How far would you travel by car for 1 round of golf only?

I live 45 minutes from the course I play quite often as a single.  No need to drive any farther.

Back when I first started playing (1976), we had a nice day on a Saturday in February in Jamestown NY.  I had golf fever.  I was working that Saturday, so a couple of buddies and myself decided we were going to play on Sunday.  When we woke up, it had snowed overnight, so we decided to drive south until we found a course with no snow.  We finally ended up in Pittsburgh.  That was 3 hours and about 150 miles south.  Played 27 holes in cold weather and turned around.  Wouldn't have done it for myself only though.  I would have just woke up and slit my wrists.

You drove up there and then they made you play as a single; kind of a sad story.

No. Obviously I didn't get the single part of the question. We played in foursomes.

Depends on the course, but probably 2 hours each way, maybe further if course warranted it.

I would drive up to 90 minutes one way for a regular course, I have plenty of choices near me.  However, for the chance to play TPC Sawgrass (Stadium), I would drive the ~3 hours, one way, to get there.

It didn't say in the OP, but I think you mean in 1 day right. I have driven 6+ hours but stayed a night or two. In a day the longest I have driven is 3 hours one way.

Right, the only purpose of the drive is for 1 round of golf and then back home. Just like you were traveling to the course 10 minutes away.

In January? 20 degrees below freezing? Snow up to my nuts?

I'd be willing to drive pretty far!

Yeah, I think the colder ones climate the farther they are willing to drive.

I did a few 1.5 to 2 hours drives (3-4 round trip) this summer just to play newer courses north of here.

Really happy I did.  4 courses, 3 were really worth the trip. 1 of those was outstanding.

I'll look for a few more this next season too.

I plan on playing Arcadia Bluffs south of Traverse City, MI.   It is over 3 hours from my house.      I wouldn't usually drive that far, I believe 90 minutes would normally be max.

I drove 2 hours to play Links at Spanish Bay when I was lucky enough to be sent to San Fransciso in 2000.   When I lived in NJ I used to drive 90 minutes to play some places.

Kind of a sliding scale.   Augusta?  Drive 24 hours straight.  For most courses I think 2 hours is the max to make a day out of it.

My brother turns 50 this year, and that is reason enough for me to get in another round at Arcadia, it is always worth the 3+ hour drive.

The "worst" drive I've probably taken was to make a 8:30am tee time at Arcadia.

The year was 2004 and my best friend from Texas was up for the weekend; Friday Ryder Cup at Oakland Hills, Saturday 18 holes at a local track, followed by a night game at Spartan Stadium vs. Notre Dame, then getting up about 4:30 to make our tee time. I think there wasn't even an open McDonalds until we were near Ludington.

I would have to say it depends on the course. Unless it was something special, I would normally just play something close-by if I was going out as a single. On the other hand, I would get in the car right now and drive 13.5 hours, that google tells me it is, to Augusta National.

This is me. Just for a casual round by myself, 30 minutes or so max. If there is a course around that I want to specifically play, maybe a nice course but not special, maybe a couple of hours.

For Augusta, whatever it takes.

For me here in Bangalore this is not a very valid point because we can play all year round, but I would assume this would become a point when you live in a place that freezes and golf is not possible a couple of months in a year.  I would probably say 1 hour or so for me

What's in the bag

  • Taylor Made r5 dual Draw 9.5* (stiff)
  • Cobra Baffler 4H (stiff)
  • Taylor Made RAC OS 6-9,P,S (regular)
  • Golden Bear LD5.0 60* (regular)

The situation reigns supreme!!!  The course is not relevant or it MAY BE!  It just depends......I've driven nearly 3hrs south to play golf just to get out of the snow before.  If given the opportunity to play an elite course, I'd drive further for the opportunity to play a single round of golf.  It just depends on the situation!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!   There is no simple answer!!!

One winter was really bad in the mid 1990s.... my group decided to drive however far necessary to play some golf.   Unfortunately....the entire country was buried in snow so we decided to fly to Florida for a golf weekend.    LOL.....that trip never happened.   As soon as my wife got wind of this trip she wanted to go....... so the two of us did just that and flew to south florida for a week and I played golf at sunrise each morning.

Playing alone and driving home after the round?  If so, you read the OP and win the prize.

A round of golf for myself only, at an everyday course, I will drive a maximum of about 30 minutes one way.

If it's for a tournament, a special course, or to play with specific people I am willing to drive further, but there's no need to go that far if I'm just playing by myself at a regular old course.

I don't know if I'll play alone, hope not, and it's not a direct round trip. This will be part of my 50 state road trip, which I will drive 48 states. Attached is a map of the trip, starting in Los Angeles to Phoenix. The numbers between cities are the driving times (hours-minutes). Once I start in April, I won't stop until I've played all 50 capital cities. IMG_1404.thumb.JPG.3ef1acadcb20fc41859ca

    • Greg Norman reveals plan for LIV Golf teams to have their own courses LIV Golf CEO Greg Norman wants teams to follow Premier League clubs in having their own home games. Here you go. Enjoy.
    • Day 2:  I hit a bucket of balls this morning.  Not gonna lie, almost didn’t go since it was my first time going alone and it was a little intimidating.  I mostly hit with my driver (the last bit of balls was with my 7 iron).  The sun was in my face but I think the ones that had good contact with went the furthest yet (maybe 150 yards then a good roll?).  Once I switched to my 7, the first half of my balls were crap.  I’ve always hit my irons before my driver when practicing and done fine - does this make any difference or is it just because I’m so green?
    • It's likely per "category" of clubs, so irons would be one category, wedges would be a category, driver a category, fairway woods/hybrid a category, etc. They aren't going to charge you $50 per iron for a fitting. Almost all iron fittings are done with like a 6 or 7 iron, fitters don't carry full sets of every iron. So yes, if you use a 7 iron for the fitting and let's say you get fit into the P790 with a certain shaft, 1 degree flat and .5" longer than normal you would just order the full set of P790s with that shaft/lie angle/length combination and you'll be perfectly fine.
    • I think the $50 fitting price tag is per club. The clubs I am most interested in getting fitted for are irons. And I'd rather not spend a bunch on getting fitted for multiple irons. Would I be fairly safe to assume that choosing something like a 6 or 7 iron for fitting would likely relate to other lofts in the same configuration/make/model?
    • A Mevo is 500. Comes with little decals to hit balls inside too.
