This is one passive aggressive dig at professional golf, typical of SV. i don't care what this person does, now even less.

Quote

“If you are an entertainer, it’s counterproductive from the standpoint that people stop doing anything and just sit and watch entertainers,” Scott said. “The guy serving you food at a golf tournament is in so many ways doing more good and moving the capitalist ball forward than Tiger Woods.

Oh man - you got me, lol.  I thought this was going to be an article about how I'm too old now.

It's kind of a moot point, really . .he's stuck between deciding to be millionaire golfer or a billionaire in business . . his dad did start Sun Microsystems . .it's not like he's trading tour life to go be an accountant.  Nice problem to have, lol.

Edit . .it should say:

Why America's Best Golf Prospect May Never Turn Pro - Because he's already got more money than most tour pros will ever have and he's not sure he wants to bother with the rigors of Tour Life.

That sounds fair . . .

Agree with you Steve. I really don't care what he does.

I love your title rewrite! I'd tell him just to get out of the way of players more deserving of the attempt.

If McNealy spends his twenties grinding through the professional golf tours, the opportunities in business for an extremely well-connected Stanford grad will still be there when he's 30. Heck, he could then reclaim his amateur status when he's 40, be the old guy who plays in the Walker Cup and earns the Mid-Amateur invite to the Masters every year for the next decade, then turn pro again when he's 50 when he's ready to retire from the white-collar world and join the Champions Tour.

Doesn't need the money and probably doesn't want to work as hard as a pro golfer does to earn his way onto the Tour.  It's great he has choices, my only issue with what he said is the way he demeans professional golf as if he being a trust fund kid is somehow morally superior.

Scott was always ranked very highly as one of the best golfing CEOs. A few years I remember him being first on the list. I remember him being a +2 or something like that.

I'm of the opinion that the kid may be burned out. He has probably been playing golf since as early as he can remember and may not love it all that much. He may have done it to make his golf crazy dad happy. It started as a way to be close to his dad. Now, that he is staring at a place where he has to plunge himself into it full steam he may just not be interested.

The funny thing I see about this story is to be a successful businessman, I mean a really successful one, he is going to have to work just as hard. He can make a few deals and get hired somewhere because of his name, but at some point he will need to have his own ideas, and push them through with as much hard work as it takes to be successful in golf. The point being both avenues to reach the top will take hard work. He will be given advantages but he will need to capitalize on them.

What's "SV"?

To be clear, the quote you used was from the father  (co-founder of Sun Microsystems) not the golfer in question.  Here's a quote from the kid:

Quote

“My dad always tells me, ‘To whom much is given, much is expected,’” he said. “I’m given a huge amount of opportunities, and I feel like it’s my duty to do the most that I can with them. I’m still trying to figure out how.”

Personally, though, I don't care what the kid does.

Off hand I think, based on this limited article, is that the young man does not need to play pro golf to excell in it. He should go the business route in my opinion.

I just noticed that the hotdog comment was actually from Scott McNealy.  That's funny - you'd think he'd realize that there were ten times the guys selling ten times the hotdogs *because* everybody came out to watch Tiger Woods.

Or maybe his issue is that we're watching golf instead of "doing something"  .. in which case we'd all be selling hotdogs to each other.  I actually like that idea - like a hotdog swap meet.  Anyway . .it's better for business if people come and watch golf and buy hotdogs . .most of them, anyway.

I have not read Ayn Rand but she is what I thought of when I read that.  "Not only are entertainers not producing anything, they are distracting others from producing as well."

Except for that guy who got canned after he tweeted about heckling Poulter.  Maybe he can get a job selling hot dogs to the rest of us.

If spectators have their mouth full of hot dog, there is another bonus in that they aren't shouting out stupid stuff.  Thus making the event more entertaining for those with developed brains.....thus increasing viewership.....thus increasing revenue for advertisers......thus creating jobs for stuff.  And let's not forget Big Corporate Condiment Syndicates and their corrupt Mustard Unions.

Maybe McNealy was ousted by then.  (I don't know that he was technically "ousted"... it just seems that all founders are eventually driven out by bloodless coups.)

This is why when I do watch golf on tv, the volume is either low or muted.  I can't stand the "get in the hole" guy

@kpaulhus, you may need to step up and defend the Condiment and Mustard lobby!
