I think you used the machine wrong. How long will it take to get the green back to normal I wonder?

Look's like a nice course and that makes it funny at least to busters like me.

The City of Dayton hires anyone with a pulse to "take care of" my courses. Our par-3 has had multiple greens with strips cut out of them. Now the grass in the fairway is starting to die. It's a triage situation and the Falcon has been left to die.

Yes, that was my first thought, too.

Aerating. Yes, I've heard of that.

Come to think of it, I wonder when the last time my lot actually did it. Hasn't happened yet this year I don't believe.

:doh:Doh, thought he went too deep. Forgot those little nubs make it look like dirt's exposed. Nevermind.

Definitely not deep tine aeration.

There'e big/small hole aeration, spike-like aeration, and I heard of a course using a air type aeration where a needle blows pressurized air into the ground and make very tiny holes that you can't see within a couple days.  I would love to do that at my course, but I think it's quite a bit more expensive.  Either way, it is that time of year again!!

Coincidentally, NCR CC just tweeted a video of their aeration in progress today.

The CC I belonged to (before they closed) used deep tine aeration. It was so much nicer than what you see above from a player standpoint. Here is a pic of what it looks like underground. It seems like it is more effective and a lot less messy.

My course generally utilizes both regular aeration and deep tine aeration.  I believe we skipped regular aeration last year and only did the deep tine one, but usually we do both.  Regular aeration is typically larger diameter cores, and replaces the dirt in the "compacted layer" cores with sand to allow water to saturate into the green (and not just sit on the top).  You want the roots of the grass to have to grow downward to find water.  Otherwise they are unhealthy.  I've had the deep tine aeration described as more of a way to "shock" the ground and allow air and other nutrients deeper into the ground.  This shocking also tends to make the grass less comfortable and seek deeper locations for their roots.

Our greens are being punched this week. Once in the spring and once in the early fall. I'm praying the temps stay warm so they can heal quickly. Its a necessity of having a nice course.

Earlier this season I was playing and it turned out they were aerating during my round. Half the green was stimped at around 11, and the other half was aerated and impossible to putt on it. We adopted a "rule" - if you can putt, putt. but if you're on the junk, auto two putt. Essentially declaring the course unplayable for HC purposes.

We are playing a course Wednesday, that still "scalps" their faiways. They also let them dry out a little prior to reseeding. What this means for us is an extra 3-4 club roll out after the carry. This could also mean as much as 5-6 stroke savings for some of us.

I'm not sure when they aerate down here in FL. Anyone?

I believe they do it in July.

That actually reminds me, the course I played at last week is aerating on the 12th. Going to have to avoid that one for a bit.

Cool. I'm certainly not going to miss that about fall and spring golf in Ohio.
