You've reached professional status, would you accept a sponsorship of something you don't like?

Sellout or not?

  1. 1. You reached the status as a desirable pro golfer, would you promote something you didn't like?

    • Sure. It's all business.

    • No way. I can't promote crap I would not sell.

I always wondered if Tiger ever actually owned a Buick. :)

Tag Heuer sponsored Tiger until his situation. Now he is sponsored by Rolex. The slogan is something like, "The only watch for me." Good thing he got rid of those junky Tag Heuer watches.

I don't hold it against anyone who they endorse. It's a complicated, connected world, but an effort should be made to balance when you really need the money vs adding more to an already overflowing till.

Heck yeah. For some the window of opportunity is small. I'd add it to my pile of life changing money padding the vault to ensure I grow old wealthy.

I am on my way to work to do something I don't like right now. Sell out every day.

Dave :-)

Chances are, anyone being contacted to endorse products for compensation is a successful pro golfer.  They already have a substantial income from golf.  That should in theory at least make it easier for people to resist the temptation to endorse products they don't use, don't like or are ethically questionable.

It is obvious that some people are whores and are willing to sell anything.

If I like it and would endorse regularly before going pro I likely would. We all hav fave restaurants locally we tell people they should try, and I would do this mentality nationally in that case. Personally because of my experience with their cars, Mazda/VW if they approached me would always be a no-no. Even BMW would get a no-no despite me loving a lot of their older models.

I wouldnt be one of those people that takes anything thrown their way, like the ad equivalent of Samuel Jackson.

"Walking 18 holes is tough. It gets tougher as we get older. That's why I have Dr. Scholls gel inserts in my golf shoes. They make walking 18 holes like walking on air. (thwack - hits tee shot with dramatic pose for the camera). So next time you're at the store grab a pair. That's Dr. Scholls gel inserts."

"Walking 18 holes can make a person's feet get sweaty. That's why before a round, I spray my feet with Dr. Scholl's foot spray. It keeps my feet cool and dry while I play. And when my feet are dry, my head stays cool and in the game. (thwack - hits approach shot that lands on the green and backs up to near the hole.... never mind we had to retake that a half-dozen times). So next time you're at the store, grab a can and experience cool, dry feet all day long. That's Dr. Scholls foot spray."

I couldn't endorse a product I did not believe in or like.  Guys like Spieth and Rory have multiple options for endorsement contracts, if I was at that level I'd be selective and only put my name on products I want to be associated with.

It would have to be something I used... or if I didn't use it much, that I respected for its quality.

I'm a low self-monitor, and I would have trouble pretending something was simply mah-velous when it wasn't.

Focus, connect and follow through!

A lot of the pros out there do very little in your face advertising. Most of the time it is just using the ball, having the patch on the bag or an occasional photo shoot. You don't hear them thanking all their sponsors during trophy ceremonies. Top tier guys do more commercials but they also get higher quality products to promote which would lessen the chance for feeling like a sellout.

Most are advocating clubs which would be easy to do but if I didn't feel like the clubs were performing the way the company claimed, I would have some issues.... Especially if it is something that is not as high quality as the Zolex fueled Hammer driver...

    • Have not filmed my iron swing in years so here is a current one. Was getting pretty shut with the face and hanging back as is my tendency, so I have just been working on that.  Pretty dang happy overall with this swing but it is clearly not without flaws either.

    • I can share more details later on, but… I'm looking for someone to produce a short weekly or bi-weekly podcast covering golf (instruction/coaching) and sell the ads. Revenue splits would likely be straight 1/3 among the three of us (two podcast hosts, one producer). I produced hundreds of episodes of podcasts, so I know how to do it, I just don't want to this time around. 😄  P.S. Current idea is that the podcasts would be a tight nine or ten minutes each. We're not talking about hour-long podcasts here or anything.
    • I just hit 425 and finally played golf in New York (26th state), at Sleepy Hollow Country Club (Hole 16), which was fantastic.
