was a fun day of golf.

What a horrible start to a round, 3 triples and a quad with 5 penalty strokes on the opening four holes to shoot 29 over par 16.  Biggest issue was just not being in rhythm yet.  Pushed my first drive OB way to the right on the first hole, hit a low duck hook which skirted just OB to the left on the second hole, third hole slightly pushed my tee shot right into the woods OB, fourth hole I slightly pulled my tee shot left OB and also thinned a wedge OB so that was fun.  I finally got a par on the next hole but then found myself go OB right when I hit a line drive to right field but was able to "salvage" double bogey.

I wish I had started the back 9 better to give myself a chance of shooting in the 90's but unfortunately, after a good tee shot to start the 10th hole, I hit a 6 iron on a shot where the ball was above my feet and which came out a little low but it hit the green but which bounced off.  I couldn't find the ball and there were white stakes so, I was annoyed by that and put up a double bogey.  Then I had a terrible hole on the par 3, 215 yard 11th where i mishit my 3H for 145 yards, pulled a LW, and then for some reason hit what should have been a short chip a mile, then chipped past the hole and 2 putted for a 6.  Starting the back 5 over really discouraged me from being able to "save" my round but I did have a decent rest of a round.   

Second time playing this course, the first being a week and a half ago.  I improved on the 110 score so that was a plus.  I also found myself pulling the ball but was able to self correct midway through the front 9 so that was good, too.  I also worked on my alignment and after the first few holes, I was generally happy with the start line of my full swings.  Another thing I was happy about what my game planning, pretty much avoiding most trouble. 

Playing tomorrow at a course I've never played before so we'll see how it goes!
